I have two computers, one works for paintball and one doesn't.
EDIT: Updated. Please see the last page of this thread for my updates on this computer.
Used to be a lagging issue. Problem: Basically the lag is gone, and I can play fine until I kill someone, then it freezes. I do not believe its an overheating/hardware problem, from the tests that I have ran. Yet I do not think it is my graphics card because it's not lagging anymore.
-
get a better graphics card in the laggy one?
that would be my best bet do you know if it's internet or fps?
-
can u help me with that? im not really good at computers lol
-
On the good computer, go to the console and type
draw_fps 1
I believe its that, if I'm wrong someone tell me, cbf'd checking. Then do the same on the other computer and tell us what they are, on the same map, pointing at the same location. So say, looking mid bridge on shaz22 from high.
-
The best thing to do is not to download any upgrades for DP, or just buy a new computer. =]

NOT download upgrades?
Then he won't be able to play on a few of the servers....
-
yah but not like extra things.
-
If one computer is fast than the other, then it could be the processor speed at witch the computer runs at. Are both of the computer the same age or is one older than the other? If the one that is lagging older than the other one, then just update the computer. Also, it could be that the computer that is lagging does not have enough memory to keep up with the game.
-
i believe it is an older computer and ive tried updating it. as far as memory, there isnt enough memory on the lagging computer to make dp sooooo horrendous when i try to play.

that code is not working for me. if you figure out what the code is please post so i can do what cameron said xD thanks
-
cl_drawfps 1
-
Well if the code still dose not work and you don't mind spending some money, when you update your computer as in processor you want to update your motherboard to. The processor and motherboard must be compatable with each other.
-
thanks spook :P
NON LAGGING COMPUTER: 60 FPS
LAGGING COMPUTER: 16 FPS
on both computers we were on shazam 22 looking over bridge.
if you need a screenshot let me know
-
Screenshots would be lovely =]
On the lagging computer you could always try turning off reflective water and turn down the quality of the textures. Might get a few more fps out of your videocard.
I'm also going to guess that you are running an onboard graphics card to get that low of fps.
-
Ki3s, definitely turn off your reflective water, that should make a difference. I had to turn mine off for some reason I thing ever time I when by water is would lag, but I cant remember.
-
I will turn off the reflective water but i need to know how.
-
I'd say that 60 is pretty avarage.
My fps in most maps is over 9000 500.
-
Your fps is probably only 60 because you have vsync turned on. However, any frame rate increase over 60 will not be displayed by a CRT monitor, so there is not really much use in changing it.
-
ok gotcha. still need to know how to turn reflective water off. =D

r_reflectivewater 0
Or just 'r_ref<tab>' if you don't want to type all that.
-
All I can say now is to get a new computer if you don't want it to lag anymore.
-
ok i took off the reflective water and still no good. so i gotta eithe rupdate my computer or get a new one?
-
Yeah, there's little else that can be done if your hardware is that bad.
-
haha okayy. thanks for helping guys xD
-
Wait, is it always at 17 or does it vary?
-
you can get a new graphics card and replace it.
-
if you can find one, i have a GeForce MX 4000 Series (can't find a link for it at the moment) but that cos me around $40 and i get around 150-200 fps average. search around and see what you can find.
-
it varies. when no one is on the server its 16-17. if im in a server with 5+ people, it gets down to 3-6. lol
-
Wow, 3-6 fps, that's kind of epic. I'd suggest a new computer.
-

