Title: New Water Bug
Post by: AgentSmith on February 27, 2006, 01:44:25 PM
Hi,

I just downloaded Build 16, and the reflection water has some bugs for me:

1st is:

I cant difference a "puddle of paint" drom normal water (examples: dopjump, bombsaway)
so I jump into something looking like water but its paint :-(

2nd is:

The Water makes the game really really laggy, and It seriously CANT be a problem with my comp.

System:

4,2 Ghz Intel Pent. D  CPU
4GB DDR2 Ram
X850 graph. card (I dont know exact name, Bought it 2 weeks ago for around 400$)

but It lags for friends too, I dont know how to get that fixed, but that really sucks, the reflections look great, but "puddles of paint" Shouldt have reflections and It shouldnt lag so much!!

anyways, thx for reading and answering!!

This is the way bombsaway looks for me:

It's reflective, but still clearly purple.

Is it laggy for all maps with water or just certain maps?  Some maps have those stupid looking waterfalls and multiple layers of water, which cause the scene to have to be rendered multiple times, and it's really slow.

In any case, there's a checkbox to disable reflective water if it causes too many problems.

That actually has nothing to do with the water.

I have the same problem as Agent, but when I set r_reflectivewater to 0, the lagg disappears.
If reflectivewater is set to 1, my fps drop from 150-200 to like 20-30  :-\ .

Lag stops if I uncheck that with water reflections, I think this r_reflectivewater 0 is the same thing like unchecking reflective water in the setup..

But on my local server (Play - Start Game) It lags aswell...

I think alot of ppl have this problem cause I heard some talking about "laggy water" on public servers.....

*help* the reflections look so great I wanna have them :-(

Sorry for the double post,

but now I completely removed and re-installed paintball, and still it lags, I tired now nearly everything...

I dont think its cause my system isn`t good enough cause I cant imagine that every1 here hase a better one:-(

BIt, has the lag disappeared for you until now?

I'm pretty sure Jit said you need a really good computer.

What framerate are you getting, and on what maps? (cl_drawfps 1).  Reflective water worked fine on my 9700pro, so I'd imagine it would work even better on an X850.  Have you updated the drivers?

On water, it comes down to 20FPS, on Arenaball, but I think  the other maps won`t be better... (Normally, I have 60 FPS cause I limited maxfps ...)

I updated every driver...
but the water should have worked on my old card too, it was a FX5200 ...

thats really really odd, cause other ppl with a card like a FX5500 can play without any lags..

Umm, Do you need a 256MB or higher card for the water, or is 128 enough?

Edit: I justtried it on a 2nd Comp. with a GeForce 6800 Ultra which is a really great card, and it lagged aswell.....

Video memory isn't going to matter much for the water.  It's things like highres textures where it comes into play.  What resolution are you playing at?
Title: Re: New Water Bug
Post by: AgentSmith on February 28, 2006, 03:53:18 PM
1024x768 (I dont have a TFT :-( )

but it lags with 800x600 aswell

umm, U said something with textures, I found out that on the machine with the 6800 Ultra the max. texture size is 4096x4096 , isn`t that enough?

That's plenty.  All I was saying is that it's the textures that use up the most memory on your card.

Oh, anyways do you know what I can do to get that water excrement fixed?

I'm not sure.  It's probably just a problem with ati's crappy drivers.  I guess you'll just have to turn off reflective water for now.

I have a GeForce FX 5200 w/ 128 megs of RAM and mine works pretty well.  I did the framerate display thing and in arenaball, my FPS was dropping down to 12-15 FPS when I was moving over the water area.  When I looked away from the water, my FPS shot above 200.

That's when you turn off the water. The water makes it lag to hell. And back.

Why do people keep using the word "lag" for poor framerate?  It makes it rather confusing.  Lag is when you have high latency to a server.

What other word is to be used?
Title: Re: New Water Bug

"Choppy" is what I use.

Whatever works. I believe lag is used for both because the result looks slightly the same. Game stopping/starting or just running kinda slow.

I think I gotta turn off reflective water for now, but I hope that it will run better in build 17....

on my "old" Geforce 4200, I get some nice 200-400 fps without water, and it drops to like 80-120 with reflective water.  Can't believe it has to do with the hardware on yours... get new drivers.

But I heard that installing a new driver if an old one is already existing can cause some problems...

and I think I have the latest driver....

I`ll try it with a FX 5200 card, but If I go to Nvidia Page and download the driver, its the same As I already have installerd:-(

AgentSmith, try the tweaked Omega Drivers for ATi cards here: http://www.omegadrivers.net/ (http://www.omegadrivers.net/)

they are tweaked and optimised so you get the best performance possible out of your card (and your card rocks anyway).

Ive got a poor old Radeon 9600XT 256mb and i can run the reflective water no problems, which is a bit of a piss take given how good you say your spec's are compared to mine.

hope you get it sorted,

- Dagless

actually, now i think on, something pure just said intrigued me..

you said: I`ll try it with a FX 5200 card, but If I go to Nvidia Page and download the driver, its the same As I already have installerd:-(

but in the first post you said you had a X850, which is an Ati Radeon card... so why would you have nvidia drivers installed with that card in?
