I just wanted to start a simple discussion on why people aren't that active, and what we can do to make people more active.
I'll start:
It seems every time I want to play, everybody is on speed servers, jump servers, and on the rare occasion they're on normal servers, it's playing a map I don't care for or it's a bunch of new players that aren't really fun to play with. I also have a ton of other games I'm playing, and time spent related to Paintball2 is usually doing development.
What would make me play more:
More people playing with standard settings on good maps. Adding a feature to the server browser that would notify me when this happens would mean I could just jump in if I have time.

Delete the bans. I know everyone was spamming this on every topic and its actually not fair to all the other players who didnt hack.. but i dont believe that another feature would make all the people play again...
And this is not meant as support for all the cheaters around.. but to be honest its the only way to get the old players back to game..

I just think all of us old players are getting "older". Some having family's, Full Time Jobs or just don't game anymore. The time to sit on the computer is minimal now compared to 24/7 as a kid.

I always find myself more engaged when I'm making a new map. As it draws near completion, I get people to test it out, and then when its released I stalk the serverbrowser waiting for people to match on it (or pub on it)
I have introduced the game to many people over the last few years, and the order of their interest/timeline of playing is almost always something similar to the following:
-Only play on speed servers-
-Discover Jumping-
-Have Cuso Teach Jumping-
-Pwn Speedservers-
-Get frustrated by speedservers (too many n00bs)-
-Try playing in real pubs/some pugs or maybe I drag them into a match-
-Get bored because they are so behind the curve in terms of gameplay/jumping/map knowledge they quit-
-When they want to play (very randomly) we only pub, because they don't wanna just get rolled by people who know how to play-
-Eventually stop playing all together-
-One or two stuck around just to jump, but do not enjoy matching or applying jumping to maps they have never seen-
I am unsure how to facilitate the transition from n00b to moderately decent, because once you are aware of the "larger dp playstylez," it takes a remarkable amount of effort to learn everything. People can just play COD: limited number of maps, very easy, thousands of people and friends playing all the time.
I think the tutorial map is a step in the right direction. The primary problem is still the division between IRC DP and PubStaR DP. Bridge this gap, and you might find people are willing to tough out the sucky period and get good :D

I only enjoy matching, and there's just not enough talent or activity for that to work out. Plus, there's no tournaments or even enough teams to consider having a tournament. I only really pub if I'm waiting to get a match, which isn't often anymore. I guess pubs would be more fun if they had more talent in them too. So pretty much the lack of other talented players is why I don't play much anymore.
Other games just allow for competitive play much easier.
To improve this? I don't think it's possible. Maybe changing the ball speed since the biggest difference between good/average/bad players is curving bullets and consistent far/close range aiming. I don't think learning to jump is a problem, most players catch on to that pretty fast.
There's also way to many maps in this game. Most of which are excrement (not just my opinion, visually they are excrement, this is ignoring gameplay). I don't understand how people complain about "playing the same maps over and over" when DP2 has one of the largest amounts of different maps played in comparison to other games.
I think the only way to improve the competitive scene is for it to grow. It wont fix itself within, it needs new people. So the way to make people play more, would be to draw in more players - while finding a way to lower the learning curve and getting them on mIRC (or maybe a in-game chat created instead of having to get mIRC).
-- Less maps = lower learning curve as its less to learn --- but, "lesser talented teams" usually play 'random' maps vs better teams since it gives them a better chance to win. So not sure if that helps or hurts by having less maps?

I got tired of playing wobluda/airtime/daylight against senix and other mexicans.
also, it takes 20 seconds to find an enthralling match on league, the game a lot us DPers are on now, so its more enjoyable at this point in time, rather than wait 10 minutes to play the same people over and over again on the same maps.
id play more if we had newer people to play with. or if ricks online.

Public servers are empty... No active matching scene.
More cups and good matches. The matches against myers/shk/cc,..,.always were fun but unfortunately that doesnt happen that often :(

Pros:
-A variety of maps.

Cons:
-Most are poor unfinished maps with misaligned textures and brushes. (At least 3/4 if not more).
-New people have a hard time finding their way around on one map, let alone thousands.
-People pick random unheard of maps in matches so they can beat the other team.
I've missed quite a few points but I think the ones I listed are the main ones. I really do think we need to either;
a) New Engine that supports a new map format and start fresh with maps.
b) 50? maps (that are fully completed) come with download and can't be added to? Something like that.
c) Seriously just clean up the maps, delete thousands of those poor ones and just focus on a select few so new players can actually get a hang of it.
Tbh, I'd really like it if there was say 10? maps, and every release of a new build, like 3 or 4 more maps that are completely finished are released with it.
ANYWAY, that probably didn't make any sense, so please feel free to correct me.

+1 to Rick's idea of releasing new maps every so often with new builds. Having 10ish maps, then every few builds a few nice - well made maps are released. (Maybe in a form of a mapping competition where the community ends up voting? Everyone can continue releasing maps all day, but only 1 map for each build gets chosen based off community voting). It would get mappers to put more effort in theirs maps, and their efforts get rewarded. No more idiots releasing random ugly maps.
That would give people a reason to map, it would lower the skill gap between players (maps being more known), and it would give the players something to look forward to with new builds.

Compare LoL to dp, LoL wait time for a 5v5 match: about 10 seconds, Dp: Hourssssss, the games dead, give up.

First of all, Lack of talent/people avoiding. Honestly unbanning everyone besides toxiic is the best "quick" fix to getting this game active again. I mean it's not the best idea, but what do we have to lose?

