Title: DPMapRelease
Post by: ViciouZ on May 15, 2007, 01:19:26 PM
This is the beta of a new tool I've made. It will guide you through a simple map release. It asks for map name, game modes, short description, screenshots, comments, and a .bsp file. Then it uploads the bsp file and screenshots to ch1ll's ftp space (see the dpget hosting request thread) and generates a post, and opens the start new thread page of the mapping forum. What follows is a post generated with the tool.

Map Name: chambord
Game modes: CTF/DM
Short Description: test
Screenshots:
Comments: test
Download it at: http://www.ch1ll.de/dp/chambord_beta.bsp

At the moment, the limitations include only a fixed number of screenshots available (4) and no automatic posting.

Please post feedback and suggestions. The file is attatched below.

any chance to resize the screenshots?

images need to be resized, like 800x600 maybe?

That's my fault. In version 0.3 you can expect it.

Whoa, this is really cool!
I noticed your using the ch1ll domain, who donated the server space? (So that I may personally thank them)

Cheers and as usual, phenomenal work!

Matze donated it. Smokey also helped me, by donating some space for DPPut.

Not sure if this would be possible, but it would be cool if the program actually verified the BSP file (checked for lighting, leaks, proper gamemode settings, etc.)

I guess the program could use the compilers that come with BSP so you only need to supply the map file.

That's probably not a good idea.  A lot of times you need to use advanced settings on the compilers, and the process can take hours.  Plus it still won't be able to tell if the map successfully compiled or not.

You mean just to eliminate yucky maps being posted?

I doubt it would eliminate yucky maps from being posted, but it would potentially make mappers aware that their map isn't complete.

Since he isn't doing it, here's my 800x600 screenshots version.

Since he isn't doing it, here's my 800x600 screenshots version.

1. Modifying and re-releasing his software may be breaking his terms.  You should always ask permission
2. It's not that he isn't doing it, he's 14 and lives in the UK where it's almost 2 a.m. right now, so he's probably asleep.  And knowing Vic he'll probably crank out another build with more options, features etc. tomorrow afternoon.

1. There really weren't any terms.
2. Just because he's asleep doesn't mean he's doing it. ;) Anyway, it's not like my addition/change made it any tougher to add anything.

Yeah, but this does:

So? I can do it first, and it's a really simple thing. That doesn't really cause any harm, does it? :P

I think it's completely wrong.
It's not your code, and you don't have permission.
How rude, how completely rude of you.

Forgive me for trying to make a small improvement that was specifically requested. Christ.

Eiii nobody jumped your case, I merely recommend you check with him first... If you're not going to CYOA, fine by me.
And my second comment was that you said he wasn't going to, and he was going to. End of story.

You're a nice guy, I like you, I just think you should run it by him first.

I didn't say he wasn't going to- I said he isn't. As you pointed out, he's probably asleep. I'm not. Why shouldn't I do it? It literally was about 20 characters repeated 3 times.

It's fine by me, go ahead-ViciouZ is a pretty cool guy I'm sure he won't care.  It's the principle of it though.

Let's say instead of DPMapRelease it was another program, say.. the Digital Paint 2 engine.
Sure you have the source-Jitspoe releases it, and Jitspoe has a laundry listof features to add, so why not just add a few lines of code, and release it on the forum as DP2-eiii.zip?
I'm betting Jitspoe wouldn't be real happy with it.
The same goes for all software, it's not that you shouldn't modify the original developers stuff without the proper license or expressed consent, but you shouldn't release it.  Especially on the same platform it was originally released on.  It can quickly cause shards, which kill projects.

But it doesn't even have a chance of causing a shard or breakoff or whatever- I just changed the [img] tags to [img width=800 height=600]. And a huge compiled project like DP would be a different matter- this is a plaintext batch file.

Ok, it was fine with me, but do you really not have the patience to wait a day? It's not like it's a major piece of software, is it? Anyway, working on 0.3.

I know you paid the developer of Download.exe to allow you to use it with DPGet, but will he allow you to use it in DPMapRelease?  The reason I ask is because I've grown akin to the easy software update.

Good news. Now Matze and Smokey have lent me FTP space, I can use the inbuilt FTP client to check for updates without using FTP. I'll implement that in 0.4, like I did with DPGet.
I'm also working on the Community Edition of Build 18. I need testers, so if anyone can help, PM me.

PS: 200 posts WOO!

edit: y00tz get yo ass on MSN.

edit2: Here is 0.3. Pretty basic, just added labels, fixed a miniscule bug and added the tags.

Grats on 200 posts ( I just 300 last night)
I had no idea you were the developer of DP2:CE.  I'd love to test build 18, I'll get with you on MSN.
If upload a map with the same name does it replace it? I don't want to waste your bandwidth/space by trying it until I have a completed map.
