Is there a maximum size to maps, and if so, is there a way to enlarge it? I'm thinking of making a map based on my school...

The limits are +/- 4096 units in each direction, so you have 8192 units to work with, which translates to roughly 877x877x877 feet.  There's no way to increase this limit without adding a bunch of extra bandwidth and breaking compatibility with previous versions.
