Title: To the Gentleman that deleted the Wiki...
Post by: KnacK on August 07, 2006, 01:32:43 PM
Well, I sure as hell hope you feel like more of a man for deleting an open wiki: a wiki that was kept open and unlocked for the entire dp community.

I can't even call you a hacker or a script kiddie, just an idiot.

Did it make you feel good?  jsut a few keystrokes to remove work that wasn't secure? I personally spent hours working on server and client side comamnd as well as put together DT's version of mapping.

To Jit:
I know that you are currently away, but it's time to secure the wiki so this doesn't happen again.

This really is a shame.

This is exactly why I haven't "gone public" with the wiki yet.  It's simply not ready (thus the "testwiki" directory).  Automatic backups were implemented a little while ago, so nothing should be completely lost.  I just have to go through and restore everything.  Unfortunately IP logging was not functioning properly, so I can't identify who vandalized the wiki.  I've fixed it now, so if anybody does this again, we'll be able to identify him.  Unfortunately "securing it" isn't a trivial task or it would have been done a while back.  I'm going to try to tie it into the global login, though.  But that may not be for a little while.

Jitspoe, you can read apache's httpd-access.log, it would be in there, just search it for "POST"s to the wiki.

I don't have access to it.  The wiki is hosted with gamespy.

At the time I started, dpball.com was having issues.  I don't know that it really matters where it's hosted.

This is kinda off-topic, but on wikipedia, Paintball 2 is listed under 'Free First Person Shooters', but there's no entry for it. Some people should make one.

It's being considered for deletion because someone doesn't think the game is well-known enough.

EDIT: Um, cobo, you completely confused the autococker and automag. I'm not a fan of your work.

It started off with a bad name, the game is called digital paint 2 / paintball2 people.

Digital Paint Paintball 2, no colon...the project is a strange resource for the name considering that all of the source isn't exactly on there though.
the game itself is always paintball2 in executable/file names
on planetquaket quake it is always Paintball II, or digitalpaint http://planetquake.gamespy.com/View.php?view=MOTW.Detail&id=49
jits hosts these forums on dpball.com

...jits...what the heck is the name of the game? lol

The name of the game is "Paintball 2".  "Digital Paint" is the development team.  "Digital Paint: Paintball 2" is used to keep in unique.  The colon is optional, but I think it makes it easier to read.

well, there is already a Digital Paint on wikipedia. So i say the name is ok.

If they deleted it, it's probably best to keep it deleted...

That too. I think we need to teach some people the difference between 'Autococker' and 'Automag'.
Also, how to not copy things.

Sigh, there'll always be some sort of excuse to delete it, he didn't leave a reason why though. :/ No point in getting its deletion reviewed, that never works, except if the admin totally screwed up or something, which is rare. Oh well, we'll have to wait it out then make a new article. The thing is, they probably have a deletion log for it, so the title will have to be changed a little so it won't attract attention.

edit: oh, they still think we're advertising and that the game isn't well-known enough to be noted.

Many people play the darned game. Why can't Wikipedia just stop being jerks and let the Wiki page be built?

Because they dont know that, and its usually bots that place the page for deletion.
