The original map wasn't even finished yet.  Maybe mapping isn't your thing, along with the English language and typing.

Enough with the '...'s and modding of maps.  Modding maps is an art and you need mapping skills to mod a map.  If you want to make a map, don't mod because regardless of how 'good' the map is, no one will play it because its a mod and map mods stink.
Title: Re: New map: Dye2
Post by: Cameron on May 04, 2008, 11:00:46 PM
Garrett finally picked up on the ...... every single sentence.   Before you mod a map learn to map first.  Such as create a map from scratch and learn everything about BSP.  Once you know how to you might consider doing a mod but FOR FUN.  Maps that get modded are not exactly the best.  Alot of them are whipped up in a couple of days like this (and shazam33, etc) and have many texture misaligns and so on.  Only mod a map if it is yours and you make it better, not completely different or little different in the way it is structured.  I blabber on, yes but i do it to get it into your head.

UDEAD, next time please make a map that is original!

If you don't have any ideas just play in bsp or what ever map editing tool you use until you get an idea you like.

The kicker here is that if your maps stink, there is no chance of getting them on a public server to be played.

But your map currently only has 3 downloads so I don't see it on a server anytime soon.

- looks like another map, but not like dye or dye32
- u ask SumDumGoy, if u can modding his map?
- not the same bases on each side
- texture misaligns
- i need the lava texture
- renamed to dye2_b2 (i have a former version of this map from u, which i renamed to dye2_b1)

No, but what has "- not the same bases on each side" to do with a jumpmap?

That are only some things i noticed, when i have a look at the map.

What Garrett is getting at and what I am as well stop this map and start learning how to use BSP and create an Original map which is completely made by you.  It has nothing to do with anyone elses map.  Just yours.

i dont need to learn to use BSP, already know how to use it. im not creating my own map so u might as well stop. the only map i would be working on is the dye2 map, no other mod or my own maps so stop trying to get me to stop it wont work. your wasting the internet, power and most of all the key board....

You don't have the right to take someone else's map and "mod" it without their expressed permission.

Since you seem incapable of understanding the fact that No map maker in any game likes their hard work ripped by a wannabe, I'll just let you know NONE of your maps will ever be uploaded to GT servers and I'll venture a guess that the other server owners will feel the same way.

I guess you'll be enjoying them on your own machine...

Have a nice day.

Or have it to where when you click the post botton if auto spell checks it and if theres miss spelled words it would repropt you to fix them or ignore them.

Title: Re: New map: Dye2

i didn't make the dye2 map worse. i think it looks better than one open shard area. now each team has there own base and own house like area, and so that its not all the same i made the red diffrent than the blue in a way. so in my view i think it looks better than be for. I'm not riping the person off, when i get time i will put his name in the map because i forgot to do so be for. also the dye map was in the public domain, so there for i have full rights to do what ever i wont to it. but, by doing so i will not rip someone off.

Plus, having the decompiled map up on a server, which I totally disagree with, without getting the map authors permission, doesn't make it "fair game".

But that's ok.  You've already indicated that you're too lazy to worry about it and too lazy to care what others think of your work.

This has never really been clear to me:
The game code, is, of course, released under the GPL. With a few exceptions, since not all of it can be released for obvious reasons. But are maps copyrighted unless the mapper says they're under the GPL in the mapinfo file? Is is that way with textures and other media too?

By US copyright law, all works are automatically put into copyright of the owner. Unless the creator explicitly licenses his or her material or retracts all copyright and puts it into the public domain, you have no rights to it.**

From a moral POV, the person may have released the source, but conventional courtesy dictates that you ask the creator beforehand, unless s/he provided a license with the file.

**Note: I am not positive if other countries have the same provisions. US copyright law tends to be a bit more "ahead," both in a positive and negative way. "Fair use," for example, is relatively unique to the US, I have heard.

I remember someone uploaded a map that was based off dye (though nothing like the original) to the map DB a few months ago, but I deleted it off because it was so hideously bad. I think this is that map.
Title: Re: New map: Dye2

The rules on textures being GPL are more strictly enforced because textures get reused. A lot.
Title: Re: New map: Dye2
Post by: IronFist on May 06, 2008, 08:23:26 PM
You need to do three things:

1) Give credit to the original creator. Not doing this is completely ripping off that person's work. Don't be a buttmonkey.

2) Mark clearly that the original creator never gave you permission to modify their map. If someone takes your map and craps all over it, then releases it with your name on it, do you want others thinking you really let that happen?

