I just got Ubuntu 7.04 (desktop) installed on my old machine finally (stupid CD-Rom drive) and I put paintball on it. But it doesn't run. I tried both the full and minimal server versions, but the error message was the same:
nick@ubuntu:~$ /home/nick/paintball2b18_min/paintball2
Paintball 2 -- Version 2.0
Illegal instruction (core dumped)
I got this message before when I tried it with a LiveCD, and thought that it was because I wasn't using a hard drive installed version of Linux. Can someone help me out? Thanks.
-
I wonder if this is the same problem This guy is having (http://dplogin.com/forums/index.php?topic=6407.0) he didn't list an error though.
-
But I'm not using KDE. I'm using Gnome. Or would that even matter?
-
Wait for tinman to come by, he's a linux genius.
-
try the non-min build yet?
-
I tried both the full and minimal server versions, but the error message was the same:
O.o
-
XD
Try going into the directory and running it?
cd /home/nick/paintball2b18_min/
./paintball2
and try adding some server config for it to execute after that just for kicks?
If that doesn't work then ask Jitspoe for a debug build of b18.
-
If you're using the min server build, you need to be running it in dedicated mode. You also need to run it from the paintball2 directory.
-
Still gives me the same error message:
nick@ubuntu:~$ cd /home/nick/paintball2b18_min
nick@ubuntu:~/paintball2b18_min$ ./paintball2 +set dedicated 1
Paintball 2 -- Version 2.0
Illegal instruction (core dumped)

Oh, that, you must have an old CPU that doesn't support mmx or whatever.
-
Poo!
Its a P2 333Mhz.
-
Eek, paintball2 wouldn't have run very well on it anyway. Put the P2 in the gamecube and revive that.
-
P2? I thought they had it by then. Must have been P3.
-
MMX has been around since Pentium.
-
Maybe it was SSE, then.
-
MMX was PI, SSE was PIII...
SSE (Streaming SIMD Extensions, originally called ISSE, Internet Streaming SIMD Extensions) is a SIMD (Single Instruction, Multiple Data) instruction set designed by Intel and introduced in 1999 in their Pentium III series processors as a reply to AMD's 3DNow!
So MMX was 1996, SSE is 1999, it means it's not SSE and the CPU you have supports MMX. :-\
-
I knew i should have kept my other computer off the basement floor. That one would have easily run it (P3 ~600 mhz). And the GameCube was completely fried. One of the plugs in the back was all black and corroded and such.
So I take it pball won't work on my old computer?
-
I'd have to do a special no-sse build.
-
Drat. Well, thanks anyway.
-
Sorry for the revive, but I got build 19 working on my Linux computer. Only it runs at 2 fps (4 tops) in Wine. So would that mean that my P2 processor has SSE support? Or is that just something that Wine is emulating?
-
Wine is not an Emulator! :P
You could try looking up your CPU from the sysinfo report or bios report on what it says it is to see if it has SSE. Try running the native client and comparing it to the windows one in Wine to see any performance differences. If you have 3D acceleration set up then Wine shouldn't drain games much at all, I play Enemy Territory: Quake Wars better in Wine in Linux than it runs on my same computer in Windows XP.
-
Haha, performance differences? Lets just start with the fact that it doesn't even start natively, while it actually runs in Wine.
-
xD Post in the b19 thread with your terminal output.
-
... Ok. Give me an hour or two.
-
Nope still get the same error:
nick@ubuntu:~/Desktop/paintball2$ ./paintball2
Paintball 2 -- Version 2.0
Illegal instruction (core dumped)
-
The way the linux compilers handle floating points and the way the windows compilers handle floating points is different. The best way I could find to make them somewhat consistent was to use SSE. I'm pretty sure the windows executable has a non-sse path, but considering you're only getting 2fps, even if you could get it to run natively on that Linux box, eh... why would you bother? :)
-
eh... why would you bother? :)
Just because. :D
-
Sorry for the revive, but I got it working. I was able to play on an EV1-Alt server today. I had to get nVidia's drivers. They where under the "Restricted" category, so I guess I forgot to enable them.
However, I still cannot get it to run natively, only through wine.
