It generally takes me 2-3 hours to fall asleep each night. I think it's mostly due to a hyperactive mind. Any suggestions?
-
I've got a similar thing going on-- if you're not already, read for an hour or so in bed. It keeps your mind from jumping around too much. Might I suggest "The Moon and Sixpence"? It's past copyright, so it's free, too.
I dunno, do a couple really intense math problems before bed. Whatever'll get your mind in line for a bit, but reading is probably easier/better than that. Get a dog or something and cuddle it! They're adorable and sleep-inducing.
-
I have the same, although not as bad as it used to be. Couple things help me anyway:
Use your room only as a place to sleep/sex. Doing other things like playing games, watching tv etc makes it harder to think of it as a place to switch off, and you associate your bedroom with activity rather than sleep.
Don't eat just before going to sleep (although I find a glass of cola helps :/)
If you're thinking about anything in particular while trying to get to sleep, close your eyes and image a big roller bin in your mind. Put whatever you're thinking about inside and close the lid, then roll the bin out of your mind (amazing).
Light reading is good too.
-
that sometimes happens too me, what I do is just watch tv for a bit until i start to get tired.
-
switching off is the key term.
Once I am in bed, I practice breathing exercises for a few minutes: slow long deliberate breaths. This last for only a few minutes. Then I envision a light switch on a wall and I mentally turn it off.
After that, my wife says I twitch once or twice and I'm out cold.
THis method worked from my father and I have been doing it for years.
-
I've tried reading, but that just means it takes an extra hour (or whatever time I spent reading) before I fall asleep, and sometimes it makes it worse, because I'll be thinking about all of the stuff in the book. Perhaps I'll try the light switch thing tonight. Thanks for the suggestions.

back on topic,
Try this out, http://www.placebo.serv.co.za/?page_id=7
They are mp3's that play white noise for a specific amount of time. I used them once and it worked like a charm.
-
dont pay attention to the time convince yourself that it is early at night i do that sometimes too
-
sometimes I listen to some soft music while in bed. After about 5 minutes I feel quite drowsy and relaxed so I turn the mp3 off or just take the ear phones out and go to sleep.
Make sure you're cozy as well. If I go to bed in a somewhat unmade bed, I find it harder to get to sleep.

Inhaling smoke of any kind is obviously not fantastic for you, but yeah, cigarettes are many many times worse than marijuana cancer-wise.
-
Close your eyes and imagine being weightless in an infinite white space. Helps me greatly.

This probably won't work for you, but around 3-4 bottles of an energy drink (specifically Bawls), and I'm dead tired.

I had this problem a long time ago.
Here's how I not only conquered it, but discovered I could control my dreams as well.
It's all about focus and concentration. Pick a subject. Doesn't matter what it is. A lot of times I will write a story in my mind instead of thinking in the real. Just think about your subject and refuse to let your mind wander. Keep your focus and concentration narrow. Your dreams, if you have any, will surely be based off of whatever you concentrate on so choose wisely.
I have long decided that I could control my mind. It's really a practice that goes way back to the days of pretending not to care about girls and acting like a cold-hearted SOB. If I don't like what my mind is thinking and focused on I have developed the ability to force it elsewhere. It takes me about five seconds to completely detour my mind off any subject now. It used to take longer back in the day.
If you consider yourself of average or above intelligence then you've probably already wrestled with you being smart enough to have power over you. You can do it. You just have to know you can.

I have a friend who had this problem, he went to go seek some help and got the idea of waking up earlier and exercising. It makes him tired earlier and when 9-10 comes around hes tired enough to fall right asleep.
-
I've had this problem for about 4-5 years now. Up until a few weeks ago, I wasn't able to fall asleep anytime before 2am. As a result, I would always wake up during the middle of the day.
I wake up around 6:30, shower, eat, and get ready. Then I go to school, come home around 12 and have the rest of the day to do what I have to do. I try not to nap during this time or it will only hurt me when I'm trying to fall asleep. By about 10 I'm pretty much dead tired and fall asleep rather quickly.
Leaving the tv/radio on at night helps me fall asleep. I don't know why the noise soothes me.
During the year or so that my girlfriend was living with me it was a tad bit harder to sleep. She couldn't sleep with light or noise. So I had to make due and force myself to sleep with other means.
I just try to do alot during the day, so by the time I want to go to bed, I'm able to fall asleep quickly. Oh, and, a wandering mind, is a restless one.

Here's how I not only conquered it, but discovered I could control my dreams as well.
Ive been able to control my dreams for years, its as if my conscious is still working, and im able to think to myself like, ive caught myself couple times "funny as it sounds" freestyling rap in my dreams, couple of my friends would be over, and id be thinking inside my head, and freestylin about excrement around me in that particular moment, its kinda cool considering im sleeping but yet still awake, i cant actually control my dreams, in the sense that i can make excrement appear, or have godly powers, its just as if i was awake, i could run away, i could fight, have sex, or whatever...
but to help me goto sleep, i play my usual games every night, Quake2 Jumps (the real game. not pb) Quake2 Gloom ,Digital Paintball 2 and recently Mirrors Edge.
another game u should check out is Bionic Commando Re-armed, pretty slick.
I also check the forums here, reading and lookin at the photography area is nice to do, i check out rlslog.net every waking moment
getting high b4 u goto bed is easy, and youll fall right into lala land
if u got the next day or or your just part of my family and and get drunk then goto sleep, that's another way to achieve this task.
sometimes i cant goto sleep until i have sex, just gotta get that extra "load" off your back ;)
after all that who wouldn't sleep ;) ;) ;)
p.s. i goto bed around 2am est time every night

I've only had one lucid dream and it remember it distinctly; it was nuts.

When ever i can't sleep i find that masterbation will make you tired and focused Just make sure you don't "clean up" on your sheets; you don't want to be half unconscious and roll over into a freezing puddle of goo!
Normally i can contrl all of my dreams. Especially when it's in the morning. I usually don't need an alarm clock because i will be dreaming and i will just think to myself, "hey i wonder what time it is". Then I'll wake up and if i still got time to sleep i'll just tell myself to only sleep for a half hour or so and that nearly always works.
The only problem i find with being aware while you're dreaming is that sometmes yu think you have control, but every now and then you don't. So i tell my elf to wake up, and i do, or atleast i think i do, but i'm still dreaming. So i'm dreaming i woke up, and i start moving around my house and then something intercoursed up happens, and i get scared, then i realize i'm still dreaming and i try to wake my self up, but the it just starts all over again. One time last summer i dreamt i woke up so many times i started getting scared i would never wake up, and i started sweating and hyperventalating, and then the phone rang and i woke up and was out of breathe. It was 4:30 in the afternoon, and it was the most terrifying night mare ever. I must've been trying to wake myself up for hours, at least it felt like it.

It's okay, it's just your body adjusting to becoming a young man. It goes away when you get older, buddy.