Maybe not a mapping Competition but more like just a vote at the end of the month for which maps should be added? Basically the same though :P I really think server admins shouldn't have a choice of which maps to upload to their servers, the Mapping Committee/Jitspoe/etc should.

The only maps we've chosen recently have been macabre and destiny, which in my opinion, have great gameplay. Destiny looks nice too! Didn't even know you still played. I haven't matched ya in years!
I'd love to fix macabre if anyone has the .map? :P

@Jitspoe- im fully aware that you hate me but this game is full of retards that get into your committee based on their popularity. nothing more.
Your best bet is to UNBAN EVERYONE and change the rules to ONE AND DONE.
Oh and you have people like Clipz who act like they're trying to help the game but hold grudges from things that happened years ago and not letting you integrate back into the community. #DOUCHE

I get tired of a lot of games once I've unlocked and tried everything out, I'm only still playing BF3 because I'm trying to get all the achievements/medals/dogtags/weapon unlocks and all that. Some form of XP or unlockable progression might get people to stay for longer.
Other than that, the same as everybody else; I try to play and there's always one 30 person speed server on oth.bsp and getting lined 5 times makes me ragequit.

second off its the brazilians that pick the beta maps against us, we just play the ones we like.
third off, play some new maps? i dont know what you consider to be a weird map that we play because all the maps we play like summer mystique and propaint2 which have allll ben around forever.

now on topic, I have recently uninstalled for good due to the community and lack there of, i think unrated said he got tired of playing senix, well i think we all feel that way.
i dont see the maps being the problem, no one pubs anyway so the servers and their map rotation shouldnt eb the problem. All american servers speed or other wise are owned by superman or clipz which they will gladly take suggestions to changing things. So the problem isnt the servers, Its that you havent asked.
As for maps in matches, it is what you chose, again no one can complain there.
all in all, people are moving on to different games, and none of the new players are sticking around or creating clans, that's all it comes down too. there have been multiple "get newbies into the clan seen/irc" but nothing really happens.

Foxhound, the point is that with say 10 maps in this game, it allows for new players to learn the game. Jitspoe get's enough downloads per day that the game SHOULD be active. Tutorial map was step 1 in retaining players, better textures and models is another, but for the long run limiting the maps is likely to be a simple fix to actually help the game.
It does multiple things:
- Makes mappers have to put far more effort in maps, as something like 1 map per build (roughly every 4-5months) would be released. It would be like a competition for them, and with only 10 maps in a game it's far more impressive to have your name on a map. More effort in maps, better maps made for the future of the game. Instead of idiots releasing their first maps, and getting them on servers.
- Lowers the skill gap between players. A player right now will be playing Italy/Shock all day, then come on IRC to try and match, and end up playing Pbcup_renoir - They have no chance, and they don't even know the map. With 10ish maps, they have seen all these maps, and likely have played these maps 20+ times, knowing them inside out. If players enter the matching scene already knowing the maps + some/most jumps on them, the skill gap isn't as big - learning from other players is far easier too - training is also easier.
- Lowers the skill gap in the competitive scene. -- Matches will be far more interesting if you have a small choice in matchmaps. You can no longer pick a 'random' map to win 1 map, you also likely wouldn't be able to depend on 1 player carrying with individual skill. By having less maps, you'd know how each player will play each map, and teamwork will become a larger part of the game. Or at least, the difference between teams will likely be one of teamwork. (Assuming the 10 maps are balanced maps). --- PROOF OF THIS: Matches on propaint1 are always closer than Pbcup_renoir, and people don't even match on pp1 that often anymore.
- It improves the visual aspect of the game to new players - we would have a small number of well made maps, instead of seeing dhemap in pubs. (next step would be HR4 on download + model upgrade + rework the mapping).
- Would give Jitspoe far more credit from the community - since each build would also feature a map made by the community - so even if this build has just bug fixes, the community will probably be more interested in it as they get to match on a new map.
I mean, it's just my opinion. I'm sorry Jitspoe for kinda taking this off-topic ish. My first post was on it, now I'm just trying to explain my point as to what I believe would make myself and others potentially play more.

and when ur doing these committee votes for issues like the ban list.. stop. they don't even play. just have forum polls so that the people who actually play (or everyone) can choose what they want.

There are plenty of feature votes out there that I think would make the game a lot more interesting. If I could figure out how to get the source code working with Visual Studio, I wouldn't mind trying to see if I could implement them.

I only play matches.
-I have no interest in pubbing with players that have no urgency in proper gameplay.
-I have no interest in competitions and leagues. I only want to play when I'm available and want to play.
-I have no interest in what map I play, as long as it has some thought in it...
-I have no interest in my kdr, or what my stats are.
The only reason I play is because of the strategy of matches... The enjoyment of the game is only from the people who want to match. And let's face it, barely anyone who matches nowaday knows anything about gameplay strategy at all. Usually for matches all I do is goof off and run around to keep creating different random situations to cause different gameplay... Having no strategy or just camping on flags is whats killing the fun in this game, and it never works either... My team tries all the time to angst other teams to think about how they play, and maybe at some point they'll realize that it requires strategy, but what can you do when people don't think? And hacking kills the need for thinking, why let hackers back?
Some kind of solution? Don't know, maybe teach gameplay strategies and tutorials for matches? I don't really see any of the other current suggestions bringing fun gameplay back to the matching scene though. But that's what keeps me around...

noobs dislike 2 things myers, respawn time, and hard to play maps. You can't put on renoir and expect them to play, they will just leave, likewise you cant make all servers run renoir and not expect them to uninstall. Moot point.
And to say that they will learn to get better is optomistic, they play the pubs because its interesting and fun for them, they don't know anything about the clan scene nor will they probably every try to get involved. "must have mic/ irc" doesn't work. they just want to spawn camp and get lots of kills.
Here's a feature on the list that if implemented would PROBABLY make the clan scene better... Integrated buddy list/server browser that shows who is in the server playing. Also a search tab for people, or prefixes of clans. Since they don't go on irc, they can at least be with each other when they log on very easily.

