Title: ATi or nVidia
Post by: afortier on June 13, 2006, 12:27:32 PM
I used to be an nVidia fan before I got a new system with integrated ATi Radeon. 6x anti-aliasing is awesome! Whitch do you prefer?

nVidia, I currently run a GeForce 7900GT that does all I need it to, I had bought an ATI X1900XTX only to find that the latest ATI drivers for linux that claimed to support it wouldn't cooperate with it, it then fried in windows while playing TombRaider:Legend..., which was ridiculous because the waranty covered it for overclocking to some point, and yet it fried without overclocking it.

Hopefully when AMD buys ATI they'll work on some better drivers and software support.  8)

I have an ATI X1600 pro.

I have some driver problems on linux like tinman says though.  :-\

There are a few choices of drivers, you can use the gpl, or their are a few private drivers. I know this by using eLive whitch apon inital boot gives you driver choices for video. By the way, this is a poll.

nVidia.  I had an ATI and had driver problems on windows.  It also had heat issues and would lock up all the time.  I built a new system with an nvidia card and it has yet to lock up or crash.

Nvidia is way better than ATI, since a lot of ATI's cards only has OpenGL 1.5, 2.0 is standard of Nvidia!

Nvidia cards have better shaders too!
Title: Re: ATi or nVidia
Post by: TinMan on June 13, 2006, 02:37:35 PM
um...no, ATI cards have better shaders, ATI chipsets are actually really good, they just need to improve on their software/drivers and the companies that use those chipsets in their cards need to have them cooled properly. Before my X1900XTX fried, it was running way better than any card I'd ever used before (in windows).
In linux I love nvclock, if you don't have it and you're an OC'er then I recommend it.

Aren't the shaders standardized more or less?  How do you qualify which ones are "better"?

I've always used and ATi card for DP, and been fine.  Currently I'm useing an ATi x600pro 128mb external and get 600+ fps, although i cap it at 300.  Before i had anATi Radeon 7000 series, it was a 64mb card and i got an even 60fps.  Never had to update drivers or anything.  But if you're looking for the best cards on the market then I'd go with nVidia.  Why? because they are getting more ppularity than ATi, their cards our perform ATi (especially when overclocking) and im general run quieter and cooler than ATi cards.  Not to meantion that for a while the geForce 6600GT outperformed every ATi card on the market, and it took ATi about 3 cards (x800 x1600 x1800) in order to match its power only to be overwhelmed with the new 7200.

What a heated debate, I like ATI's mascot, CATALYST as opposed to the nVidia fairy...

Its kind of clunky, i wish they would integrate the settings into a page in the desk.cpl like everyone else

Haha, yeah, the thing takes like 5 minutes to come up.  I go to change my options and I'll be sitting there wondering if I loaded it or not.  Really annoying if you want to change something quickly and get back into a game.  Plus it has that godawful skin that almost takes up more space than the controls themselves.

As for mascots,  nalu > catalyst (http://pclab.pl/zdjecia/artykuly/pila/x800_vs_6800u/nalu01-big.jpg). :)

i got a radeon 9800 pro, and i'm not very pleased with it. I got many problems with "the recovery service. Means: I started my pc, and suddenly without a "high grafic exe" my pc shuts down with a error: the recovery service had locked your card, or something like that.. I had to use Omega drivers, and even then, i had to use a strange configure, until it works good...
Now, i'd buy a nVidia.
Title: Re: ATi or nVidia
Post by: jitspoe on June 15, 2006, 12:21:11 PM
Yeah, ATI cards crash so much they had to build a special "recovery" mode into the drivers so they wouldn't crash your whole PC.  It only works some of the time.

LoL SkateR! My laptop has a ATI Radeon 9100 Series and it ran better than my old, old Nvidia Geforce 4 mx 400, so i did the cheap thing, Paid 20$ for a Nvidia mx 4000 OC'd 128mb AGP 8x, hehe and i still get 1000fps when i look at a wall :D!,

TinMan, yeah the 7900gt looked okay.. but i heard they have ALOT of bugs in them.. Id just go with the Quad SLI and 4 7950's :D. that would be amazing!

*Jitspoe, Why is Spell Check not working?

Post by: TinMan on June 18, 2006, 05:42:25 PM
Actually so far there are no bugs with my nVidia GeForce 7900GT, I've been overclocking it once in a while for Quake 4 using the program "nvclock", and I just used the nvidia-glx drivers in Ubuntu's repositories and they worked fine. I had to bust into my xorg.conf to enable higher resolutions though, but I'm running 1280x1024 fine now after doing that.

Get a single 7900 or 7800 instead of two 6600's.  I'm not sure if it'll be cheaper, but it should be faster.

Yeah, but I dont like any geforce 7's b/c SaTaN bought a 7600gt, and You cant use forceware drivers on it, the GPU cant be over clocked b/c of the HT with the processor, and it lags on every game besides like emulators....*Mario World* runs great on the pc.. lol, Anyhow... i never heard of Gaim? lol!, But for all i know... i may just buy the same system i had last time... Dual core 3.0ghz with 1gb of ram, and a nvidia 4 mx 4000 agp 8x
Title: Re: ATi or nVidia
Post by: TinMan on June 26, 2006, 06:50:07 PM
eiii: NEVER USE GAIM FOR IRC!!! EEEK!!! lol that's what xchat is for.
I use Gaim because I run linux and I like the handy xmms "currently playing" settings for auto-profile, they let me put what song I'm listening to in my profile and my away messages and stuff like that. I use xchat because I already made all my irc scripts for it a long time ago and don't wanna remake them for a different app.

My 7900GT runs fine in linux and in windows. I overclock it once in a while using NV-clock, but its not necessary at all, I just like having a really high FPS in games. I play Quake 4 and stuff with it normal and it runs fine locked at 60 FPS, I'd adjust it to go higher but the whole Doom 3/Quake 4 engine gets messed up if you set it to use any different maxfps, I tried 250, and it did it, but the timing in the game got messed up and pb kicked me, lol.

I run most of my games maxed out in settings with a res of 1280x1024.

Yo!! I figured out why SaTaN's System lags games!! The Refresh Rate On The Monitor  Lags It!!!, He had it hooked up to  a TV running Doom3 On Ultra High With Everything on and it didnt lag once!!, so He is buying a new monitor that supports 105hz refresh rate!
