Title: Famous Maps
Post by: Fred187 on August 27, 2006, 09:01:36 AM
I just had an idea that I thought might be cool. Why don't we start a chain of maps based on locations from well known films/TV shows? I don't think this would breach copyright laws, would it?
I've been trying to make some maps myself, but struggling quite a lot, I'm have trouble making very simple maps, so I don't think I'd be up for making anything complex. But, if anyone thinks this is a good idea, then please go ahead and make something along those lines. If not, then I'll shut up now.

For some reason, the entire community seemes to think that any good looking map has horrid gameplay. Do my a favor and prove them wrong.

That's not it. It's the 'maps based on locations from well know films/TV shows'. How many tv shows have 'layouts' that will play well?

Also, good looking maps are almost impossible in quake2. :D

Eiii: What are good looking map layouts possible in, and why not Quake2?
I think that crimethink is possibly one of the best map layouts I'd seen in any game. You are talking "layout" right? and not "good looking"?

I'm saying you can't make 'good looking' maps because of the evilness of brush-based editing. Also, it doesn't render efficiently at all compared to games now days, especially if you have lots of little brushes. For an example of a map editor/format I really like, see F.E.A.R.

I see what you're talking about, yeah, F.E.A.R. rocks. Paintball2/Quake II can have good looking maps (my fav is crimethink.bsp), but you are right, they render really bad when there are a lot of brushes. Quake III isn't bad though, the maps always have lots of design and enteties yet still run good.

/me is hinting for Jitspoe to move to the Quake III map format, and/or engine...or to just get dpball to be able to handle intense maps better on both crappy and good computers

1: Too open. Also, too big for the engine (probably).
2: Hmmm. Looks to be okay, but there's more than just recreating that one part. Also, that seems to be more hallway than base.

I'm not talking TV sit-coms. I mean maps designed for fighting. Maybe Die Hard? Gameplay would be alrightish, wouldn't be too easy to do though.