Lots of money is required there. Right click My Computer, then go to Properties. Under Computer, tell me what it says in there. Should be your processor and ram. But for the time being, get a better graphics card, it will help lots, only if you wish to be able to use 2 computers. Unless you really want a new computer. Btw, its not lagging, its just only showing 15 frames a second. If its over 50 or something, our eyes don't notice it at all.
-
Whats the difference, how'd you make it laggy and non?
-
Whats the difference, how'd you make it laggy and non?
Why don't you read before you post?
-
the lagging computer only lags on paintball though. with internet its actually pretty fast.
AMD Sempron(tm) Processor
3000+
1.80 GHz, 496 MB of RAM
Physical Address Extension
no idea what that means but i hope that helps cameron. xD
-
If you got more RAM you'd probably be good. My old rig had RAM that failed leaving only a half gig that worked, and I got 0 fps at one point.
-
so how do i get more RAM? xD
-
Buy it. Its probably called 'memory' in magazines n stuff.
-
gahh this stinks =/
-
RAM is fairly cheap nowadays (except ddr3, which you don't have.)
-
He has a good amount of RAM for DP at least. My laptop has 512MB and can play DP fine. It's probably more his processor which is considerably more expensive and more board specific to replace which will screw you in the end. A new video card would probably be your best bet to improve without spending too much money. A nice $40-70 Nvidia should do fine.
-
okay thanks guys
-
Question. I just found some updates for my computer. It says that there's about 6 updates for software, and 6 updates for hardware. (no clue what this means) and no priority updates needed. Will any of these software/hardware updates make it not lag? xD
Not sure if this helps but these are some of the updates:
Updates I installed:
Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0: x86 (KB928416)
Group Policy Preference Client Side Extensions for Windows XP (KB943729)
VIA Technologies, Inc. - Sound - Vinyl AC'97 Codec Combo Driver (WDM)
AMYUNI Technologies - Printing - Amyuni Document Converter 2.51
February 2007 CardSpace Update for Windows XP (KB925720)
VIA/S3G - Video - VIA/S3G UniChrome Pro IGP
Marvell - Networking - Wireless-N USB Network Adapter
Advanced Micro Devices - Other Hardware - AMD Processor
Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0 Service Pack 1 (KB929300) (x86)
Security Update for Microsoft XML Core Services 6.0 Service Pack 2 (KB954459)
Updates I haven't installed:
Update for .NET Framework 3.0: x86 (KB932471)
Windows Search 4.0 for Windows XP (KB940157)]
Root Certificates Update
-
none of that should affect your lagginess.
-
Okay. I'm gonna add more on that list of things and maybe one of them will. xD
-
Look,
If you turn down the detail levels and try using the stock textures (uncheck hr textures in setup) I bet that will fix your problem.
I routinely play DP on a p3-650 with 256m of ram and 16 meg vid card with no issues.
I jsut dont run hr textures or the highest detail levels.
-
Thanks Knack. I unchecked the hr textures in setup. Do I lessen the texture quality?
Edit:
Yay. Lag is gone! :P but another problem came up.. D:
After about 5 minutes, paintball freezes and I have to shut down the computer. Now it used to only do that with full screen mode and it would lag without full screen. Now that the lag is gone, it freezes, even when I'm not on full screen mode. =/
Anything I can do?
-
ya, update your computer. i don't know if downgrading a version of pb would help any wait and see what knack says.
-
What else are you running on your pc when you play paintball?
-
Nothing on the lagging computer. Since I can't use it for paintball. Whenever I go on to test I don't have anything else open. xD
-
do you have any type of messanger running in the background are anything like that, if so close it because even know its minimized and stuff it still takes up memory and that sounds like that you need more of.
-
Thats not gonna really solve the problem.
Go to the task manager (ctrl-alt-del) and go to processes (when running pball). Click on memory twice so it dorts low to high. Tell us the first 5 things on the list and the amount of memory they are using.
-
System Idle Process ---- 28 K
System -------- 52 K
smss.exe ------- 56 K
LSSrvc.exe ------- 72 K
WLService.exe ----- 76 K
-
Uhh, make it the other way round, so the bigger numbers are up the top, those ones are just really small and don't help :P (when your running pball again). Then repaste that, and also down the bottom of task manager, tell us your commit charge, while running pball as well.
-
A screen shot would be great. One with cpu usage largest to smallest and one with memory largest to smallest.
-
i thought so..pirate said low to high so i wasnt sure.
And I can't upload the screenshots for anything. I use paint to paste the screenshot but the forums isn't letting me pull it up. It says its too big even when I cropped it.
Ugh I spent over an hour trying to upload this. Not working =/
Here's the info:
paintball2.exe 29,244 K
svchost.exe 15,196 K
explorer.exe 12,056 K
APPSvC32.exe 5,936 K
taskmgr.exe 4,968
Computer Usage: 100%
Commit Charge: 535M/1154M
PF Usage: 535 MB
hope that helps :P
-
Yep it's the processor. Not much you can do about that without getting a new video card or a new processor.
-
Yep it's the processor. Not much you can do about that without getting a new video card or a new processor.
Q2 uses as many CPU cycles as it can by default. I am pretty sure DP does, also (cl_sleep can reduce this). 100% usage is not indicative of a poor CPU.
KI3S, hopefully DirectX is installed. Go to start>run>"cmd" and enter "dxdiag". You can then click the "save all information" button to save a .txt that you can upload. This will contain system specs, including video card specs.
I don't think it's possible to determine your problem in this thread if it involves freezing. The best generic advice is "reinstall windows", and if it keeping happening, you should suspect a hardware problem (overheating of the CPU is suspect).
To see if it's just hardware related, you can try 3D overclocking utilities like ATITool, which can be used to put the card through a stress test (ATITool just displays a furry rotating cube which gets my card really hot). If your system freezes, then your video chipset is probably overheating.
You can max out the CPU with something other than DP using prime95. If it crashes, you can be sure you have a processor heating problem.
-
Also if u know how to use a computer right u can close explore.exe and open stuff using codes and stuff like that.. now thats what i call lagg free
-