Foxhound I don't think you're really understanding mine/rick's idea. The 10 maps would be balanced maps for both matching/pubbing, not super complicated maps. And I don't feel the need to repeat everything I said, cause you're just not understanding the main points, and I'm unsure how to make it more clear.

Edit2: Here are my reasons and suggestions:
I have to say, that i played more in the last two month as in the whole six month before. Maybe i missed something, maybe there was more activity in the forum (and development), so that i was more focused to paintball. Don't know it exactly. Another thing is our server. If there are some players on it, i join the game more often. Mostly i don't like the maps on other server. I want run, play and be able to get all flags easily, not glide on ice, jump all the time or fly through the whole map. Also, the server admins start a big server with more than 16 players, but don't care about the maps and their settings. On such a server, they need to create ent files with full player equipment and add more spawns on different places in the map. But on the most full server atm, you start like on a normal server, without equipment or in a line with other players. So it is no wonder, that there are a lot of spawnkillers. A spawn protection (you can not be eliminated for x seconds after a spawn) would eliminate that problem, but (until we have a spawn protection) it could be minimized if the mappers and server admins would be interested to solve that problem from the beginning. It's also not bad if the mappers and server admins would do it when we have a spawn protection.
Some other server settings, that support the liners/spawnkillers are guntemp (which most servers have turned off, but should be on) and slowballsbounce (on by default, should be off). Maybe elim is a problem too. Would it work to limit the lowest value on dedicated servers to 10 seconds or would it make problems with other gamemodes (has each gamemode an own setting or only a few)?
Especially soccer was very funny in the last weeks. So i would like to play more often maps with other gamemodes like pong, tdm or koth.
If there are good or bad players on a server is no problem for me. I play with both sorts. If a player would get exp/points for playing on a server, we could make a limit to join a server. Server for new and old players that have easy maps and server for more experienced players (1000 exp/points or more). I wouldn't limit the easy map servers only to new players (until 1000 exp/points). Each player should be able to see his own exp/points, but i wouldn't make the exp/points visible for all players on the page or in a ranking list (if the player don't want it = default).
A big problem is the performance of the game. There are a lot of players with lags and other players overflow on almost each mapchange. That should never happen. My computer (Intel Q6600, GeForce GTX 280) shouldn't have any problems with the game. I have high fps and a low ping, but the gameplay doesn't feel smooth for the last builds (don't know when it started). I have often (not every time) some very small (but big enough to notice them) lags. They come and go for a few minutes. Thats annoying.
Another thing (maybe just me): Like i said above with the maps, the server admins don't care about their server. There are server that use build 21, 32 or 35 (build 36 is new, so build 35 is ok for a month). Update it !
Like MyeRs said: hr4 on download would be good. It wouldn't be bad, if the game downloads the new hr4 textures automatically from the server. But we need a check for it, that it won't download or overwrite a file, if a server admin uploads unofficial hr4 textures.
Something community related should also be integrated. I would like to see a friend list like on the feature vote that shows who is online and on which server. Maybe some kind of global chat, but not implement irc. It should be language specific and work on a lan server without internet connection too. Don't ask how that should be possible :P
To give the players the possibility to add a country at the dplogin account and show a flag of that country in front of the player name ingame (+ option to disable it) could help to find players with the own language, talk with them and maybe create a new clan.
What do you think about split the chat and the game messages?
What do you think about a "win back email"? Send players that haven't played for half a year an email with a special offer some informations about the last build and a "why not played"-survey link (like the uninstall survey).
Please do not unban everyone.

Propaint1 kills any server, to prove it, try to populate any of the servers idling 0 people with propaint1.bsp on. Just because you think it's a fair match map, doesn't mean players want to play on it. Stupid idea. This is also borderline dictatorship where you are controlling or at least trying to control the population. Also stupid idea. It's a free game, stop trying to limit excrement to your benefit, if the game dies, it dies.
Also, Don't have to give an attitude, cuz ill give it right back. (don't deny it INB4)

It's not about the maps he chose... Myers wouldn't be choosing the maps for the everyone to play lol. We're just saying a common thing in popular fps games is the small, official map pool that gets updated when the game is updated.
I like all of terrorist's ideas and foxhound's.(any type of ranking/stats system that would give people a reason to play. ranking systems always use to attract me to games for some reason.)

Well i went to my friends house on their computer and i could get it to work on a poor laptop with a fps about 30 with a ping of 200+ and it didnt even have a graphics card and only 1gb of ram and a poor processor then its either them downloading or running too many things at once. Or their computer is completly intercoursed

I play when I have some free time to kill, usually not that often.
this game is good for quick bursts and real easy to jump into quickly, either 5 minutes or an hour, its fast and still fun for me.
Its tough to get new players interested in this game for sure... its old, and compared to all the new games out nowadays, its graphics aren't very appealing to most modern gamers. This game really is an acquired taste, you have to take time to get into it. Most likely the easiest way to get new players into it is having friends who already play it or will join with them.
teaching them the basics may help get some to stay (tutorial). implement goals/achievements, something for players to strive for and earn while getting better. Obvious target for Ads would be FPS players that want something quick and simple, although i'm not a huge FPS player myself and i ended up getting into it after a while.

