I had the idea. It was something like a maprating-page for paintball maps. I played with a little php and I created a little page, only the beginn of this page....
But the skeletal structure is done.
The features:
-Register
-Upload and describe your maps
-Your maps get rated by other users and by an official maprating-group
-You can see the best maps... and so on
Have a look at the page i've done yet
http://www.maprating.ch.vu (http://www.maprating.ch.vu)
What do you think about this page/idea, should i continue?
p.s. would be very helpful if someone can provide me some webspace (mapupload, screenshot..)
-
I Think this is a pretty good idea, perhaps you can put all the mapping tips on a tutorial page. I think you need to do two separate pages, one for beta maps which wont be stored for long, and one for final compiles to stop people uploading multiple versions.
-
i like it too, theres a few times i dont go on servers as i dont have the maps, and i would probably check that to see what they are like before (or whilst) i download new maps
-
you need it in english. , Perhaps a German and a english?
if you do english i would be glad to help you set it up!
-
sweet dude!
-
I was thinking it might be good to have something like this on the wiki, but then it might be better to keep the wiki more objective.
-
@smokey: I think I'm able to do it in english, it will not be the best, so i can give it to u to make it a little more... readable. we will see
The Idea with the tutorial is good, i have one little in german, and I can chose a selection from the english tutrials and this will work great
I think you need to do two separate pages, one for beta maps which wont be stored for long, and one for final compiles to stop people uploading multiple versions.
I think thats little circular, you can upload your beta map, and if its done replace it with the final one. I think that should work.
So i will continue, and if something has changed, i will inform you of this.
Edit: rating system done.
-
when do you think this will be functional?
-
i think it will take something like 1 month, i will go on holidays and the school is hard, but im working on it and i will start it official if i have done the mandatory things.
-the rating system is nearly done...
-
the test stage of www.maprating.ch.vu (http://www.maprating.ch.vu) began!
Have a look on the page, register an account, try to upload a map, try to give a vote.
Its only a checking, that i can see if everything is working and that i can notice bugs and weak points.
Give me a feedback with pros and cons that i can improve some things.
-all maps and users will be deleted after some weeks, to do after this the official start. Thank you for your understanding.
-
Cool. Gave it a shot. It seems to work pretty well.
Some tips for screenshots:
cl_drawhud 0
gl_mode 3
That will keep the screenshots small and clean.
Edit: The map shows up under "Latest maps" and "Best maps" but not "All maps." Also, there should be ways to have some text comments in there, too -- not just numeric ratings. Like Pros, cons, and comments.
-
Why bother, isn't it obvious the best maps are? cosmic3, armegeddon, jump, and airtime.
-
In "All Maps" the maps are arrange alphabetically, first A, B, C... lol and your map begins with 2, thats the problem, i fixed it, perhaps i will find a better solution.
I think that with the comments is very important and i will also do this. I think that everyone can write a comment, and this will appear under the map. Something like this?
And with the rating, i dont know how it is in the usa, but in switzerland :D we think that 10 is the best and 1 the worst, i suppose you think the reverse. I will write some things like 1-worse, 10-great or something like this to make it clear.
-
Generally with ratings it's 1 is the worst, 10 is the best. Placements are where 1 is better (ie: 1st place, 2nd place, etc.) I think that's fairly universal, but it won't hurt to clarify.
Another thing that might be good to have is different rating categories to help keep it more objective. Things like:
- Gameplay
- Lighting
- Item placement
- Texturing
- Construction
So junk like xbmap would get a 1 for lighting, and maps that have 500 autocockers in the base would get a 1 for item placement. Maps with misaligned/boring textures would get low scores for texturing. Maps with overlapping/misaligned brushes and box maps would get low scores for construction, etc. You know - just to make people think a little more. Probably won't work, but it's just a thought.
-
yeh you'r right, I also thought on something like this, but only the 'official maprating-group' I mentioned, can do this specific rating.
I will clarify what I can do, and we will see
-
so, the comments are done, everyone can write a comment to every map (you have to be logged in).
the next work will be the specific rating, i think thats a lot of work...
-
Well, it's probably not necessary. That was just an idea.
I tried to submit a comment and got:
Parse error: parse error, unexpected '=' in /usr/export/www/vhosts/funnetwork/hosting/maprating/sessionhelpers.inc.php on line 172
-
lol try it again, was updating the page :)
-
what about allowing multiple screenshots for each map? this way you could allow other users other than the original uploader to add screenies to maps.
-
Also, for the thumbnails, you should actually create a new, smaller version of the image instead of just resizing the big one in HTML. You'll save bandwidth/reduce load time that way.
-
yeh i think that becomes more important if there are a lot of maps. perhaps.
and you have written this comment, am i right? but how u did that ur name is missing?
and you think that everyone shold be able to upload maps from other players?
thats pretty cool i think, cause on this way only the mapper can upload his maps and this can take a lot of time. but i have to reorder a lot of things if i have to change it...
-
I tried to reply, but got that error, then I went back later and replied again, but it had apparently logged me out.
-
lol sounds funny, because its unpossible to write a comment if you aren't log in. but you could do that... :)
now i have put some other maps up, have a look: www.maprating.ch.vu
-
It's impossible to bring up the comment window without being logged in, but if you're logged in, start to write a comment, then your login times out, you can still submit it and be anonymous.
-
also I have voted on some maps a couple of days ago. then i came back today and was allowed to vote on those maps again.
-
Your ip probably changed.
-
yeah thats why voting should only be allowed to registered players... :)
-
oh yeh if the time goes by and you are still writing a comment it allows it... hmm have to fix that.
the vote gets written in your session, and if you empty your cookies you can vote again... I can do that only logged in ppl can vote, but I think its also helpful to have more votes and a better average.
-
yeah thats why voting should only be allowed to registered players... :)
i was logged in both times. so i am guessing that voting doesn't have anything to do with your username?, but rather your ip or cookies or whatever?
-
currently, yes...cookies... sadly ;)
-
So far so good, the maprating.ch.vu wasn't really a great thing, I think that's because noone wants to load up his old map, its a lot of work, I know. So i decided to do it a little different. Only new maps can be uploaded, so everyone who has created a new map, can present it there, comments can be written and screens can be uploaded. The Rating with the different categories will also be done.
It's a lot of work, but i'm doing it willingly and i am proud if someone is using it and appreciates my work. So I get back to the grindstone to give my best.
-suggestion and criticism is very welcome!
-
I think it just kind of got forgotten.
-
if you're going to allow map uploads, why not still let people uplaod old maps as well?
-
Dang. It's kind of disheartening to do all this work on my webserver to have a map rating\comments system only to find there was another site that had the same sort of thing. Hmmph.
-
Lmao he beat you to it.
-
Although i didn't really continue the page, I've done a little new style. have a look!
http://www.maprating.ch.vu/ (http://www.maprating.ch.vu/)
-
I just stumbled opon this topic... great idea! you have my activity.
could use a new color scheme, something a little less drab, but its your choice i guese.
-

