The GLS login screen is confusing to new players, and the fact that there's a separate name field in Multiplayer also worsens the situation.
I would suggest some concepts, but it doesn't seem as though the menu syntax would support them =|
-
I just suggest scrapping the profile thing and having:
Username:
Password:
Remember username []
Remember Password []
Automatically login []
Easy.
-
If you don't have a profile, there's nothing to save the password to, plus you have to type the name every time. Perhaps just assign the player name when the profile is first created?
-
Maybe the username could be a drop down field of current profiles, and typing in a new one would create a profile when you click login.
Maybe that would eliminate the need for a 'remember username' fiels
-
How about this?
Player Name ______________
If you have a global login account for Paintball,
enter its username and password below.
Account Username: ______________
Account Password: ______________
[ ] Remember my password
You can register a blah blah blah at blah blah.
This would kind of kill profiles though. However, wouldn't an "advanced" user just be able to change the "name" var. to "switch profiles" via the console? They wouldn't/shouldn't need to change account username ever since I assume a database query could just link both usernames (if they differ) to their account.
However, this presumes that the game auto logs you in. What if it auto-logs you in if you are trying to use a registered name? Otherwise, you don't have to press login anywhere.
Although, I honestly hate having to show text (like help) on the menu screens. It's hard to distinguish it from field names and clickable links. It would be nice if visual groups could separate the two parts of the menu (the player name and the GLS account section) to make it less confusing.
On a slightly unrelated note, would it be possible to show error dialogs instead of quitting to the console? It would quit back to the main menu, but a error dialog (similar to the "logging in..." dialog) would show.

o.O Nice.

Perhaps just having the multiplayer name at the login screen and keeping everything else the same would be sufficient?
-
How about mixing mine and sk89q's ideas?
Player Name ______________
If you have a global login account for Paintball,
enter its username and password below.
Account Username: ______________ [v]
Account Password: ______________
[ ] Remember my password
[ ] Auto-login
You can register a blah blah blah at blah blah.
btw, [v] = drop down box.
Profiles would remain, but you wouldn't really notice them.

How about this. You enter your info for your GLS account, then the game retrieves the registered names off the site and displays them for you to chose as your screen name. Thoughts?
-
lol, erm. how many players are there registered? I'm guessing quite a lot. Thats a hell of a lot of info to retreive
<OT> Are player numbers assigned in order, or randomly? </OT>

I guess that works. It's better than having the name in Multiplayer options at the moment, anyway.

Might want to read what Zorch said more closely.
-
He means the names that account has registered :-)
Player numbers are assigned in order of connection, but don't all change when someone leaves. The lowest free number is filled when someone connects.

Problem with that is it doesn't allow for spacing, capitalization, punctuation, tags, or colors.

what's the smiley for an embarresed face?
Good Idea

Nono, I mean the Global Login numners (eg. Mine's 47522 I think).

It would be a bad idea to have the game 'lock' your name to the one you choose, but I think such a system would help guide a lot of newer players who aren't entirely sure how the GLS works. There could be a note somewhere reminding people that they can still adjust some things about their name from the console, or something.
And GID numbers are sequential. Random IDs wouldn't be practical at all.

What would you do about the amazingly large amount of players that don't have a GLA?
-
They never get past the login screen, so they would never set it. I suppose after they get kicked for not having a global login account enough times, they might investigate dplogin.com.

I'll go ahead and put it up for voting. Guess we'll work out the details when the time comes.
