Title: Quake Live anyone? - Update!
Post by: Zorchenhimer on September 10, 2008, 12:09:28 AM
UPDATE

Tuesday, February 24, Quake Live becomes an open Beta!  If you have been in
the closed beta, you are urged to play a quick game as the accounts which
have not been played on for 28 days will be deleted.  However, all accounts will
loose their stats.

You will be able to play Quake Live Tuesday evening at: www.quakelive.com

Did anyone else here get in the beta?  This game is awesome so far.

Heh, I signed up about a month or two ago, and just got the email today.  But by the looks of it, they will be inviting more people soon.  They said that they add people in groups of 1,000.

Don't just tease us, tell us about it.  How's the framerate compared to regular Quake III?  And by 'browser-based' and 'the youtube of fps' - how does it function?  Is it a plugin?
Title: Re: Quake Live anyone?
Post by: Zorchenhimer on September 10, 2008, 02:00:08 AM
You install a plugin.  I'm surprised how well the game runs through a browser.  The frame rate is decent. I don't know the exact frame rate, but it ran without lagging at 1024x768 fullscreen (yes, you can run it full screen too).  To play, you have to go to their site, and everything is there.  The server browser, personal settings and stats (stored remotely, so you can access them any were).

Signing up to actually play (after receiving the email) was a bit exhaustive.  First you have to register on their beta site (one used for a bunch of betas?) then once again to actually play and create the account.

yeah zorch, i'm in the beta (since i went to QC). it is pretty awesome. (i need to play more!)

afaik, beta users are still bound by an NDA...

I still don't quite see the point of Quake3 in a browser.  Why not just play Quake3?
Title: Re: Quake Live anyone?
Post by: Eiii on September 23, 2008, 09:24:34 PM
Not everyone has Quake3. :< Plus, this'd make the online activity explode.

Seriously, does everyone but me who signed up have it?

all registered quakecon 08 attendees got a beta key.
but you probably weren't supposed to know that...
and zorch, i'm not sure if they want you posting screenshots..

Loading up quake 3 is faster than opening a web browser, going to a web site, logging in, waiting for content to download, etc, and you don't get stuck with all that extra overhead of the web browser running in the background, potential browser stability issues, memory leaks, and the like.
Title: Re: Quake Live anyone?
Post by: Eiii on September 25, 2008, 12:59:31 AM
For people who know what's going on, that's entirely true. But it's been stated quite a few times that QuakeLive is meant to appeal to causal gamers as well-- people who don't want to download a whole game (The whole thing would be rather large, right?), and who don't really care that much if their browser eats up some extra memory.

Also, the matching system will supposedly insure people get match with opponents that are at about their skill level, so that's a HUGE jump in appealing to the non-hardcore right there.

Also, I'm pretty sure any download times would be minimal. But again, I DON'T HAVE ACCESS TO IT SO I DON'T REALLY KNOW NOW DO I.

i went to bed early tonight and had a dream about quake live.
except i had more guns to choose from. ;D
it was like i was the character in the game, yet i was still using a keyboard and mouse to control myself. somehow.

i do remember having a really weird gun (dunno where the idea came from) that really wasn't much of a gun... basically there was this little purple wavy squiggle thing that showed up at the gun's muzzle when you held the trigger down, and if you held it near someone's face for a second then the person would "contract" that little purple wave ("contract" like contracting a disease) and it would show up in front of their mouth while asphyxiating them. so then they would pass out on the floor for a certain amount of time (which i wasn't sure of even in the dream). i used it as a silent way of ... shall we say... neutralizing my unsuspecting victims (mostly people that would have screamed and alerted my real enemies to my presence).

oh and i did have the rail gun ;D and i used it.

Quake Live is such a freaking joke. :(

It's a shame, too, because Quake 3 is a fantastic, fantastic game when you've got a decently balanced game going. Hell, even if it's 10-4 you can have a good time. But in Quake3 the skill difference between an experienced player and one who's been playing, even for a few months is massive. When you take that skill discrepancy and add it to team-based pub games (ala Clan Arena) one player can easily ruin an entire team. When you combine a game that needs each and every player on a team to contribute to it to succeed with a 'everyone can play! Join up!' mentality, you get bad things. The skill balancing system they have in place now doesn't work, period. I hope it gets fixed when more players get introduced into the system... but I'm not confident. The less noble players will do what they can to stay at the lower ranks and just terrorize people who aren't sure what they're doing.

Quake does not lend itself to accessible play. :/

Ya know back in the day I wouldn't even play on servers that had the lightning gun enabled.
I hate that gun.

That's my only gripe.

I love the feel of Q3. I miss RA3.

I get slaughtered now. Maybe if I play enough I can get the groove back.

One thing they have done very recently is completely rework the training mode thing (you are forced to go through it again).  You start out by proving your experience level on an 'obstacle course'.  Basically, "make it to the furthest portal you can."

I easily made it all the way to the end, but I still suck! D: It's a step in the right direction, though.

Pball has pretty clearly made me significantly worse at QL-- I can jump and move better than most people, but I jump and move to my death :X
It's a tough habit to break. Moving without jumping feels alien.

mmm, meddling training mode.  So unhappy.  Screw that.  I rarely played it anyway, i just got bored of it.  I just wish though, that it didn't need some excrement to be installed on the computer, so it would be playable at school and other places, otherwise to me its just like carrying it around on a USB key.

Their server overload is a bunch of bull.

They put all the stupid crap on the page like "YOU HAVE TO WAIT FOR HOURS TO PLAY - ISNT TECHNOLOGY GREAT."

Give me a break...get a better server you morons. Or at least split the download/play server up.

And after you get through the queue, it has to download even more files (maps, textures) etc. ::)

rofl, theres queues now?  Thats intercoursed up.  Goodbye Quake Live.  In my opinion, Quake 3 is just as good as it, but it has single player as well.

Ahhh the queue is getting shorter.
I just won like 4 or 5 rounds of FFA in a row.

MAN Q3 feels good!!!

...and there IS single player.

Someone doesn't understand the concept of a beta. Seriously, they've gone from a couple thousand players to probably well over a million in a day, and you're upset enough to drop the game because they're using some less-than-userfriendly load balancing techniques? QQ

I finally got through, and got Expert :) in that training mode thing.  Then got 15-14 to Smash, from 9-14 down.

after i fixed my settings i won the next 7 FFA matches in a row. (score to 30)

my record is 7-2 ffa, havent tried ctf yet.

btw you can filter what servers you want to see, at the top you click 'customize'.

you can filter the list of servers to only show servers which:

-have your friends in it
-have a certain game type (ctf, ffa, tdm, duel)
-are in a certain location (if you pick in your vicinity, then yes it will only show aussie)
-are on a specific map/arena
-are a specific difficulty

I need to re-install Quake Live. It was so empty and deserted when I got into the beta, but I guess things are different now <:

Oh yeah. Full servers everywhere. CTF is great, when the teams aren't stacked.
