Title: Songs for me to learn.
Post by: Killswitch on February 23, 2007, 07:01:35 PM
Hey everyone,
I have been playing bass guitar for over 2 years now. And lately I've gotten sort of bored of it.

And I'm asking you guys and gals to suggest to me some songs to learn.

Thanks :)

Motorhead is tha excrement!!  I love listening to that when my friends are out on the lake on his 28' pontoon boat partying our asses off.

Metallica - Anasthesia (Pulling Teeth)

Keep the Faith - Bon Jovi

Chic - Good Times

Maybe you could record some of your stuff and let us listen to it?

Iron Maiden - Phantom of the Opera

I'm not sure, maybe we could make a DPBall band, everyone plays and records, some person puts it all together mixes out time discrepancies etc.
That would be dope. (I've never tried any though)

thanks viciouz

thats a cool idea and all, but it would take alot of time for that one person to mix it all together especially without having input and suggestions from others.
I have a program called Audacity where you can record or inport sounds and can mix them and have them play together and then you can export it as an mp3 file. But as me and my friends found out last weekend its very time consuming and frustrating

If you want to try something completely different than what is played today, go along the lines of what Mr. P is saying.  Try reproducing some late 70's early 80's rips.  I learned playing the base listening to good ol disco.  Lots more bass in songs of that era than there are now, and much more noticable then jsut a background track.  For example, go grab the music for Boogie Oogie Oogie.

Phantom of the opera was first performed by Iron Maiden in '78.

So we're on the same side here.

The difference is, phantom of the opera is
"New Wave Of British Metal", not a phunky disco beat.

No worries.

I leaned to play bass on a fretless Fender.  Had a black music teacher that played a stand up bass.  He introduced me to a lot of various music.  After everything was said and done, he taught me how to play almost all of the typical brass instruments that you see today.

I learned a lot of culture from that man.

Thats awesome,
i want a fretless so bad.

i currently have a squire p-bass and a yorkville 200w 15" Xm200c :)

Hahaha indeed you are so right....  Lotsa good bass in Disco...  Don't tell anybody but when I was in my late teens, early 20s, everyone called me Disco Dougie.  And I don't mean any of that John Travolta crap either.

In my best shinekneez voice, "How you say??? We busta move longtime!!"

Gah those were tha days!

Try to play anything of Dream Theater. If you can do that, your good enough to play everything else.. victor wooten is another great bass player (but he plays jazz) search on youtube for john myung (dream theater) or victor wooten videos :]

If you want some cool bass guitar bands to learn try these:

Black Sabbath
Rush
Exodus
Slayer
Red Hot chili Peppers
System of a Down
Necropolis

All the bands listed above were/are known for there kick a$s, and challenging, bass guitar.

http://www.myspace.com/necropolisatl <---there's some Necropolis tunes for you.
I figured with a name like KillSwitch you may be into Kill Switch Engage so I listed some heavy sh1zzle.

The problem with Money is once you know "the riff" it simply repeats over and over throughout the song. Very little variety beyond that riff.