There are two reason why I stopped pubbing (and playing)
1. Other good players stopped pubbing because they thought it's cool to chill 24/7 on IRC without even talking (with the only exception being post game flaming after matches).
A game needs a stable pub scene in order to be tournament worthy. Newbs never really get to see better players. They're not forced to get better
2. Stpid ************************************************************** Speed Server killed pubs for me. I started this game when CTF and 60 seconds respawn was standart (30 seconds is ok aswell). After Speed Servers went up (thanks to OTB who still try to deny the negative aspects of their servers with their strange reasonings. No, it didn't help the game. You just moved the player base from normal servers to Speed Servers ) every ******* ******* ****** newb played on 3 seconds spawn killing ub_cliff/discovery. This game has a one-shot-kill mechanic. It's not meant to be played with almost no respawn time. Players have to think how and when to move in order not to get killed. This is what makes PB challenging and fun, not constant reckless rushing without any purpose (Speed Server rounds almsot never end..)
But well, I don't pay for the server, so it's not my job to decide on the settings. It just causes empty server with more challenging gameplay

1. Pros have to step back a little on Pub´s against Newbies because its realy no fun to get dominated ALL the time. (jitspoe is right )
2. Older Players should show more respect against Newbies and help them.
3. Double Jump for everyone as default setting also settings like sensitivity that the difference is not so big for beginners. always run for examlpe to

This is where the game died even more. First instance when I first started playing there would actually be a decent amount of people playing, probably around 100 or so at any given time. Now since I have been off ban (like 2 years now) every server is a speed server practically and I never see more than around 30 people playing at once. And the only time there are that many people playing are when the speed servers are on shaz33 or italy (italy is possibly the second worst thing to happen to the game behind speed servers).

Time changes, we change and so our way to play also changes.
Multiplayer games are faster, bigger and louder today than some years ago.
Why are more newbies on speed servers than on pubs ?
Not because they want to destroy the Pub scene. They just want to have fun anyway.
Yes, it's crazy to see players on servers like "italy 24/7" with 40 players plus bots.
But in fact it looks like they have the fun that you/we/I miss sometimes.
And come on. In the last weeks i've been playing a lot on all kinds of servers.
Sometimes / most of time some older players on pub play like it's about their lifes or like it's a match.
To show what ? There are enough rentable servers.
And by the way: Last week I asked for mapwishes for a pub server right in this forum.
So everybody is free to bring ideas.

Multiplayer games are faster, bigger and louder today than some years ago.
Why are more newbies on speed servers than on pubs ?
Not because they want to destroy the Pub scene. They just want to have fun anyway.
Yes, it's crazy to see players on servers like "italy 24/7" with 40 players plus bots.
But in fact it looks like they have the fun that you/we/I miss sometimes.
And come on. In the last weeks i've been playing a lot on all kinds of servers.
Sometimes / most of time some older players on pub play like it's about their lifes or like it's a match.
To show what ? There are enough rentable servers.
And by the way: Last week I asked for mapwishes for a pub server right in this forum.
So everybody is free to bring ideas.

Well then, what do you want? We're not on these forums because we want to change the meta game of PB since most of us prefer standart game mode (or what used to be standart). Yes, there are people who play on speed servers regularly, and it's not like we don't want them, but they're hard to work with.
Like I already said: Dying is a penalty, and it should be treated as one. An even harder penalty than dying in CoD/Quake/CS. Speed Server completly take that away. You get killed on 24/7 italy? Np, after 3secs you'll get another nade and enough time to rush into another suicide mission (as long as you're not getting spawn killed) to wreak havoc, which will be complelty nullified 3 seconds afterwards.
Speed Server's take a good bunch of PB's identiy away . I'm not against different game types per se, but we do not have enough player's to sustain them without losing the "core game"

1. Pros have to step back a little on Pub´s against Newbies because its realy no fun to get dominated ALL the time. (jitspoe is right )
2. Older Players should show more respect against Newbies and help them.
This is funny as it is also what is killing off real paintball as well.
The graphics is the main issue with new people since most games now have so much eye candy to offer. Also what is the compatability with Windows 7 and 8? When XP is dumped so will 7 be in favor of only windows 8.
Adding better A.I. for offline play, less maps as stated many times before, solo play tutorial maps against either A.I. or one on one match with someone who will train and not trash new players.
If you need revenue to help improve the game future upgrades, have pay servers, nothing extreme but like $4 to $10 to join. Would keep a few from "hacking" as banning would cancel conract and would have to buy in again to play. Play offline or basic public servers free and pay to go to the rest.
The list could go on and on forever with pros and cons from people with different tastes and styles for online gameplay.