that was long time ago. now, i've really done a new page. like on the last page, its only the test-stage, but everyone can try to submit a map, and can give me a feedback of everything.
i think i have about 70% done

-
I will try it later, but...
The initial pop-up....meh. Is that a requirement from the host?
-
The initial pop-up....meh. Is that a requirement from the host?
Yeah it is.
-
I'm not sure I understand the rating categories -- perhaps you could have something like "Construction" (or brush work), "Lighting", and "Game Play". Possibly "Layout", too, but I think that would tend to fall under game play.
"Graphic", "Level design", and "Structure" are kind of difficult to distinguish.
-
Do you need some hosting to get rid of the pop-up? I have a spare 500meg of hosting with php and mysql if it helps.
-
I edited the rating categories a little bit, i think its clearer now, than before
http://maprating.ma.funpic.de/maprating/index.php?page=rating_criteria
-
My rating, the site looks a little plain but the system to do the stuff in the site seems to work well. Thought id let ya know. lol
-
Just noticed a small bug:
Warning: Cannot modify header information - headers already sent by (output started at /usr/export/www/vhosts/funnetwork/hosting/maprating/maprating/mr_show_map.php:160) in /usr/export/www/vhosts/funnetwork/hosting/maprating/maprating/sessionhelpers.inc.php on line 53

Just noticed a small bug
thanks, i think i fixed it.
I know that the style isn't my thing, if someone want do improve me stylesheet, no problem ::)
If you find some other bugs, or if you have some requests/questions, please write what you think.
-
Ummm.... is there anyway to make it not german because I was looking at Dome and its rating but the comments were all in german.
I like the idea I will probably register.
-
I think it is just a test-site yet. If i understood pimp right, he will delete all datas from database, before the "real" site will go on with many maps.
But it is right, it would be nice if all people can understand the comments, so english is the best language. Maybe pimp could do a NOT AUTOMATIC translate function, because they translate just rubbish:P
-
I made a quick mockup for a fresher style, nothing fancy, just a little smoother.
Post here if you want me to upload the files.
-
Not a huge fan of the blue + yellow, to be honest. I think it would be better off with one main color.
-
Hmm :/
I was just trying to give it clearer, less yellow look.
I could go through it again and use one color with different hues, thoughts?
-
I think this one is good y00tz. I like the way the blue and yellow fit maybe change the tone of the blue though.
-
an all yellow website is a bad idea!
-
I like your style-try even more that mine, and im very glad if you could do something resembling, that i can take as style.
The main language is english, the comments the peoble post, will hopefully also be english. if there's something in german, it will be nonrelevant for you.
the page is still in work, and it will still take a long time, till i finished it, so keep smiling =)
-
Hm, http://www.maprating.ch.vu/ doesn't seem to load in Opera. I'm just getting a blank page.
-
Hey, another Opera user :P
-
Opera is one of the few browser to pass the Acid2 Test, why not use it?
Pimp:
Here's the files, I can make whatever you'd like if you don't like this design.
Btw - I love your maps, keep up the good work.
y00tz is absent minded .. see the post below

Did you forget something? :P
-
Thanks Lekky :P
-
thanks yootz, i added a function, that you can change the style on the profile page. style1 is mine, style2 ist yours.
i think the white fields are a little to white. you can edit your style again and give it to me, so i can change it there. i changed the stylesheet a little, so you have to realign.
but i like the your style, its friendlier that mine.
-
Okay, I thought they were a little white too, and somewhat harsh against the yellow + blue. What do suggest I make them, a pastel(light) yellow or blue?
I noticed lots of spam on the site, with both comments and screenshots.. If you need another moderator who is online a lot, I'd gladly help you out.
by the way:
Jitspoe: I didn't ignore your comment completely, I knew you liked one color sites by looking at this one, I don't have the talent nor the keen eye to pull off 1 color sites, they always look bland and clash.
-
What else can i do?
I think i'm pretty finished with the maprating page. Everyone who has something that doesn't work, can sand a message to me and I will have a look on it. I hope that every mapper tries to upload some of his maps

Maybe delete all (test)comments and (test)votes? I like the page ;)

oh, i think i missed few things since my last visit =)
