This map is still a work in progress and will be for a long while.
I was given this idea by .StaRz.Superman, thanks superman.

Here are some screenshots of it so far.

Now all you have to do is make some sort of sound effect of bombs dropping and tanks. LOL!

Great idea super :P

I hope this map turns out well, so far it is

Oh dear lord, textures. The textures look horrible. This map could be good if it were a bit more detailed, but I have a feeling that no matter how pretty it gets, the attackers will just get slaughtered. If there were some way to get it balanced, that'd be cool, but it might lose the feeling you're going for.

The biggest texture problem I have is the grass-dirt texture. That's meant for a smooth transition between dirt and grass, not to be used tiled. It's also odd to have grass/dirt have sharp edges like the block you have there has.

Post by: nightryder on March 26, 2007, 01:03:12 AM
to balance it maybe make the germans have worse guns and/or no barrels. Also have the germans spawn in the back of the base so the American/Canadians have a little time to get started before the barrage of bullets starts coming.

the textures do look a little off and im sure you'll work with em.i also think there should be some cliffs along the side to make it look a little more like the battle at normandy. maybe watch Saving Private Ryan for a little inspiration ;). I've played a level like this before for a different game and it was pretty fun so i think this will turn out pretty good.

Way back in the day Hump and I worked on a DDay type map.
Actually it was his idea, and he employed me to create the landing crafts.
The way I did it was as follows:
I made a DDay style landing craft. The craft started out to sea a bit in water over your head. At the beginning of the game everyone spawned above the craft. I had to "drop" the players into the boat because being the craft was an entity it had to have a second to become solid or the player would fall right through it right at the start. The entire craft was a func_train that simply started out at sea and went in towards the beach. Next problem was the door swinging down to let the troops out. Unfortunately you can't have a fun_train, and a rotating entity as the same object. To combat this, as soon as the craft came to a stop I continued the swinging door's func_train and shot it down thought the sea floor to make it disappear. When the craft came to a halt there was an identical door already sitting there waiting for it. So with the original door gone down through the sea floor, and the new door in it's place, I could apply a rotation to the new door to make it swing down and open for the troops to come storming out of. The problem was, now you had this door sitting in the middle of the water close to the beach. This could look odd from shore. From inside the craft it looked absolutely perfect. Unless you were REALLY REALLY looking for it, you couldn't even tell the doors were switched as the craft came to a halt. And in that particular map the Germans spawned far enough away from the beach they couldn't see the little door sitting out there alone in the water.

Granted this type of thing take a lot of time and patience to get perfect. And after all that work the map was never released. But that's the price you pay for perfection. It looked pretty darn cool watching it work. At the time I didn't know how to spawn players with gear, or even if it was possible. Gear falling through the boat to the sea floor on spawn was another issue I had to deal with. In the end I got it working perfectly, but it never came to anything.

Good luck with this map. I really hope you go for the animated landing craft approach. That would rock!

Aside from the textures and (lack of) lighting, the other problem this map has is the fact that it's kind of a box floating in space -- the ocean just comes to an abrupt end, as do the sides of the hill.  I can't really think of a good way to remedy this, though.  Quake2 maps really need to be enclosed somehow.  I imagine the r_speeds are going to be really bad, too, and a lot of people's framerates will suffer (especially if reflective water is enabled).

S8N: What happened to that map?

This looks fun to play in. Do the ships actually move forward to the land? That would be cool if they actually did that.
Title: Re: NewMap: DDay Paintball Style
Post by: KiLo on March 27, 2007, 12:55:45 PM
The ships probably don't move (don't know for sure) they are just there for show and an obstacle most likely.

Not trying to be mean but what really is the point of having the ships moving when this is fast paced game. I don't think the ships are going to go 30-35 mph (average for most players I believe) so there really is no point in having them move
Title: Re: NewMap: DDay Paintball Style
Post by: S8NSSON on March 28, 2007, 10:21:48 AM
There is a HUGE point in having them move, and only two points in not having them move.

Let's start with the two points in not having them move; lazy, and don't know how. Good enough?

Good...