That ping issue could easily be solved by hosting your own server. A lot of people just learn how to play with the high ping. Two of our clan members play with a ping of over 200.

there's not really a "group" of players called spawners. That's just what you are when you constantly sit in the spawn area of a map and kill players the sec they revive. Unfortunately most/many of the spawners are the new players.
Continuous spawn killing is a big reason for the desire to play in servers with higher spawn times, having to wait 30-60 seconds prevents spawnkilling (ofc not 100%)
Sometimes a spawn kill is necessary/unavoidable depending on the situation (ex: when you know someone is about to respawn and don't want them to come up behind you while your attemping to cap), but the main problem in speed servers are those who chose to camp in the spawn areas instead of grabbing flag or better yet hunting the remaining enemy that are not spawn-trapped.
1 way to try and prevent spawnkilling would be for map-makers to take into consideration the location of spawn areas. set them up in such a way that it would be hard for someone to sit and spawn or easy for players to avoid being spawn killed. (maybe multiple spawn areas or making sure you start with a gun to return fire) [*these are all just possible solutions off the top of my head]

I do agree that map rotations are limited. People should try other maps. There are a few, very good maps that don't get played much because they're only on beta servers because the mappers have left the community and thus have stopped working on them. None of the popular servers have them which is a shame and the servers that do have them have a map rotation so large that it never gets to them.

I really think you should take carpathian off, no one in pubs likes that map. CARP is a match map I hate playing it in pubs when kids sit in the house sit there and line the flag. Remenissions is the worst map ever created for paintball. Period.

^ TBH pubbers love Carp. It's one of the few maps I notice that doesn't kill servers. Maybe because it's on every speed server, so newbies all know it.
As to camping: Camping is in every game. Most players who camp aren't very good, and most maps have pretty predictable camping spots. No way that should deter you from playing.
And to community: Yeah, the games dying. The community will only get worse as people care less and less. But I can assure you, most games have way worse communities. You just haven't been in the competitive scene in them.

I know how to play in high ping servers (I've been playing this game for a long time, but I am not a pro. When my router fails mi ping goes to 600 xD), I am referring to new players, for them the migration from COD to PBII is not easy (LOL).

The recent Natural Selection 2 tournament put on by the dev team was an amazing example of what would have really made DP great and I think would have me and my bros still playing:

I mainly stopped playing because of real life reasons; lost a lot of spare time I used to have. When the excrementstorm finally cleared, I thought of coming back to DP, but ultimately gave up for one single reason.
Which is the sheer immaturity of the comp community in this game, as seen in this very thread. Having played other games competitively(Tribes: Ascend is what I'm playing right now), DP definitely has the most immature and egoistic of them all. Of course, there are exceptions like blaa and the other ballers(I only really remember the euro players, didn't play much against americans).
The way most new players get into comp in pretty much all games is via newbie clans. The kind of clans that go around pubs asking for people to join. Usually, some clan members eventually see the rest of the clan is really bad and want to hop onto a new team/start a new team with some friends they made there. That's how I got into the comp community, and I'm pretty sure I wasn't the only one.
DP's comp community actively discourages newbies from making the leap of getting into a new clan by being outstanding idiots to absolutely everyone. Stepping it up a notch means playing against and dealing with these people, and most people just don't seem to want to do this.
I really don't know how to fix this and what's caused this, but I'm almost certain this is part of the cause why the comp scene isn't benefiting from the obviously high download numbers of the game.

Went in a few pubs the last two days, and it's just terrible.
No NA pubs with anyone in it, all speed servers, all terrible maps, and guntemp (which is annoying as intercourse when there's 12v12 on a small 1 path map, with 150ping).
Plus, each time I checked there was only 1 option to even go pub, some DcN server.
The only pubs I've ever went out of my way to play were 20s spawns on super simple maps. It made it fast gameplay, fast rounds, and nobody would get lost in the map. (ie, when Supermans Pub was popular, and people pubbed on shock/kalcastle/s33 etc..). 60s spawn pubs got boring, because rounds went too long (especially on PP1 when someone goes afk in spawn). 60s is good in matches because you set stuff up with it, and recon etc... in pubs you're not doing any of that.
Step 1 to get people to play: Delete italy from DP2 completely, no flow - no nothing.

Kill the speed servers and make the minimum re-spawn time 45 seconds. Nothing is more frustrating than playing an expansive map only to be killed by re-spawns once you get to the flag. The speed servers and short re-spawn times have also contributed to a culture of rushers who think that if you stop moving you're a dirty camper. This game used to be infinitely more tactical and now it's just about who can hit every ice jump and fly at a million miles per hour into the enemy base. I suppose you could create a new game mode called 'speed', so that the mappers can create maps which cater to that particular gamer (then admins can drop one or two in the map list to keep everyone sweet).
Educate the server admins on new maps (and classic maps), new rotations and new game modes. No one wants to play 5 KOTH maps in a row, but 1 in 10 might make a change. If you wanted to create a speed-like server but without the constant re-spawning you could use some careful map selection (smaller, linear maps) to create a similar gaming experience. It might be controversial, but I still think Snipen was the best server admin because he would put on a 'popular' map to get the GT servers populated, then the next map would be more obscure, or new, and that way everyone got used to playing a wide variety of different maps... then he'd viewgib you and temp ban you for an hour.
I agree with you Jitspoe, regarding the jails on every map. In those rare moments where I've actually thought about mapping again I always incorporate a jail into my design to keep people interested (and to stop recon :D). I've also thought about stretching the limits of the game play by using the game modes in novel ways, but I just cannot be bothered to build the maps when I know that people will never play them.
I suppose you have to make a decision about the type of community you want - we used to be small, every player knew each other even across the pond. Now you've got significantly more players, but you've lost that community; I think there are fewer matches now than there were with a smaller number of clans/players.
If I thought people would populate the servers then I'd fund a couple of Pubs and Match servers with 'classic' settings and good map variety, but I don't think people would be interested. We'd tossed around the idea of setting up a DP Olympics (I think this has been done on a small scale) with different countries competing against each other in a range of game modes, but I think the logistics would be difficult to manage. I've also thought about creating a '7 minute' server where the overall game time is quicker and you get to play more maps in one sitting - would this appeal to anyone?

