Title: New Map: Hill country
Post by: supertanker on June 15, 2006, 10:39:20 PM
So its a crappy map. It won't be for long.

I've been screwing around with Gensurf for awhile, so I decided to make a simple outdoors map. I might make a river or something in the middle. The bases will be relatively unprotected, and there will most likely be an underground passage. This is NOT NEAR COMPLETE, I still have a LOT of work to do just to get the base done. This is my 'sketch' for a layout, though:

Reminds me of oddjob, I hope you're planning on throwing in some objects in there, not just stuff to hide behind, but ramps/jumps would be lots of fun.

The hills look nice and smooth. Throw in some 8 oz co2 tanks and steel barrels (spawn with them), and maybe a few bunkers/hay bails, and this map would be fun. I love pgp/steel barrel maps. Its like rail wars in q2. One thing all the current pgp maps lack is steel barrels. Arm.bsp is terrible, strictly cause of the fact that it doesnt incorporate steel barrels, this means no accuracy.

You guys can't be serious. I know it's his first map, but how could you possibly say this would be fun? Wow.

lun, have you ever played Oddjob.bsp? Its awesome, as long as nobody spawn kills its pgp madness!

lun, did you even read his post?! This is by no means finished, and he was just giving a sketch of a layout he has for now. Plus, this is by no means his first map, supertanker is quite an experienced mapper. Go soak your head before splurting out things you don't know about, moron!

Bugged :P

Not really a layout...

More of a box. Even if there is a river in the middle.

Looks great. move the angle of the sun so that both bases are in sun or in shade.
Looks great though.

I am aware it isn't finished, but look at the size of it. Any small box map sucks. I assumed it was his first considering the map he was making. Either way, I do not care what you think about anything I say. Go soak my head? How about you go jump off a bridge. Thanks pal.

lun, have you ever played Oddjob.bsp? Its awesome, as long as nobody spawn kills its pgp madness!
Yes I have played oddjob.bsp. It is a horrible map. If you want a pgp map there is many decent ones that aren't an open box with no skill whatsoever.

Supertanker: Throw some stuff in the middle so I can still not like it. And can have backup as to why this map sucks so I don't have complete idiots thinking a box map will be good. Thanks.

Bombs away is an odly shaped box map.

Now calm down you two...

Anyways, new version. I added rocks, plants, some lights, a river, and switched it to a nighttime map. I think it looks much better, but this map won't be primarily for looks. It will be for excellent gameplay .

And uh, lun? box maps can be very fun....

I suggest a nade in the middle of each side of the water, that way its risky to get because the water has you slowed down and its way out in the middle, yet if you are sneaky enough to get it you have a nade on an open map and can probably take out two people easily if they are behind the same rock.

That was the skybox, I think. I replaced it with stars. You know, it would look kind of stupid to have a really bright sky and a really dark map.

No the map is not dead. I just had some trouble getting ArghRad to work under Linux

Anyways, I have been altering the map sublty over time. I added a sniper tower on the other two sides (still working on those, only got one up now)

I cannot decide on what way to get into the sniper areas. Should I use a ramp/staircase, an elevator (func_plat) a door object (better than func_plat, because it cannot be held in the up position) or a ladder?

Also, I have weapons set up like this:

spawn with PGP, 100pballs, 100 hopper, brass barrel. 2 7oz c02, and stingrays/vm68 are in the map. Is lower power weaponry a good idea?

Oh, and BTW is there any way to get rid of the time disrepancy kick? under Linux my computer struggles with bots and I end up getting kicked from my own server :(

Oh, and just to discourage you wall hackers and other various idiots, I put clip brushes around the entire map. Enjoy :)

Nice map, im guessing you used a program to generate that smooth looking terrain.
or did you made them by hand?
Title: Re: New Map: Hill country
Post by: supertanker on August 01, 2006, 11:03:16 PM
I used Gensurf to generate the terrain. But I did tweak the rest of it by hand to get it smooth and the rest the way I want it.

Oh and by the way: to anyone who has  a server and some friends who are willing to beta test, I would appriciate it if you would like to battle-test this map. I finished the two sniper towers (with good ol ladders), now it needs tested. Any takers?

I have a dedicated server set up for beta testing on EV1, but I'm heading out to quakecon tomorrow so I probably won't get a chance to put it up.

