Title: Reasonable Map Ideas
Post by: Apocalypse on August 28, 2008, 10:00:05 AM
Hey I know I made a thread like this before but didn't feel like bumping it and most of the ideas weren't reasonable. Anyways does anyone have any reasonable map ideas that I could use as I can never think of good ones preferably not urban as then I'd have to make textures on mass even if I used the CTP textures.
Speaking of textures no I didn't foget Vic I have just been very very very very very very very very very busy!!!!!

When I was in Kansas City back in the mid 90's, I played paintball in a cave.  It had a hard surface to walk on but the rest was rock.

Thinking along those lines, doing a larger cave, with some huts and maybe a small creek/water seepage might be neat.

Here's a vid of the cave:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Px64cpFFkDQ

/me beats apocalypse with a 2 by 4

Maybe you could do a silo-ish siege map where the attacking team starts above ground and has to race down a silo and grab the flag, then take it to the launch room to cap.

Wow, that looks like a paintball2 level!  Didn't know there were real fields like that.  Is that a real cave, or is it synthetic?  That echo really makes me want to work on improved 3D sound.  Hm, is that not even on the feature vote yet?

As for ideas - how about a simulated "urban" map - like what you'd see on a real field with a bunch of buildings made out of plywood and 2x4's?

Why did you model it out in quake 1? Or was that a pre-existing map.

Jits,

Yes that is a real cave. I guess a better term would be cavern.  It sits along the missouri river and the caves themselves, the parts that arent used for paintball, are used for storage.
Apparently the area of KC is littered with these limestone caves.

Heh. I don't think that's a quake engine. HLDP, perhaps (which is quake-esque, but shut up)?

Look at the sky :-)

Yeah, saw that. But that looks way too nice to just be Quake. The textures are too high-res, those barrels are either bumpmapped or just have lots of detail, the lightmaps are way too nice, etc, etc.

I'm still going with HLDP. :3

DarkPlaces has high-res textures and various *mapping effects.

You can load skyboxes but it's still quake-style by default.

I had a couple of ideas but some would be too hard to explain right now.
One of my better ones was a siege map that would be a three-story bank.  With a firescape, roof opening, and windows.

Basically two teams one in the second level of the bank.  The other on the outside (not a big area outside) just a surrounding area.  Then the outside team could choose to either go up the ladders and enter through the roof or windows.  Or you can enter through the front door.   Then the team on the second story has to protect the flag from be captured from the vault. Then it just becomes who can steal or protect the flag from the 2nd story vault.  If you like the idea I can give you pictures for ideas.

Edit: Then it can be more like a staircase But is it a good idea?

The only issue with ladders is that you wil get some idiots on the ladders that stop and hold up everyone. Thus being sitting ducks.

I believe y00tz is already making a map like that whether it will be continued you can never really tell with y00tz's maps.

It is definitely a work in progress.

Here are the images basically the aerial views the three ways to get inside, and the back stair case.

The armed car is where one team starts and the second floor is where the other does.

I did not get into great detail I felt whoever made the map could.

Edit: I forgot to mention that bank is not mine and i recieved it from someone on Google Sketchup so if you use it you have to edit the title of the bank.  Because i took care of everything else.

Those are some old screenshots from when Quake1 first became open-sourced.  Calrathan and I were messing around with the idea of making a standalone game then.  The barrel lightmaps are a hack - they're actually a texture.

uhhh yea about that....the stuff wasnt made for DP.  Not even for Quake.   Its gogle sketchup.  I made the pictues put it in paint, and the one that looks hazy was a .gif file.

Edit:  Oh sorry Y00tz I did not know
