Title: GPL / gamex86.dll code
Post by: ViciouZ on October 28, 2007, 11:23:21 AM
Is the whole package of the game GPL including media etc. or is it just the engine? I'd quite like to see how the gamemodes and paintball guns are done in the source.

its just engine and game content.  The actually game code is closed source due to hacking and what not.

Not true.

Not all game content is open source/gpl'd.

ie.. Homer's sounds, textures from original mappers, and a few others.

... And garrett, I'd like to see a hack that uses the game source. But still, is the game code GPL? Jitterspoez?

My bad on the hacking part.  I was how ever right about it being closed source.  Why is it closed source then?

I was explaining this to Garrett yesterday on XFire.  It's not so much people making hacks with the game code, it's that (almost) the entire cheat detection, global ban list and global login code resides in the game code.  The game code isn't released because it was built as a mod using the Quake 2 Mod SDK which was released before the engine was ever GPL'd.

Probably hacking, non-GPL'd code, and other sensitive material...

Edit: I typed and forgot to hit post... but I was right :D
