I'm pretty sure people would agree it would be beneficial for the demos to be recorded as .avi or .mp4,
something you can toy with in other video editing programs without losing quality during a conversion
any comments?
Edited subject to reflect request
-
That would require way too much processing power and memory. Something better would be an easy way to convert demos to a video file.
-
well theres dm2avi isnt there?
I guess you're right though, but yeah a program which would do it well for most resolutions without losing quality would be pretty cool.
-
I know that it is possible, think ViciouZ made a program/script to do it. But a built in feature would be nice.
-
A built in feature would be nice, but is entirely unnecessary imo. There are serveral free programs you could use to do this.
-
Demos are files that contain information about what happens in the server, so when you play a demo you are basicly creating a server and doing everything the file tells it to do.
What Viciouz app did was that it opened dp, called the dumpframes(?) command, and run the demo. The dumpframes command makes dp save an image of what its viewing every frame. So then Viciouz app would just gather the images and create an avi file.
I think making the built in feature would be nice, as long as it doesnt remove the old demo support.
-
What you're asking for is a video export feature. I edited the subject to reflect that. Demos just record all of the network data.

if we can already make AVIs, then why burden jits with another feature to implement?
-
demos aren't "movies" theyre more like streamed data
-
ViciouZ's program is really hacky, feature-limited, and is not particularly coded well, as I had to work with it when we were developing the dpdemo2avi web processor.
-
If a demo exporter was implemented, it would be even easier to post demos of cheaters and more quick for Jitspoe and other members to watch through the video.
-
I could get that working perfectlly, with a gui and all, if i could figure out some kind of sound-dump feature. If jitspoe could do a .wav or .ogg sound exporter without windows getting in the way, I could make a complete solution without too much trouble.
-
Yes Garrett, It would because you would have to go move it into your demo folder to watch it nor would you have to use the standalone to open it...
double clicking it into say iTunes or WMP would be a lot more convenient
-
But the video files would be massively larger and longer to upload, plus if it is of a potetial wallhacker, you can't watch it with wallhacks to check.
-
Well yeah but you wouldnt "have" to convert them to avis or mp4s or whatever.
If you wanted to make a video for whatever useless reason cough darkness cant jump cough that would probably work.
I wasn't implying an automatic dm2 to avi conversion

Yeah, but as sk89q pointed out, it'd still be pretty hacky.
-
If this feature goes through though, it won't be hacky.
-
If this feature goes through thou, it won't be hacky.
I meant viciouz app is.
-
How would it be that hacky? It would just start paintball with 2 parameters then encode the results into a video file.
-
Oh, well I suppose that wouldnt be hacky, but if the feature is implemented there really wouldnt be any reason to use your app.
Unless it does something like allowing you to double click demos and convert them I guess.