It really depends what map it is. If its a slower map like propaint1 or 2fort5, YES PLEASE. And i also think if its 7 minutes the faster maps would end in this time regardless.

I agree with some of the suggestions here. For me, long spawn times are devastating to a game. Especially if I'm playing on a map I hate. :/ 30 sec should be the max. With 10-15 sec the minimum. As for matches, I'm fine with higher respawn times. Or 1 life per round. Just seems weird any other way. I would love spawn protection. I played a simple map earlier.(that I like a lot) And someone from the other team took it upon their selves to sit at our base and shoot continuously. I don't think speed servers killed DP. And I don't choose a server that way when I want to play.
And I have to agree, I don't really know SuperMAn, but I enjoyed playing on his server. It seemed to have a better variety compared to other servers when I played in my earlier years. And he seemed open to suggestions. So that's always nice.
Personally I don't agree with 10 map max per server. Most of the people in charge seem to like the same maps. Which means there isn't really a variety in the maps. I'm tired of seeing the same couple of maps. Personally I would like to see some of these beta maps finished. There's only like 3 or 4 servers that have people on it. So when it's a map I've gotten sick of playing. I go to empty servers to check out the beta maps.
I don't think learning a map is the problem. If anything maybe a offline tutorial version could made for more popular maps. A tutorial well never be the "be all, end all". I was in a map the other day.(probably a jump map) And someone was asking how to do something. When they were asked if they had done the tutorial they said no.
Also, I love Carpathian. I wasn't very good at it, and probably never will be. But I enjoyed playing it.
I think we need more innovative maps. Some that aren't some random cave. I actually like having the possibility to play on a variety of maps. So I don't bored and used to the same gameplay.
By the way, I enjoy playing PB2 as well as other people multiplayer games like COD. You can't really compare the two. For one thing COD has the power to have random objects you can and can't interact with. As well as the budget to keep implementing that feature.
Almost forgot. More or new sounds would be nice. I always found that funny when I first started playing. And I didn't really mind dying when I heard them. :)

It is true for an part, i never like speedservers for the fact being spawnkilled every 5 seconds i spawn, every server should be standard with 30-40 spawn seconds, speed servers are also annoying for people who just started to play paintball, they get spawnkilled the very first moment they join such an server and quit the game, thinking its something too boring

For me, nothing is worse than waiting 30-40 secs for a chance to play. Only to be spawn killed by some noob that would rather spawn kill the other team instead of capturing the flag. I guess if I had to choose, I'd rather play on a speed server. The lower spawn time means I get more chances to play. Regardless of how many times I die. With a spawn time of 30 seconds to a minute, I'm better off playing my console games. But anything less than 10 seconds is far too short. I'm not much for making a strategy to capture the flag. But 10 seconds is more than enough time to decide not to go the same route again. :/ Not to mention, with longer spawn times. There is the likely possibility that the eliminated players are scouting the map and passing the info to their teammates. Nothing wrong with that. But sometimes the game can get boring quick if it seems like the other team already knows your moves before you make them.

Other people and clans knew you and you talked to eachother. But if I join a speedserver these days, you know noone and noone is talking because you CANT even read anything in the chat. The only spamming is "player 1 killed player 2". It is IMPOSSIBLE to make a conversation with others and tell them for examble about mIRC or whatever.

I think you misunderstood what I was saying. I don't spawn kill unless that person just happens to spawn when I get there. I play for caps not for kills. If your whole goal in the game is to get as many kills as you can. Then you are probably one of those players no one wants to play with. And with a high respawn time. You're probably one of the spawn killers I'm talking about. :/ 70+ is great, and a nice thing to strive for. But if your team still lost is it really worth it?
If you want to talk to someone then talk. You don't need to be super pro for someone to bother to respond to you. From my experience, not all of the better players are pain in the butts. They don't mind talking to you so long as you don't sound like a desperate cry baby. If you can't manage to talk in a speed server then maybe you type too slow. Or your talking more about speed servers with less than 5 second spawn times. From what I could tell now, and when I first started playing. If you're a decent player and you play often, like almost everyday, you will be noticed.
Personally I don't like mIRC. It seems more confusing then it needs to be. Mind you the last time I was on it was like 2009. But if your reason for why we should have 30+ respawn times is so you can talk to your buddies then maybe you should rethink that. It's frustrating to find out that one of your teammates are not playing to their full capacity because they're trying to advertise something in the chat. :/ Most people playing this game probably can't properly run mIRC and Paintball at the same time without problems. And since I recently changed some of my internet crap. It would be suicide for me to even attempt to use another program that requires the internet as well.
All I'm saying is that speed servers aren't the complete problem. Maybe in the next build some sort of spawn protection can be implemented. Because there's only so much a mapper can do to deter spawn killers. As I write each of these posts, there is one specific map that keeps coming to mind. But I can't remember the name of it because I played it years ago. (didn't really like that map either)
Also, sorry for the long post. Seems I'm practically incapable of responding with short posts.

