Title: My textures have errors?
Post by: Nitroboy on April 11, 2007, 07:58:35 PM
When I make a texture and use it in .bsp editor, then export the map it says ******ERROR******* line <what ever number, i forgot> is incomplete.

Here are some of the textures I was using with help from stigma:

These textures were just part of my testing.

Out of curiosity what is this texture being used for.

Their for use in my map conq, remember that map? I redid everything in it.

These however are just for testing to see if I can actually get them to work.

Is it just me, or is the first texture kinda missaligned? The lines are not horizontal.

Yes, they are not horizontal.

Yes, they are missaligned but these are only my test textures before I start using ones that im actually going to use.

I really don't know why my camera takes it like this, I think it might be the perspective. I will probaly photoshop the middle of the first texture since it looks pretty striaght.

You need to find the appropriate zoom (hopefully your camera uses optical zoom and not digital) to get the lines straight.

As for the error, it sounds like something got screwed up in your .map file.  I'd suggest opening it up in wordpad (or a similar text editor) and look at the line number mentioned).  Another possible cause is a texture name that is too long or contains invalid characters (spaces, commas, etc. could cause issues.  Stick with letters and numbers.)

(or a similar text editor)

Notepad++ (http://sourceforge.net/projects/notepad-plus/) :D

Here is what the line looks like on notepad:

( -2080 1472 496 ) ( -2080 1472 1072 ) ( 2016 1472 1072 ) my textures/wood1 0 0 0 1.0 1.0

Could it be the name of my textures file? I'll try it out and see what happends.

Edit: I got everything to work now but my textures look horrible in the game.

You need to palette them. OR, not save them as .wals.

What format is it in? .wal, .pcx, .jpg,  or .tga? .pcx and .wal need a palette with them (not too sure how that one works out) but Jpegs and Targas don't use/need a palette.

I really don't know why my camera takes it like this, I think it might be the perspective. I will probaly photoshop the middle of the first texture since it looks pretty striaght.

The curve is just because of the lens...  To fix that just do:
Filter | Distort | Lens Correction

But your pic still isn't straight, so next time just lens correct then crop and wahlah.

Cheers,

You need a .wal for BSP, but you want to use a jpeg like eiii said.

I don't get what you mean. So, I just put the picture in the bsp texture file?

Ok, for the game itself you would need to make a folder in "\pball\textures". Lets call it "thetextures" (I would thing of a better name, but I'm a little tired). Then you would put your textures in there. Which textures, or rather what format? The Jpegs or Targas (PCX too, but dont use those) go into this folder.

For the editor you need to 'make' a new texture. And by make I mean open up the texture that will be used in-game and copy it. Then go over to wally and hit "Ctrl+V". Select Quake II from the list in the box that pops up and hit "Ok" (that button might say something else). Now, chances are your texture is not the right size (wally screws this up in pasting for some reason), so to fix this select "Adjust Canvas Size" in the "Image" menu. When the box comes up, hit "Auto 16" then "Ok". After this you save the .wal file. "But it looks terrible" you say. Thats ok, only you are gonna see it in BSP. Now, close out of wally and find that file that you just saved and cut and paste it into a new folder called "thetextures" (same as above) in the "C:\bsp\pball2\quake2\pball\textures" directory.

To use the textures in the editor, hit "L" and the "Load Textures..." box will come up. From the drop down menu, select "thetextures" and hit "Ok".

I hope that answered your question.

I'm tired also, and I have to fly out in a few, but isn't that just the same as making .Wals and loading them, like I do now? I guess I thought I saw earlier you could do it another way.

Thanks Zorch

I'm sure there is another way, but that's the way that I do it.
