Title: Inspirational Pictures for Mapping
Post by: jitspoe on June 03, 2011, 11:40:53 AM
Figured I'd start a thread to dump pictures that I find inspirational for making maps.  Photos, screenshots, concept art, ... feel free to post whatever.

These are from Sniper Ghost Warrior:

Looks nice but it's a bit hard to realize those pictures when there are so many trees etc. and in BSP you can' do that. And without these trees the map doesn't look so great, I think. ;)

that would be a lot of work  :o but if well mapped it´ll be a really nice map.  ::)

Think so, too. ;) Maybe the first picture would be possible (without this hills in the background), but the second one is impossible. :D

You don't have to make them look exactly alike, you just make it similar and take the ideas of the images. The point is to make on that theme, not an exact replica. IMO pretty cool thread get peoples ideas flowing and boom, start a map.

Sure. You can't make such a map, but it would be strange, if you have a picture and make a map from it and at the end the map doesn't looks like the picture. You know what I mean? :D

If only DP had these sorts of maps :p

What T3RROR15T said: Other map format. :)

Hush payl, this is already on the feature vote and has been discussed as a possibility for some time.
Just shift it to quake2world's map format/renderer, maybe with model collision added as well, less changes needed, same editors can be used, more efficiency and potential for nicer graphics...

But i still think this is unrealistic if we have problem with things like "restructuring game code". Maybe i'm pessimistic, but i still think many feature votes are funny (like voting on bugfix).
But okay, i'm hope that i'm wrong and in 2012 we will have graphics like screenshoots above...

That would be cool. The one where it seems like a tower, but the whole side is cut off? Would defiantly be unique. Looks to me they would be more of a QUAKE  style map though.

Lol hell no not midnight, those maps are really awfull to play on, what i mention are maps such as Shazam 1-2 (3 is always being played) like nhb , or that siege castle map , i mean the more mappers pball has, the more maps it has ---> the more maps pass out

This is why I would like to see an "official" map pack released once or twice a year where the highest quality polished maps that the community want to play will be released. They would include map previews, map info and all the nessicary files needed. This would stop maps like shock which probably took 1-3 hours to make and compile being played over high quality maps that actually involve strategy like carpathian for example. This way new maps coming through will be what the community want they could vote on which maps to include.

I don't know just an idea I had in my head for a while thought it might be useful.

An improved idea of your idea;
Every server that has its unique ''old skool'' map rotation, but maps such as shock are entertaining for me and some other people since i have played them over 2-3 years, and it just reminds me old things, but i would suggest something like this:
One big map, one close map, one big map etc rotation, it would be much more entertaining
Title: Re: Inspirational Pictures for Mapping
Post by: omni on March 16, 2013, 07:19:45 AM
I'm sure someone could create a remake of shock but wouldn't you need the creators permission first? Even still I'd remake I with aligned textures etc.

I didn't mean shock was bad itself everyone finds different things fun, it's just that it is poorly made; in contrast to a well made map like carpathian.

A newbie might be put off when joining a game that does not look professionally made because of it's maps especially when playing a popular map like shock.

I think it has a lot to do with everyone's idea of a great map being different. Personally I like Shock, regardless of how simple it is. I'm not the best player but that's perfectly fine. Shock, and maps similar to it, have paths that anyone regardless of skill level can reach. Technically putting everyone on the same playing field. Although I wouldn't mind if all maps were updated with aligned textures. Would you still need permission if that's all you were changing to someone else's map?

I'm more in favor of cap0ne's idea of map rotations.

Back to the topic of the thread. I like that last picture a lot. There's something about it that seems fresh and clean. o_O And it reminds me of two books I've read. I also liked one of those subway pictures. It seemed futuristic!

Really fun field as well. That's at challenge park xtreme (CPX) in Joliet, IL. Played many games there. The pictured fields are Bedlam and armageddon and they are right next to each other.

The most fun you can have at either, is when they combine the gameplay to both fields, and call it a city battle. There is a hill separating the fields and one city has to take over the other.

In the summer I went on a holiday (vacation) in Germany and the Czech Republic. The Prague metro system inspired me to make a metro map. Starting work on it soon.

Im not so sure, narrow tunnels are never very good for gameplay to be honest :s i think you would definitely have to include something abit more open like Grand Central Station (http://www.stylewisetrendfoolish.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/grandcentral-station.jpg) as the mid of the map, with tunnels only leading to the bases or something. :)

[My picture was probably a bad example of what it could look like but you get the idea  ;)]

@not_payl_obviously I was thinking the mid could be a bit dark, flashing beam lights, maybe?
@wasp I've actually been to New York as well so yeah that sounds good.
@rockitude I have been working on mine for a few weeks also, however I thought it would be easier just to say I am just starting work on it so that I could get feedback on the idea. I will pm you some screenshots if you would like.

@not_payl_obviously I was thinking the mid could be a bit dark, flashing beam lights, maybe?
Problem with darkish is that:
1. Most people have their brightness set very high up, in fact almost nobody has it set correctly, as game requires.
2. So either you make map very dark to be a little dark for most people and dark as excrement for people who set their brightness correctly, or you can make it correct dark for few people, and bright for most.

So i would generally advise against darkness, it won't look good either way now.

Model instead?
I've been wondering about that, I'm not really sure how models are vis'd/drawn. Could anyone elaborate on it?
Title: Re: Inspirational Pictures for Mapping
Post by: jitspoe on January 28, 2014, 10:58:25 AM
Unfortunately, func_models are treated like any other entity, so, while they usually draw faster, they add bandwidth (so having a huge number of them is a bad idea).  They are also vis'd based on a single point, which is why tree models sometimes disappear if you can't see the base of them.

You could probably pull it off using big groups of icicles, and only having 5-10 visible at once.  Ultimately, this is the type of thing where we really need a new map format...

Some day... maybe...

I really want to make a better lighting compiler to get visuals more like this...

This map really looks awesome ingame! (I got Q3)

In terms of shaders and lightning...
The lighting itself would be possible! If you really know how to...
these shaders... hmmm maybe possible with texture scripts and some nice brushwork...

Looks ingame a lot better!

EDIT: I'm trying to remake a similar map... Looks like fun!
Maybe Several Maps with modes in one map? I know how to!

Really? I think that arghrad/modified qrad3 should be able to do the lighting on that quite nicely, if slowly - the limitations you'd run into would be lightmap resolution and MAX_PATCHES, and they would need at least a BSP format upgrade to solve anyway. I mean, that example was probably rendered in q3map, which isn't exactly a quantum leap :)

I didn't say it would be particularly difficult, just that I wanted to do it.  Arghrad, unfortunately, applies uniform ambient light.  What would be better is to have something that combines direct sunlight with old-style sky lighting for ambient light (probably trivial to add if the Arghrad source was available... sadly I haven't been able to get in touch with Argh! in a long time).  Even better would be to sample from the colors in the skybox.  That's effectively what was done here -- the map author added 200 sun lights to the map and adjusted the color according to the colors in the skybox.