Why your boats should move:
You are simulating a real event in a real place at a real time. That being the case, you should attempt to recreate, not only the look of the place, but also the feel, the atmosphere, the ambiance. Starting your offensive players in a few stagnant boxes out in the water may work, but imagine spawning the offensive in a transport ship that actually approaches the shore and has the door swing down releasing everyone inside to move forward and attack the beach head. Imagine your approaching ship being pelted by long range fire from high up on the hill. A few men go down as the door opens and the troops come running out. Bodies laying everywhere, you make it to the first line of cover, look around to see who made it, and initiate your final offensive for the flag. To me, making the boats move, and moreover, making the door operate to release the troops once at the shore, is crucial to making the experience.

Making it work:
In Normandy the allied troops greatly outnumbered the German defensive forces. This won't be the case in your map. In Normandy allied forces had one path, all be it a very wide and steep one. Your map shouldn't have one path.

You may consider making a main central up hill battle area in the middle. On either side would be a set of mountains that contain seaside caves with tunnels leading up to the top without having to run the gauntlet up hill. Timing is everything. Make the tunnels too easy and fast and everyone will use them. You have to make a balance between the two. Go the tunnel route and not be under constant fire, but the route is slower and more bottlenecked at the end and susceptible to "lining" (god I hate that stupid word), or go straight up the middle under a more open constant fire, but be able to reach the flag much faster.

You must also carefully plan where you want to place the defensive line. If you allow the defense to get too close to the beach the offense will never make it off the boats. You may also consider giving the defense the lowest guns, but very large ammo and co2. And give the offensive very high guns, but low ammo and co2. See where I'm getting at here? Defensive forces have worse weapons, but their stockpiles are good. Offensive forces are coming off of transports and not able to carry unlimited supplies. Put some supplies in key, risky, areas on the beach so they can replenish from their fallen comrades.

Good luck with this.
Don't be slack, if you're going to do it go all out and do it right.
If done correctly this could be a nice map.

I also have plans, well let me rephrase that, I have started and failed several time, but still plan to succeed, in making an air siege map where the offensive force air drops out of a plane onto or close by the base to be attacked. One day maybe!

I've never actually tested this, but I think siege actually supports 3 teams, so you could have 2 attacking and 1 defending.

I f so then how come on siege castle or zsiege there aren't three teams scores like on shazam44 (Yeah yeah this is CTF).

Also how would the scoring work with 2 attacking teams.

Because maxteams is set to 2.  I'm not sure how the scoring works.  It has never been tested.

I have changed the map up quite a bit and have added alot more time and detail into it, the map still isnt even close to being half way done but I will post screenshots of what the map looks like along the way.

Here are some new screenshots:

I still have alot more to put into this map and havent even started on the flag base, im just building and detailing the paths up to it. What do you guys/girls think so far?

You grass texture and grass/dirt transition textures are different. The sheilds look weird with the two different types of wood with major color changes. The wall textures is realllllly ugly. Use some sort of cliff/stone texture.

You think I could get the .map and see if i can do some stuff with it?

I don't like the walls, but I don't really know what else you could do, since there's not really a way to simulate an ocean and it looks bad to jush have it abruptly cut off by sky / floating in the void.  One possibility might be to make it look like a scenario field -- like make it look like a real paintball field with various bunkers set up to reproduce a dday scenario.  I saw one field that had tank traps made out of wood, for example, and it looked kind of cool.  It might be hard to pull it off well, though.

Another thing -- get some lighting in there before you take any more screenshots.
Title: Re: NewMap: DDay Paintball Style
Post by: Termin8oR on April 11, 2007, 01:47:53 AM
Thanks for the opinions jitspoe i will take that into concideration for detail and i will do a little more research and make it more rugged and dday like with a hint of DP2.

But here are some screenshots of what I have completed so far. I hope you guys like it.

The dirt parts of the map are trenchs for players to hide from spray and to take cover. I will incorperate more DP2 objects to make it more playagble and not so open but i wont make it cramped.

What are your guys' thoughts so far?

i think there should be some sort of high path along the walls like a cliff thats quick but dangerous. that way once you grab flag there is more than the one main way to retreat back to the cap area.
