Title: TrenchBroom
Post by: jitspoe on April 18, 2013, 12:04:41 PM
I came across this yesterday.  It's a Quake1 level editor that only has a 3D window and easier to use vertex editing.  I was actually thinking of making an editor like this for Paintball2 (like I'd ever have time to).

I'm curious what some other mappers think of it.

Tried it a few weeks ago, I think it would be a lot easier for new mappers to learn, but I didn't like not having multiple perspectives visible at once and having to change the view quite often to make sure I'd done something right. Have you seen jdolan's in-browser radiant demo?

Yeah, it's kind of interesting to try it out in practice.  In theory some of the ideas I had in my head sounded pretty good, but maybe keeping the 2D views is good for more efficient workflow (while still making it possible to do everything in the 3D window).  The controls are slightly different than what I was planning to do, but the fundamental idea is about the same.  I'll have to play around with it some more.  Unfortunately, it seems to be pretty unstable right now (just like the old editors!).

The Radiant JS is pretty crazy.  Can you do anything other than load maps and look around?

Quark is the best... ftw.

It's just tough changing map making tool when you get used to one over 10 years.

How long have you tried TrenchBroom, and what about Quark do you prefer over TrenchBroom?

Clipz thinks quark is good but after 10 years of mapping he still can't make terrain.

Take it as you will. I'm not a pro mapper like some folks, but a of friends told me about this other day, and I decided to toy around with it a little then:

I'm fairly proficient at bsp, and even so, some of the more awkward parts of bsp are pretty much fixed by this editor. For example, the ability to just just drag to create some odd shaped terrain instead of using all clipping plains made the process insanely fast. The 2d windows in bsp are nice for laying the map out and getting a feel for where you want things. But a finished map seems like it could be plugged out of trenchboom in a fraction of the time, and with better aesthetics.

Is trenchboom more like google sketchup? Cause I DESPISE google sketchup and all of its inconvieniences.

I have not used Sketchup, so I can't say.  I am curious what you dislike about it, though.  A lot of people seem to like it.

Google sketchup, ugh. I guess it's relatively easy to use, but after using BSP for so long, you find so many flaws on sketchup, like the fact that there's no grid, and you pretty much can't move stuff once you've placed it, and it's difficult to determine exactly where you're putting stuff, etc, etc, I could go on and on.

A guy over at the quake cafe made a quake 2 addon for trenchboom. Good alternative to play around with if anyone is interested. Here's the link.

Ah man Necros is an amazing mapper. Alter of storms is probably one of the best things to ever be made for quake.
