Title: Quake 2: Standalone Game
Post by: maxpower on October 11, 2006, 07:46:31 PM
I want to make a Terrorist vs Counter-Terrorist type of game pretty much paintball but with guns like M4s and M82A1's. Wondering what i all need. Here is a list of stuff i have: Milkshape, Quake2.net, Quake 2 source, Paintball 2 alpha 16 source. Just to let you know i am running windows 98, but to my surprise alot of new programs work on it, ex: .Net Framework 2, Milkshape, andThe Sims. 450MHz processor, 256 ram, i have internet. And are there any tutorials on what to edit?

The terrorists also need a few other things..

1)  A church to hide in
2)  A burka to disguise themselves as women
3)  Children to hide behind

4) Planes to blow up buildings.

You'll need something to compile the source with.  You might try visual studio express.  I haven't tried it myself, and I've heard it takes some work to get the project set up to compile right with it.  You might want to use the quake3 source instead of quake2, too.  OpenaArena might be a start to get some media, and there are a few different Q3 projects, but I haven't really kept up with them.

You might also want to check out Action Quake2, since it's pretty close to what you describe.  Search for LTKTBM.  mSparks has done a lot with it and made it a standalone game.

Paintball2 requires OpenGL.  The only way to remove that requirement would be to rewrite all of the features that have been added since Quake2 in the software renderer.  Many of which are not possible or would be too slow (not to mention the software renderer is a pain because you have to use assembly unless you want it to be really slow).

ok, but what files are for the menu and stuff. And what file do i edit to add a menu like in-game, just a small window for the radio commands. Like if the palyer hits like f a small transparent menu popsup in the corner with the radio commands.

The menus are stored in pball/menus.  Use the "menu" command to open them.  For example, if you create a menu file called "test.txt" and put it in the menus folder, typing "menu test" would bring it up.  You could simply bind a key to "menu radiocommands" or something.

Gee, sounds exactly like Counter Strike. If you're going to make a game, make it original.

What is your guys problems, games like this are made i know. I am like the FPS shooter master. These games dont present a challenge to me anymore, why do you think i want to make my own, everyone has different ideas so it wont be the same as all of the other games.

I meant single player. I was talking about like Shooters with real guns not paintball guns

Yeah, I'm really good at games too, but only the ones with an easy setting. I should make my own game, because as you can see, I've already mastered all the other ones.