Whats the point of closing explorer, then having to re-start it do basically do everything once you leave the game? You only kill and re-start it when it crashes.
-
ya, closing explorer is like closing windows, you are limited of that you can do. and to restart it you have to let everything load back up IE anti virus...
-
I've tried cl_sleep. If I can get my 100% usage down less would it help? And I will do those things when I get home Iron.

This is not on paintball right?

And prime95?
Sorry for all the questions!

Straight to the point, not one of use is really giving you, KI3S good help. Sure we are giving suggestions, but we are not going into detailed to help you follow through with the advise. All i can say now is to deal with the lags or buy a new computer.
-
Google the programs.
www.google.com just in case you're too lazy to actually type it out yourself.

1) If I can get my 100% usage down less would it help?
2)This is not on paintball right?
3)How can I do that?
4)Where can I find ATITool?
5)And prime95?
Sorry for all the questions!
1) Yes
2) no, click on the start button, then go to 'run' (if it's there *sighs at windows vista)
3) Not really sure, but get the origional windows disc and boot off that (google booting off a CD for more details)

Exactly what I was thinking, but you're the worst of all. You've repetitively told him just to go buy a new PC or piece of hardware when he doesn't necessarily need to do that. This thread is way too long and chalked full of useless repetitive post's. It's sad from that point.
Knacks said it best when he's told you he's running DP2 on a computer with less than half the specs of yours. It's all in the setup.
1. Lower the resolution
2. Lower the amount of colors (bits)
3. Lower the texture quality
4. Turn off the graphical features: reflective water, shadows, caustics, anisotropic filtering, etc. (those are all in the standard video options menus within DP2)
5. There are a few Q2/DP2 specific commands that might have a great impact on your situation;
a.) cl_locknetfps 0, when on it limits the fps (frames per second, low fps = "lag") to how "fast" your network is.
- type in "cl_maxfps 0" while your at it, this will allow fps to climb to whatever number you can reach.
b.) cl_sleep 1, i cant remember who said it but in this thread someone mentioned DP2 being processor intensive, this will lessen the load on your processor and should give you more fps.
Do these things and if they don't significantly improve your fps/"lag" we'll help you find more solutions.
sk89q has a great website for DP2 information, and one page dedicated to players like you;
http://digitalpaint.therisenrealm.com/reference/reducinglag
http://digitalpaint.therisenrealm.com/reference/commands
Both before and after you enter these commands you should use other commands to show you any difference, as well as monitor current situations. These are;
cl_drawfps 1 - which it seems you have already done.
cl_drawpps 1 - puts a number underneath the fps telling you how many packets per second are flowing.
netgraph 1 - great tool that shows a graph at the bottom that shows you how your network is running. Spikes/large jump = bad. If you've got fps issues but a nice straight line on netgraph then we know its not network related.
As for the prime95 thing....don't go that route. I realize overclocking is tempting when something isn't working right and you think you can get free speed from your existing computer. You will almost certainly destroy your hardware. If you cant make an outdated FPS run well on a more than adequate computer lets keep a bit more perspective. If and when you decide to upgrade your hardware I will be more than happy to assist you in the destruction of the old components.
Good Luck and feel free to contact me.
-
I already lowered the resolution, texture quality; I've already turned reflective water off, Iv'e done cl_sleep. It doesn't lag anymore but I will do those other things. Now my problem is my computer freezes after 5 minutes of playing even without fullscreen. And then I have to restart the computer.
-
Everything freezes or just DP? Try typing "ctrl+alt+del". Something might be overheating, open up the computer (take a side panel off) and check how much dust is in there. If it's excessive, especially on heatsinks, blow it off with canned air or your mouth and use a vacuum to suck it up.
Might want to try changing your video drivers (either updating or rolling back, if you have the most current).
Most importantly, try undoing anything you can remember doing just before this started to happen.
-
never use a vacum on a computer, use the can air.
-
Yes mewa DP freezes and the screen looks all messed up and theres no way to ctr+alt+del to get out of it.
-
