Title: [Feature] Crouch Sliding
Post by: coLa on August 27, 2007, 01:07:10 AM
I think this feature would enhance game play quite a bit. In real life paintball, players run and slide from bunker to bunker. I think this would be a great addition to the game. What do you guys think?

Sounds like fun to me.

Who would vote no? i recently downloaded a game that has this feature and its fun as hell. which is why i thought it would help spice this game up a bit.

Um, so, you are strafeing ith good speed then hit some bind which would make u crouch and since u have good speed you will slide?

Or how exaclty would this work?

I voted yes :D.

A lot more needed for this game than sliding...A LOT!

I voted NO because this feature, although it may be cool, is so far down the list of things to do to DP it isn't even funny.

I would place snap shooting/leaning way before this.
Implementing a feature such as sliding would involve an enormous amount of work. The engine that defines the rules of the slide, the key binding to initiate a slide, and the new character animations and sound to present the slide are some of the things involved.

They have it in quake4, it's pretty neat.

Quote from: http://www.truecarnage.com/quake-4-crouch-sliding-tutorial-r7.htm
In short, the technique is simply to hit and hold the crouch key just before you land from a jump or bounce pad. As you crouch release the forward key for greater speed. You will notice that if you let up on crouch before you run out of momentum you get an updward surge that is basically a strafe jump. You can hold some pretty amazing speed going into turns or corners with nice control as the movie demonstrates.

You can see the article/video here: http://www.truecarnage.com/quake-4-crouch-sliding-tutorial-r7.htm

I never thought to implement crouch sliding in DP, I really think it fits the game alot better than air-control (cpm or warsow style).

Implementing a feature such as sliding would involve an enormous amount of work. The engine that defines the rules of the slide, the key binding to initiate a slide, and the new character animations and sound to present the slide are some of the things involved.

The sound and player animation aren't exactly necessary, not sure if Q4 has either of these specifically for crouch slides.  There is no key to bind, it's just an engine's physics extension to the existing crouch.

This sounds pretty neat, I think this will be one of the few 'radical' ideas that a lot of big names get on board with.

yah no need to bind extra buttons. just gain speed by strafing and hit your crouch bind and slide. depending on how fast you were going thats how far you will slide. they have this feature in Urban Terror. its really fun.

I would place snap shooting/leaning way before this.

i actually think that would be a waste.

Is it anything like when you go down a 45 degree angle slope in this game, and just hit crouch and stop walking, how you keep going? That's implemented in the game, you could possibly use part of the code for that for crouch sliding.

Great Idea btw, + all the way.
CROUCH SLIDE FTW

And for the sound, you could have someone slide something through some gravel to make the sliding noise, it would take at max 5 minutes to get it converted to .wav or the appropriate file type.

What a horrible idea, everyone knows strafe jumping is realistic enough in DP. Any more realistic and it might not be fun.

Post by: lekky on August 28, 2007, 07:49:32 PM
hmm, nice idea. I'm pretty sure most people must have used sliding whilst crouched anyway. I'd love to see it implemented.

EDIT: leaning is horrible. We want to encourage speed and sliding does that, not leaning. (I don't even know what snap shooting means..)
Title: Re: Crouch sliding

this game is way too fast paced for leaning thats for sure.

This will make it possible to go through many windows, wont it? If yes, then it's no good because the mapmaker has designed his map for playing without crouch sliding. You can reach enough areas by strafeing and circle-jumping. No need for other methods.
But i support your creativity. :P

Yes Flame that kind of thing we are talking about. Press a button and you slide like that whilst in motion.
Title: Re: Crouch sliding
Post by: jitspoe on August 29, 2007, 09:13:29 PM
Eh, the game already does this.  You don't instantly lose your momentum when you crouch.  I could make the momentum decrease slower, but a lot of people use crouch as a means to slow down, like when you're trying to land on a small ledge.  With sliding, you'd slide right off your target.  I'm not sure what this really gives you, anyway, besides maybe a mild "neato" effect.  It seems like it would just make the game movement harder to control.

Let's just make every surface ice. It'd be easer and faster than implementing this 'crouch sliding' and probably have about the same effect.

