It's a pain for admins to search logs when somebody is named "newbie" or "noname." This would randomly add a string of numbers to the end of their name to make them easier to identify. For example, "newbie" might become "newbie4284".

seems logical. unless it was newbie99... y00tz =P
or just do newbie.a newbie.b ..... newbie.zxc
-
How about a server set variable that could be added and incremented
-
I think random is the way to go. If you increment, it's going to start over each time you reset the server, and what if you run multiple servers? It would also mean there would be a lot of newbie1's, newbie2's etc. running around. If it's randomized, it's more likely to be unique.

QeHs.Player.1
G.Tagger.3
OTB.n00b.4
etc good idea knack. i like it

Awww it'll take away from the novelty of my newbie(99) :(
How about a variable for the base?
i.e.
set base "lol"
lol5675 has joined the game
lol3245 has joined the game
set base "GTPubber"
GTPubber2423 has joined the game
edit: wow I totally missed Flame's post.
-
so then this number would stick with the player until he/she decides or figures out how to change their name?

And in addition to that, there should be a hint when player without name joins server; ˝Your name is wowlookatmeanewplayer˝, you can change it by making a free DPlogin account on www.dplogin.com˝.
Like it was discussed in Lekkys post, but it should always appear when random noname player joins in.

Why OTB noob? :'( :'(
-
i didn't mean it to be derogatory. I just couldnt think of something to go with OTB. sorry t3rr0r
OT.best.4 =]
-
Better now :P
We need this as fast as possible.
It's difficult to find speedhackers, if there are 20 noname's on the server...
-
why not force them to actually put a name?? no name = no play.
I like the idea of random names though and perhaps ban the use of "noname" and "newbie." just a thought.

I suppose theres people out there that dont know how to change their name
-
-> Setup / Play -> Multiplayer Setup !
That's very easy.
If new people are to stupid to change names, why aren't they also to stupid to play the game?

How about a first run configuration that asks for a screen name?

that sounds like a good feature... the setup wizard...

it's not that easy. you'd have to think of a name that hasn't already been registered. unless of course you already have registered a name.

Because most of new players are really young kids.
And most of them don't even know this forum exists.
-
ok ok :)
But i like zorch's idea with a first run configuration.
-
Yes, but thats another game tweak :P
Thats the best solution, i think:

i.e.
set base "lol"
lol5675 has joined the game
lol3245 has joined the game
set base "GTPubber"
GTPubber2423 has joined the game

Don't forget that not everyone bothers to go check "Options" either. And lastly, I only knew that you could change your name in "Multiplayer Options" because I have played Quake many times before.
-
here's a fun idea - pull random player names from a "dictionary" of sorts on the server - a customizable list of names to assign to newbies and nonames.
-
But then they might conflict with names that are already registered, and thus cause the player to get booted (and wonder where their name came from). newbie* and noname* are reserved.
-
Doesn't y00tz have newbie(99) or so? :/
-
Special request?
-
Can't we just scrap the whole 'newbie' name all together and just make everyone have a custom name?
-
i don't see why not. doesn't the game already have something that shows up on first run only? if so, would it be possible to make it prompt the user for a name?
-
you could also have it so that the player's name is decided randomly when the game is first installed (so on the multiplayer setup it will say "newbie489") and then they will always have the same name.

I'll probably do that, too.
-
I'm putting in a vote for this. It's annoying having so many "newbie" and "noname" players in the cheat detection log. Curious why some people are voting against it.

They are the cheating nonames and newbies...