That's fine, I just discoverd a couple small bugs in the map I need to correct anyways, and it takes an inordirate ammount of time to go through ArghRad.

supertanker... that map looks great, cant wait to actually see how it plays but nice design for a box map and nice hills they look really smooth

Ah, the joys of pre-made GenSurf terrains. Looks good for a box map, but like all box maps, too open.

yeah, i already made a few suggestions so it didnt looked like a box.

what will clip brushes do to wallhackers?
Title: Re: New Map: Hill country
Post by: supertanker on August 02, 2006, 06:13:13 PM
I meant wall jumpers, or people that try to get up on top to snipe. That is what the sniper platforms are for!

What the hell? WTF is this? Error: MOVETYPE_PUSH with a non bsp model

 ???  ??? wow, weird error
Title: Re: New Map: Hill country
Post by: supertanker on August 03, 2006, 05:04:30 PM
This map, unfortunately, has high R_Speeds because of its design. However, I usually get 20-40 fps or 40-50 without reflective water (with only a 32 meg vid card)

Updated it, after it compiles (that takes a LONG time for some reason) I will release beta 1.

BTW the cause for that error was a func_wall not bound to anything. If you ever get the error look for unbound brush entities.
Title: Re: New Map: Hill country
Post by: Cobo on August 03, 2006, 05:10:54 PM
It probably takes a long time because of the terrain.
Title: Re: New Map: Hill country
Post by: Eiii on August 03, 2006, 05:19:18 PM
And I thought it took a long time because of the boxy things. Silly me. :P
Title: Re: New Map: Hill country
Post by: Cobo on August 03, 2006, 05:23:48 PM
Why does it take long to compile?
a) Box-like map
b) Terrain
c) Those rocks
d) Your computer sucks
e) All of the above
:P

Its true oh its true!!!!- Blazing Saddles.

Nice map, please load it when its ready on the beta server. This one I might acutally host.

Hi cobo, finish your dam maps then post.

Title: Re: New Map: Hill country
Post by: Eiii on August 03, 2006, 06:59:24 PM
Why does it take long to compile?
a) Box-like map

Box-like maps generally take shorter times to compile than larger maps.
Title: Re: New Map: Hill country
Post by: Cobo on August 03, 2006, 07:02:56 PM
Well, not this one.
Title: Re: New Map: Hill country
Post by: Eiii on August 03, 2006, 07:25:08 PM
But it's not due to the boxyness that the compiling is taking a long time. It's because of the terrain/lack of 'detail'ing.
Title: Re: New Map: Hill country
Post by: supertanker on August 04, 2006, 11:06:38 PM
I "detail"ed all of the rocks, the bridge, the fancy new supports I built (sorry no screens yet but I will leave it on all night to compile, I am such an idiot I manged to compile it finally and discovered I had an unbound Func_wall, making a MOVETYPE_PUSH error, so now I have to do it again)

Also, after I finally get it compiled (maybe the ArghRad -extra flag is the problem too) I will give it to a private beta tester. Then, public beta. Loial, thanks, I would like it if you could host it.

Title: Re: New Map: Hill country

That would have terribly high r_speeds. And not that amusing, if it's just the same terrain repeated over and over again.
Title: Re: New Map: Hill country
Post by: Cobo on August 06, 2006, 04:35:09 PM
unless you make it different kinds of terrains, but yeah TERRIBLE r_speeds.
Title: Re: New Map: Hill country

I have a feeling he doesn't want to make different types of terrain so much as use the ones Gensurf has by default.

Are you using the high quality final compile?  If so, that will take a long time.  Also, open maps tend to take a long time to compile in general.
Title: Re: New Map: Hill country
Post by: supertanker on August 10, 2006, 11:33:57 PM
Remember, I use radiant. Different terms. But, for lack of a better term, I use the high quality compile.  Everything is normal except the arghrad -extra switch.

I still don't understand why ArghRad is what takes so looong. After the first 2 out of the 3 stages, it just sits there for 3-4 hours. Then it finally does the third stage in about 3 seconds.

Yes but most maps don't wait 4 hours between the two stages.

Oh sh*t, my last modification made my r_speeds go up to 2400 wpoly in one part of the map. Need to fix, NOW.
