I'm amazed at the amount of darkplaces bashing going on.  "Ack! New features that make the game look better! TURN THEM OFF! TURN THEM OFF!"

There's an important lesson to be learned in all of this, though.  If you make a game or mod, do everything right the first time around, then you won't have to deal with people complaining when you fix or change things.
