Title: Any good sites
Post by: Garrett on April 12, 2008, 10:19:26 PM
Is there any good sites to frequent that will have:

-Forums with an active community much like this one.  Not to heavily trafficked but with
-Tutorials about game development
-Links to other sites that has a game in development, like digitalpaint.org

Even another site like this one would be cool.

Hmm, well I frequent a dozen or so sites/boards, I can't think of all of them but you should check out stuff like polycount, quakedev, gamedev, gamasutra, valve forums/wikis, blendernation, I'll post more later.

Server change, during which the database was destroyed. Site maintainer then found out his backups hadn't been working since 2004.

Most of those sites will then lead to games in development, like this game for example, correct?

Tried http://www.gamedev.net/community/forums/ ?

Flipcode.com was pretty awesome when it was running.  I enjoyed just going there to look at the POTD's. http://flipcode.com/archives/iotd.shtml

http://nehe.gamedev.net has some really good tutorials if you're just getting started

Edit:  Wait a minute, I think I'm a little confused.  Are you looking for tutorials about how to make/develop your own game, or are you looking for sites for games that are already in development?  Or both?  Nehe's site is about basic OpenGL programming you'll need to know when designing your own.  (See Tutorial #10, as well.)

when I said gamedev, I meant *.gamedev.*, there is a lot of stuff there, especially if you're willing to look.

Good stuff here too: http://dir.gameradar.com/

Jitspoe, you are right, those pictures of the day are pretty interesting.

Herron, a little bit of both.  I talked to a good friend who is pretty good with a keyboard and mouse and he told me the game programming is a little different then other kinds of application programming.  The more tutorials and source code I look at, the better.

You must be talking about his hidden pr0n bookmark folder....

If only I didn't hide it so well that I couldn't find it... :(

Garrett, if I use the organize bookmarks thing in FF and select all, it's 1184 in the main folder, of course I went through that organizing phase, so I have a few folders.  I'm sure Jitspoe has 5 times what I have, just because he's been on the interwebz doing stuff longer.

Man, y00tz.  Thanks a bunch.  Thats a good week of site 'browzage' for me.  How many years did it take you to compile over 1000 bookmarks?

(Unless you want to learn 10 year-old terrible techniques..)

Thanks for the advice.  I am reading books and what not for now.  Once I get some more experience, I'll try my luck with the online tutorials and what not.

*Skitzo wonders if Y00tz has any good tutorials for Wings3D in his magical collection of bookmarks

When I searched my bookmarks, this came up: http://www.recipelink.com/mf/14/26918
Best darn wings sauce, period.

skitzo,  the basics of 3D modeling transcend software, in theory if you know what you're doing, it's just knowing what buttons to press.  Wings 3D is a great tool, but if you want to learn 3D modeling, I recommend picking up the basics of modeling there, then switching to Wings 3D when you want to master subdivision.

Regardless,

General stuff (how to model)

http://homepage.mac.com/ycarry/Wings/index.html
http://www.3dtotal.com/team/Tutorials/benmathis/benmathis_1.asp

W3D specific

http://www.wings3d.com/faq_how_to.php
http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Wings_3D:_User_Manual/The_Nature_of_Subdivision_Modeling/The_Nature_of_Edge_Loops
http://goanna.cs.rmit.edu.au/~aholkner/i3d/tutorial4.html

There's probably more, but these are just the ones I've tagged '3d' and 'wings'.