I don't really see a problem with this... as long as you can't start crouching in mid air to exploit old map's windows.
Title: Re: Crouch sliding
Post by: XtremeBain on August 30, 2007, 08:50:24 AM
This isn't going to allow you to jump-crouch through windows (like in half life).  It's not the same thing as the crouch momentum that is already on slopes.  When you press crouch just before landing you maintain full horizontal speed and you can get some additional speed coming out of it.  Watch the video I linked to on the first page of this thread or download the Q4 1.4.2 Multiplayer Demo to see what it's all about.

jitspoe: Are you sure I can modify the PM_ physics and compile the client/server binary without needing to recompile the game binary?  Every time I've tried it just crashes me as soon as I enter my test server (which is running the same binaries in a different folder).
Title: Re: Crouch sliding
Post by: jitspoe on August 30, 2007, 03:21:59 PM
I'm not sure why it crashes.  It should be all in the engine code.  I think the only thing the game code does with crouching is change the view offset.

Title: Croutch Sliding for cover
Post by: wallpainter08 on August 13, 2008, 09:40:03 AM
Do you guys think we should have a croutch slide move?  I have seen it in many games and it proved very useful from getting cover to cover.

Ex. If you press shift and "up" you will slide forward

I personally think it might be good.
Anyone else have any ideas on the subject?

Edited: Rolling is know not part of this thread

I just thought it would be good to make it harder for people to line you in maps like shock.

And in "real" paintball, which I know DP is not, sliding is a key part of grabbing cover and moving forward.

OK its not like were doing my above plan ^^^^ where sliding.

For all those who are wondering, sliding is "realistic." Therefore it is not a valid excuse why we shouldn't have it.  Also we all play with double jumping and strafing. If for all you who says its unrealistic I have actually seen people slide.   I have never seen someone jump 20 feet and then fly over pits by "strafing" in real life.   Therefore do not comment that it is unrealistic. If you have other reasons then post them thats why its a topic.

I played real paintball the other day, and they had a merry rule where you are not alloweto shoot from 3m as it hurt too much and can do serious damage. Therefore, when I came face-to-face with the other team, the marshall stopped us from shooting. He then gave us 3 seconds before we were allowed to shoot again. I was crouching at the time and had to SLIDE FOR COVER. Crouch sliding is realistic and would really help those friggin liners. Also, it would need to be limited to once every 3 seconds or so.

Would ruin old maps anyways because you could crouch slide while you were jumping of a ramp at the last second and get through small windows etc where you're not supposed to.

Urban Terror style crouch sliding would be possible, but while it would make some things easier (moving quickly into a firefight while keeping a low profile), it would make other things harder (crouching after jumping onto a ledge to prevent slipping off).

well u could jus set a walk bind which is in dp and use that to stop fast i do this when i do play urban terror and when dp jumping AND YES KNACK AND THE REST OF U DP IS NOT A JUMP MOD!!!

Best engine ever.

But we have that. In WOD =(anygun) + Tarzan HOOK.

Have push enemy and pull enemy.

Have traps, something sorely needed in this mod.

All I want is to be owned on differnet levels of this game.

Title: Re: [Feature] Crouch Sliding
Post by: jitspoe on January 01, 2012, 04:18:31 PM
I went ahead and took a stab at this since I was already in the physics code, and it wasn't too difficult to add.  Basically, I just made it so if you're pressing crouch and moving faster than a certain speed, the friction is significantly lower.

The most difficult part was fixing the extreme wobble (happens currently if you crouch-slide on ice really fast).  I think that was a necessary overall change, so even if crouch sliding doesn't get used, that change is good.

It's a bit weird on hills and steps.  I disabled stepping (well, capped it at 5 units, so you can still make it over tiny bumps) while crouch sliding so you don't skid up stairs at 100mph -- that just looks weird.  There's not much I can do about ramps.  I did fix a bug where it was possible to crouch while in the air, though, so you can't fling yourself across the map in the crouched position.  I allow the player to stay crouched briefly when moving through the air slowly, so crouching down stairs and slopes doesn't keep bouncing you up and down, but past a certain velocity he stands back up.

I fixed the issue I was concerned about (using crouch to slow down) by only crouch sliding if you're pressing the movement keys in the general direction of the slide.  If you stop or hold back, it uses the old friction.

It doesn't change a whole lot -- I don't think it's going to make or break anything.  It does feel a little smoother when you land crouched and don't come to an abrupt stop.  I'll try to post a demo later.  I currently have it disabled by default (sv_crouchslide is the cvar name right now).