Then its probably not dp freezing, but something else as a consequence of the program. Try cleaning dust. I have similar issues when my graphic cards heatsink gets slightly clogged.
You dont use the vacuums brushes on the components themselve. Just get the dust into the air and the nozzle of the vacuum will grab them.
-
Sorry to bring back a dead thread. Well I've had some time to work on this computer. I recently did:
all of these should improve your framerate:
seta gl_finish "0"
seta gl_anisotropy "1"
seta r_caustics "0"
seta r_reflectivewater "0"
seta gl_dynamic "0"
seta gl_stainmaps "0"
seta s_mixahead "0.2"
seta gl_highres_textures "0"
seta gl_picmip "1" (0 is regular quality, 2 is most degraded quality)
seta gl_skymip "1" (0 is regular quality, 3 is most degraded quality)
seta gender "spacepirate"
you should also go into your video card setup and disable "Vertical Sync" in your GL Options
playing in a lower resolution will also greatly increase your framerate.
these should help your network connection (a lot of them are defaults)
seta cl_minfps "0"
seta cl_maxfps "0"
seta cl_locknetfps "0"
seta cl_cmdrate "60"
seta rate "10000"
In addition to all these I have turned off reflective water, lowered my resolution on my computer* and Paintball, I have lowered the amount of colors, and lowered the texture quality.
And I was pretty amazed that I could run Paintball lagg free. I had more fps then my cmputer that runs paintball, which I take as a good thing. My problem: I was able to shoot my gun, but the minute I shot someone, it froze. Lol. I just want to see if there something else that can be done instead of buying a new graphics card, since it doesn't lag anymore.
When it freezes the screen goes all messed up, it doesn't just pause and freeze, if that helps. I am about to run ATITool, DirectX, and Prime95 to see if that can show me my problem. Any help is greatly appreciated.
EDIT: I ran DirectX and there was no problems found in anything. I ran ATITool and my system didn't freeze, so its not overheating. I was unable to run Prime95. Not sure why I can't but from the two other tests I do not think it is a hardware/overheating problem.
-
Prime95 just tests the CPU, so that won't tell you if the graphics card is overheating. I'm not sure why shooting somebody would cause a freeze. Perhaps it was just coincidence? Does it always happen when you shoot somebody? Does it happen every time you shoot somebody?
-
Yes it always happens when I shoot somebody. If I'm lucky it'll freeze on the second kill.
-
Does it happen when somebody else shoots somebody? Maybe it's an issue with a specific death sound? There's not really a difference between you killing somebody and somebody else killing somebody. It plays a sound, death animation, and displays a message. I suppose there's the center print, but I doubt that would make a difference.
-
Hmm. Well i can usually get about 1-5 kills before it freezes. And I can test maps out perfectly on this computer, lag free, and without it freezing. As for your question on when someone else shoots, I don't think so. Sat in a couple pub maps observer, not moving and also following people. Listened to pretty much most of the sounds. No freezing so I'm gonna say it's only when I'm killing someone.
-
What about demos? Can you watch demos without it freezing?
-
Yessir
-
Could you try playing logged out, please? It might be yet another bug I unwilling introduced while doing the stats system.
-
Played logged out. Killed one person and got killed by someone and it froze. The map was airtime3 and it seemed fine except for the mid little hump was really laggy for me.
-
You might try enabling vsync (gl_swapinterval 1) so the graphics card isn't wasting cycles rendering things that never get displayed. You could also try cl_sleep 1 if it's your CPU overheating.
-
Have you tried a fresh install on this PC? (uninstall and delete c:\games\paintball2 before installing again)
-
gl_swapinterval 1 didn't seem to help.
Blah if I did a fresh install I'd have to type in all those commands to get the lag off. Lol let me try posting some demo's of this computer in a pub and on a match server playing to show where it laggs on some maps and when it freezes. Before I do a fresh install :)
EDIT: Did a netgraph and heres the one thing I saw but pretty much everything else was fine.

-
Heres the test demo's and some description about them.
Pub_test1: Well demo ends when I die. You should obviously be able to notice the lag on certain parts of the map.
Server_test1: Notice how it lags alot then when he comes in it seems to kind of go away. Also at the end of the demo it shuts off but I killed him then it froze (doesnt show me kill him)
Server_test2&3: Notice how it lags at certain spots. Especially the cat part from fd to flag, then the rest of the cat seems not to lag.
Sorry for all the parts of me going idle but please watch the demo's until it stops. :)