I'm new to the game. I don't like Speedsrvs tho they're full 24/7. I'll play Public but no one is there. If there is someone after 2-3 Minutes they leave and change to Speed because they have 5-6 seconds spawntime after death.
First moment I thought DP is a team-based-game but it isn't. Every1 in the team is jumping around and don't care about playing in a team. I'm talking as a newbie, no pro but if you asked a person to help you with a speed jump, double jump or circle jump they won't and leave srv. Too bad. :(
After some minutes at the Tutorial-Map I learned that this have nothing to do with the reality. Autocoker for example isn't available 1 or 2 times @ a map. After the tutorial i thought it's a good weapon but can't use it and have to take Spider SE.
that's an experience from a newbie ;)
What would make you play more?
Some of you know CS 1.6? Every round you have money and can buy weapons or other crazy stuff for your equipment. I think this were a great idea for DP2. With the opportunity to exclude this from the srv settings - for example @ matchingsrvs

Sorry, but I think your idea wouldn't be good. The good players would get just more money and buy the good guns every round, while the newbies have to kill with the PGP.

In CS 1.6 all the guns are made to be even.. kinda. People use them more as a personal preference not because one is better. Although i do like using carbine better than autococker...

With the match scene coming to a sudden halt, and the pubs becoming less attractive we need something to attract both the newer players and to keep the current players satisfied and WOW them.
I'd still like to also state this mod is going on 15 years this July, How many games from 1998 still get played today? Its amazing how long it has been going for, thanks to jitspoe. I just think this time dp needs something to grab us back in, possibly implied to the new build/builds.

I do agree with most of your opinions. The game has losen around 15% of its fun duo these facts. We maybe can't get these oldskoolers back, but we should actually think of how we should get new players

Not sure what you mean. But that other guy/girl I was talking to assumed that because I don't like being spawn killed on a server with a long respawn, that I automatically spawn kill in return.
Like I said before. If your goal is most kills instead of most captures it's no wonder you can't find anyone to play with. You're only thinking about yourself and not the team. I prefer captures over kills. And as long as I'm not 0/etc. then I'm happy. I'm not sure why what server your on would determine whether you go for captures or kills... :/
In the the next build some type of spawn protection would be nice. Or a penalty for those who spawn kill. Like if they shoot someone that just spawned they die instead.

Very simple, we just need full public server. Most time i want to connect to a pub, they are empty. And speed- or pgpservers aren't much fun. (in my opinion)
Also the matchscene is very boring. There are just a few clans that do matches and it's kinda boring to play against the same teams again and again..

This game needs a decent AI and some settings like in TF2 where if the server drops below a certain number of real players bots will be added. This would solve the empty server problem. I wouldn't mind playing against bots for a few minutes until real people joined. This would open up many possibilities for new game-modes aswell.
Another way to help increase the number of players is to fix the stupid in-game login method. Why can't we just have a "normal" login box when the game starts? Enter your username and password and be done with it. Instead we have to search for the global login settings menu, create a profile, link account to profile, and then enter password. It makes sense to people who have already been doing it for a while, but new players have a hard time with this poorly designed in-game login method. I've seen way too many people asking in #paintball about why they are getting kicked from games. They never stay for more than one minute and I can only assume they just give up on playing the game.

1. I agree with the lack of people playing, but what also has stopped me playing is the communities attitude. It used to be fun to play.
2. Very true; but I doubt admins will like it.
3. Tried, everyone was against it. It's hard enough for new players to get used to one map let alone the 2k+ maps that DP is currently offering.

Well after abit of time sitting a normal pub with normal respawn times maps etc. people usually connect after a little then another person they do this because of two things
1. theres someone on the server
2. or they are sick of another server
if there was a better way to get people into a server that dont know how to use irc and stuff i think it make alot more people on.

I play League of Legends because I can get a competitive game within seconds. The "solo/duo" ranked games, where you're achieving something by winning, or even better team ranked games + setting up scrims with other teams. There's always something competitive. There are also huge tournaments every weekend that any team can enter, and being in a team that has won money from that game it just provides incentive to improve. That's something DP can't grow to, however, but the concept is what would make me play more.
I enjoy competitiveness. It's a long shot to just have the IRC community back and matching daily, that wont happen. So it needs to start with pubs. We need pubs like Superman's Pub active again. Pubs that were actually fun to play in, and you'd enjoy staying 2-3-4-5 maps before getting bored. There was some competition, there were good maps, people spoke english. It was actually possible to recruit some people into your teams. The competitive scene can rebuild itself if we have people who speak english on real servers - so we can recruit. But again, this has been talked about for a while and nothing really can be done about newbies preferring low spawn times.
If somehow we managed to get real pubs played, with good PUB-maps, then stuff like in game IRC-like chat would be cool. But the foundation isn't set for that right now.

A PUG system would be awesome, I know someone hasd one before through IRC but that would be great for me. Kinda like in CS:GO you search for a game and you're put into a queue until 9 other people get matched up and everyone says they're ready.

As a player who has played paintball on and off for a good 5 years, i know that if you cant find anyone to play against (competitively) it gets boring
I know people have been talking about a chat feature, but even if it was something simpler, like on dplogin being able to view whos online/away/offline. What server they're in or maybe even the option to send a direct message (i.e. written or "invite to server" that might appear in the game itself?!??.)
I dont want it to turn into a facebook type thing, but i think maybe the ability to add people as friends (even if not in your clan)
Then eventually if that is successful the possiblity of a separate chat system in the game itself.
Because right now people use skype, irc, facebook etc. all of these methods of chatting. Would be better to have a centralised version longer term.

