Title: Dubstep
Post by: jitspoe on May 04, 2011, 10:17:48 PM
ViciouZ keeps going on about dubstep, so I'm curious what some good examples of the genre are.  I've poked around a bit, and everything sounds pretty similar to Mr. Oizo's Flat Beat.

lol, I was just thinking how people who comment on dubstep videos on youtube really love their dubstep when I saw this:

Quote
I love how people expess their feeling of dubstep. Most comment have to do with jizzing yourself....if this is true i dont think i wanna go to a dubstep concert.

Enjoy the music people! No-one wants to hear the comment about your penis that you copied from the comments on some other dubstep song!

Flux Pavilion - I can't stop (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VJlA3Fn868w)
Doctor P - Sweet Shop (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oZkzcm7ubQg)
Circus Records are pretty darn good for this kinda stuff.

Skrillex - Scary Monsters And Nice Sprites (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WSeNSzJ2-Jw) - you may well have heard it
Skrillex's Remix of Cinema by Benny Benassi (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fcz8fIMW_AM)
Skrillex has his own kinda dinosaur bass.

Caspa - Well 'Ard (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nKNErbJKSYQ)

Benga - Man On A Mission (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=THAtxL9Pe6g)

Magnetic Man have a few good tracks as well, what with being composed of 3 legends and all.

everything sounds pretty similar to Mr. Oizo's Flat Beat.
Depending on where you look there's a fair amount of variation, although it is true that youtube is very fond of song with large wobble bass drops, mainly so they can comment about how the song is filthier than xyz :)

I listen to pretty much everything ViciouZ said. Although I actually listen to everything from reggae and whatnot to dubstep.

Nero - Guilt (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=85wgzj8hZyg)
Deadmau5 - Ghosts N' Stuff (Nero Remix) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Gb3faOzvBk)

Might not be what you're looking for but I just like Chase and Status alot.
Chase & Status - Flashing Lights (Feat. Sub Focus & Takura) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0L2M7Its9C4) -- Their work with Plan B (<3) is pretty cool.

So I was curious about the wobble bass stuff and started tinkering in FL Studio with a free synth VST called Synth1.

Kind of fun to play around with.

The best dubstep album ever is "Untrue" by Burial. It's even one of the best albums of the 2000s. Every other dubstep album sounds pretty poor after listening to this one. Pretty hard to get into it first, but when you REALLY get into it, oh god you will think it's amazing.

LOL forgot my password so I created a new account (S8NSSON here in case no one knows).

Just discovered dubstep not too long ago.
Actually, in my reading what I like is really BROSTEP, as the UK peeps claim DUBSTEP is more trancy then agressive.

What i'm listening to now:
Knife Party - Rage Valley (Bonfire and Centipede are very powerful, but whole EP is good)
Skrillex (Bangarang mostly, but all of them)
Trolley Snatcha - Subtext
Kill The Noise - KILL KILL KILL
Datsik - (I have it all in one folder don't know which album or EP is what)
Billy Van - The Cardigan EP (for when I don't want too much aggression which is seldom)

I've tried to like Excision, Bass Nectar, and most of the stuff people have mentioned (can't see Youtube links at work so don't know everything posted) but these I listed are what I dig so far. Am open to any suggestions...have to be similar to what I listed above though.

lol GUESS WHAT...yep I had to give it a try...
I'm just starting and have quickly realized a midi controller in soon in order to be able to do what I want to do.

These two tunes were all hand sequenced in Reason 5.
Godfather uses the Matrix to sequence, I'm Not Your Baby I sequenced everything but drums with the Piano Roll just to try.
They are baby steps, so don't judge too hard.

Godfather: http://www.kcharron.net/Godfather.mp3

I'm Not Your Baby: http://www.kcharron.net/imnotyourbaby.mp3

Comments welcome...as soon as I get a keyboard/sequencer I hope to make something better.

Centipede: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CSemARaqGqE

GYDHOH sounds the most complete.  Most of the others felt kind of ... empty, if you know what I mean.  I would also suggest adding some different sounding sections, and maybe alternating back and forth like a verse and chorus so they don't sound so repetitive.