3) Release your modified .map. What, are you afraid someone is going to take that and do the same thing you're doing? If what you're doing is fine, you should have no problem with this. That way, the original map maker can look over your modifications, marvel at your skills, and learn something.

i see what you are saying, but i will give creadit saying original creator.."bob" moded by..."udead. but when it all comes down to it we all could stell and mod or trash any map we have right now, because the maps are not copyrighted by law may its copyrights my your self but its not a real copyright. im not make anymore mod maps, but i will still work on dye2. do this for me, if you downloaded that dye2 map i posted in the form, delete it because the the next on will have his name in it, also if you know the guy...give me his email or like or something so i can messege him about this map.

Seriously, something made by a person is made Automatic Copyright UNLESS they say its free for anyone to use.  Again, If i gave you a link to my map "Evolution" that i never got around to finishing would you re-create it without my permission?  If you did I would ask why, did you ever ask me and obviously I would say NO BECAUSE YOU DIDN'T ASK AT FIRST.  This might happen here.  But I think this thread will be locked before it goes any further.

IANAL, but unfortunately my Virginian friend,

In 1989, the U.S. enacted the Berne Convention Implementation Act, amending the 1976 Copyright Act to conform to most of the provisions of the Berne Convention. As a result, the use of copyright notices has become optional to claim copyright, because the Berne Convention makes copyright automatic.

Exclusive rights held by the owner of a work, that nobody else may use:
- to import or export the work
- to create derivative works (works that adapt the original work)
- to perform or display the work publicly

lol. i know what a copyright is, and for you if your so smart your would know that wikipedia is not a good sorce for info because anyone can go in and change things or post things. this thing your talking about, im not prejudice the author's honor or reputation. Title 17, United States Code, as amended by this Act, does not provide copyright protection for any work that is in the public domain in the United States.

More important than any legal issue is simple respect for any map maker in any game.  Regardless of giving any "credit" to a map maker, you first respectfully gain their permission which you seem unable to understand.  The creator of the Dye maps is NOT "Bob"

Your lack of etiquette and your attitude are enough for me and I stand by my first statement.  You surely won't get a map on our servers.

http://www.copyright.gov/circs/circ40.html#copyright

Quote
Copyright Protection Is Automatic

Under the present copyright law, which became effective January 1, 1978, a work is automatically protected by copyright when it is created. A work is created when it is “fixed” in a copy or phonorecord for the first time. Neither registration in the Copyright Office nor publication is required for copyright protection under the present law.

17 U.S.C. § 102a

Not to mention the Berne Convention, which y00tz already did.

Addendum: Yes, you can sue actually. However, if you don't register with the US Copyright Office, you have to prove damages to win. Either way, it does not make it legal.

Nothing enters the public domain unless it is explicitly stated. Publish is NOT put into public domain, FYI.

@Cameron: If it were in the public domain, which it probably isn't, he would have full legal right to do anything with it.

So if it wasn't did he just decompile the map?

I could make a map (you all know what a great map creator I am) and post it, but that's all I've done; it's still implicitly copyrighted by me. Until I say something to the effect of "do whatever you want with this, I don't care", nobody else can really do much with it, since I've not actually put it in the public domain. It's the same reason you can't go take some random person's website logo and modify it a bit and use it as your own.

tl;dr I just repeated what sk89q said
Title: Re: New map: Dye2

Besides the fact he stole it, another reason this map should be trashed is that its just junk. From the three seconds i played i noticed its just 3 boxes put together. But not only is it just three boxes, its three boxes with bottle necks to get to one box to the other. And then, i could be wrong, there is only two small platforms to get across the middle. Easy to line that or doors all day. And whats the point of having a map full of random walls with holes in them. Those are ugly.

This mapfiles are there to look at and learn with them, not to destroy them. If you want to reproduce a map, you should ask the mapper before.

SumDumGoy is NOT me. Because I uploaded 90% of the maps on the map database does that make me the creator of all those maps, FYI. I only release under one alias, and that's sk89q.

I hope you never contact him. Or if you do, he finds a way to kill you, or at least remove your fingers. Nah, only fingers is not enough. Removing your head and feeding it to lions might be the only good use for your head. But then again, lions might pick up some of your stupidity :S. So they have to store your head to some nuclear waste deposit center. Yup, that is the only way. Yup.

Nothing is dumb enough to touch him...

What KnacK is saying: if this is continuation of Dye2, post it in the Dye2 thread.   However, I merged all three threads under the assumption that this is Dye2 with enhancements and a new name.  If this is incorrect, please feel free to send me a private message and I'll be glad to take care of it for you.

Happy Mapping,
