I've heard blender is good.  I tend to use wings3d, though.

Blender is hard to learn, but definitely worth it. Not that I'm good at modeling at all, it's just very fast and easy to use (once you learn).

Yeah, I've been trying with learning with blender, its pretty hard. You'll spend most of your time trying to find a way to do something, but once you start finding stuff, you'll go faster.

This is from my "3D Freeware" folder on my start menu.

-Blender (http://www.blender.org/features-gallery/gallery/images/)
-Art of Illusion (http://aoi.sourceforge.net/screenshots) (?)
-Maya PLE (http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/index?siteID=123112&id=7639525)
-Misfit Model 3D (http://www.misfitcode.com/misfitmodel3d/screenshots.html) (Very interesting to mess with)
-Wings3D (http://www.wings3d.com/gallery.php)

gmax is also good, but I'm not sure it allows for q2.

Blender is a very good modeler, however the .md2 exporter doesn't work. If someone knows python and has some time on your hands, you could fix that though.

Blender is hard to learn, but definitely worth it. Not that I'm good at modeling at all, it's just very fast and easy to use (once you learn).

This helped me out allot: Blender 3D: Noob to Pro  (http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Blender_3D:_Noob_to_Pro)

no, but there is a third-party SMD export that you can make SKM's from.. in the case of character or weapons for this game.

Disclaimer: That is in no way a reference to modifying content for this game, only the creation of new stuff for this engine.  Don't cheat.. Jesus err umm Jitspoe, is watching.

Hm, blender's md2 exporter works just fine for me.
You just have to do the UV mapping.

So does it or does it not let you export .md2's I'm getting confused lol.
Edit: Congrats on forum moderation y00tz  :D

Thanks Apoc :D

Right now I've been using Wings3D to model and Blender to make SMDs.   I swear it's the best setup I've ever had.  UV Mapping in Wings3D is a simple 3 clicks.

Yeah, Wings3D is like 10x easier than blender, and UV mapping in there is pretty easy too.
I havent messed with SMD tho, I downloaded an SMD exporter for blender but only thing I did with it is export this dummy sample model they had and replace it with the paintball player model. It worked, but the scale was messed up.

I think have the same one it's a block dummy, right?  Yeah, I just scaled it 10x and it looked very proportionate.

Just so ya know Apoc, x.SMD + SKModeler = x.SKM, x.SKP, x.skin, x.h

I wouldn't use it. I don't even think you could easily get something made in Google sketch up in DP.

As far as I can tell, it should be possible, but you need to get SketchUp PRO to export to .3DS, and use Blender to convert that to md2 or SKM. So yeah, it's possible, but why waste the money when you can do the same stuff after a 2 hour tutorial in Wings3d?

Yeah i had Sketch up pro before i found it easy to use. But i want to learn wings. Any chance someone can tell me where that tut is?

There's a 100% chance that Google will.

When I try to open a .3Ds it just says that blender doesn't support that.

You have to import it. Not just 'open it' with blender.

Yup :) also I keep getting an import error I go import .3Ds and I get an error it says to look in the console and the console says no model named struct.

use MilkShape, you can import a lot of formats, including .3ds, without errors

Wings3d must have come along a ways.  It didn't have a uv unwrap tool when I used it.  The modeling part was great, though.  I never spent much time with blender, but it seemed a little more cumbersome to build things with.

Milkshape doesn't handle bone weights (unless they've added that recently).  This doesn't matter for static meshes, but if you ever want to make an animated model, you'll want that (unless you're making a robot with stiff joints).

It has in some ways.  It's still a very basic, low-poly modeling tool .. which is why I love it :D

Ok this is a screeny of all that is in the console.

Install Python.
I remember I also had problems running blender when I first ran it.