What this game needs is the following:
1)good TuT(forced) and properly done, the one that exist isn't the best:/
2)In-game chat with friends list this is most likely the best way to keep players in contact with each other. Use player id-common name used
3)better/fixed amount of maps, this will help new players because new players will know the maps better due to repetittion and this will enhance gameplay for everyone because now the new player knows how to play that map, and not have to learn a new map every round, includes the matching scene
4)auto/better stat system, although I started a thread about it, it turned into a flame thread
5)better graphics, this game does need better graphics, because better graphics=looking more new gen therefore attracting new generations players
6)ADVERTISING!!! Use social media, much more effective, and much cheaper
7)distribution of power, this game only consist of one man who has almost absolute power, which maybe a good thing depending on situations but usually not the best way. Jitspoe has to give other individuals power, doesn't mean show all the secrets of the game and ban system that he's so paranoid about, heck you don't even need to show the ban system to anyone. I know there is a thing called committee but nowadays it almost doesn't exist maybe a new and more active committe would help.
8)I am going to say this but I know people are going to say " oh he said that so he can get unbanned" it really does not matter to me, if I want to play this game, trust me I can, plus I pretty sure none of these will come into place. Anyway so #8: better ban system as in a better "ban hammer", the current ban hammer is driving players away rather then punishing, a ban does not mean "GTFO" for this is the wrong definition of a ban. The ban hammer should be doing the following-consistent, no bias, and keep the player in the game and not drive them off. If these are followed then the game shall prosper, if someone gets a ban for 1000+ days and someone else who did the same thing gets the ban for 200+ days, really does more harm then good(consistency is MUCH better which ATM it lacks in the current ban hammer). No bias is once again a better thing, because there have been cases were emotions were taking over then the rules and that did not turn out well, so please keep emotions out of banning process. LoL bans players Acc, which is more valuable to the players and it punishes the players due to the acc's valubility, and it also does not drive the players away/out of the game, sure the player might be pissed of but what if they want to comeback, then they start of fresh and work there way up.

Well the problem with the first one is that it's based on movement and then you get the "pop-up" sign that explains what the player needs to do, do I have to explain why this is problematic? If someone starts the TuT the first thing they do is move around and if they move around to much then the player will get those pop-ups(alot of them), which is really annoying, now to fix this, the best solution would be from COD MW2: the first mission in MW2, it's literally the best tut IMO, the player is forced to stay at one station do everything right and then is allowed to go on further to the next place. Adding audio TuT would help TuT as well. Yes the current TuT is decent but needs improvement for maximum help to a new player.

Sorry cap0ne, but school is a place of education, and knowladge=light. Although I heard that the American education system is excrement. Now to get on topic, dajjal simply means deciever, and that is what most people are under, decisive reality. What version(build) digital paint are you running? You may need to update digital paint: go to Dplogin.com->downloads->update to the newest bulid which should be the first file link.
One more question what is the name of your ISP, because there could have been a change in "routing". "routing" means how the information is traveled to a different server, so in your case it could be that the ISP changed the "routing" and now it takes longer for the information to be sent/received (which is what pings are) to a particular area, server, company, and or IP. The change in routing is usually done to decrease "pings" in a particular area, server, company, and or IP, but done at a cost to other places, which then those places have an increase in "pings". An example of this was done by Telus, an ISP, and people who had Telus had crazy pings, like yours.
There might have been something else that may had happened, the "new modem" maybe is not as powerfull as the "old modem" and therefore less distribution of speed that is provided by the ISP. Or there maybe an update(s) you need to install on your computer. Or you may need to check if some one is using that "Internet speed" (which is the speed provided by the ISP), parents/sibillings that maybe downloading files,etc... Or the ISP is not providing you with the "internet speed" that you ordered for, if you know your "internet speed" then go to www.speedtest.com, this will tell you what speed you are getting. If you dont know your "internet speed" then call your ISP. And if things don't match then tell them that you are not receiving the "Internet speed" that you had signed up for, and therefore your ISP might be breaking the contract. If all else fails, then tell whoever that changed your modem/router to bring back the same router that you had or a new one, and try dpb2

I think one big problem are the overplayed maps. In my opinion maps like shazam or wobluda become boring, after playing it for maybe 3 years or more.
There are alot of nearly unplayed or forgotten maps for public server, but also for the matching scene.
When we pick a unknown map in matches, our enemies says always that this isn't fair. Yes, it isnt easy to play on a map you never saw, but if we continue to play the standart maps, we'll still play them in 20 years.
I know that all overplayed maps are awesome, but there are so many other good maps.
I really enjoy playing on the new QeHs Server, they have 3 popular and 3 unknown maps in their rotation. If we could do something similar to this on every single public server, people could have more fun.

Maps are overplayed because they are good and balanced. They wouldn't be overplayed because they are bad. Other maps have too many flaws, whether it be appearance, or gameplay, to make them not play. It's preference, but overplayed is caused by maps that fit the way the playstyle in this game is.

Another reason that makes asian players quit is actually the really big maps, their PCs ( i guess so) are bad probally 2000 models with the 256 mb ram stuff, thats why shock maps used to be overplayed by asians.

Another reason that makes asian players quit is actually the really big maps, their PCs ( i guess so) are bad probally 2000 models with the 256 mb ram stuff, thats why shock maps used to be overplayed by asians.
I think the engine should be improved to have better performance on big maps. Most modern FPSs can handle huge maps just fine.
