I am pleased to announce a new service available to the community courtesy of your friends in eR33t. Blitz, BoB and myself are working on a few server and competition-related initiatives and have setup shop in #eR33t-Gaming for the time being. The servers are being hosted out of Dallas, TX on a power-house of a server. An example IP is 74.86.179.248:27911.
We're not quite ready for launch, but we do have a few match servers up and running to test the settings and identify any performance issues. If you'd like to use our match servers now you can say !match in #eR33t-Gaming to get a server. The match config right now is reasonable (obsblackout, classic flag settings, guntemp off, login enforced, B19 client enforced, impact and grenade ffire off, elim 60, etc.) and it's sync'd with all the maps at http://dplogin.com/files/maps. A web-based server request tool will be added later allowing players to customize most server settings. If you encounter any problems, please send me a PM on IRC and I'll be sure to check on it in the evenings.
For the moment our public servers are on hold while we optimize our new server environment and have established a website. Expect a more formal launch from us in the coming weeks.

I look forward to it Bain.

Er33t servers again? Cool.

eR33t*
I dont really care about NA servers but if you are going to organize any cups dont forget about the germans. :)
-
Thanks XBain and eR33t. How many servers are you looking to have up?
-
I can answer this I think. If I am not mistaken right now there are 4 match servers up and the pubs are on there way although I am not sure how many there will be.

Europeans* (Responding to magalhaes)
having to play on german servers that probably engendered a euro team getting to the finals.
Yeah, they were a terrible team of course.
Scheduling, as well as server location is such an issue. If there is a way to satisfy all areas of this community i'm sure you will find that way, otherwise good luck with it all.
On a side-note, the first PBCup [QeHs] entered was my most-favourite memory of playing this game :)

they don't have experience playing with [...] packet loss.
we do have experience with packet loss.

i'm behind. And as you see not every german got a 20 ping on german servers. But i think it's fair if a match is splitted onto american and european servers.

With the hardware we have right now, I'd say that we could easily run 20 full 12-player servers. It really comes down to demand though. If we're finding that we only need 4 match servers and one public server, then that's all we'll run. If match servers are filling up at peak hours, then we'll expand to 6 or 8. If people need to start hammering our public server for a slot, maybe we'll open up a second server.
We opted to go with better hardware so that we can afford to run services on the same system with little effect on the performance of the PB2 servers. Our PB2 servers are sliced into their own environment which gives them exclusive rights to the operating system, filesystem, network link, memory, etc.. This is good for a couple reasons. First it gives us the ability to reallocate disk space, memory and processors with very little effort if the PB2 servers ever need it. Secondly, it's a not sharing any of these resources with the other services and processes running along side of it. When we were doing intensive stats parsing on the original eR33t servers (2 full 12-16 player servers simultaneous for 90% of the NA afternoon and evening), everyone would get a 4-5s lag spike every 20 minutes on the :00 :20 and :40. These sorts of problems are going to be prevented since the environment for the servers isn't sharing memory/cpu with the webserver.
With it's own isolated operating system, we can really begin optimizing different areas of the stack to yield better performance for the game servers and not having to worry about any additional services.
I don't want to turn this entire thread into another PBCup discussion, but I feel that we cannot have NA/EU teams consolidated into one big event. I spent a lot of time out of position and trying to satisfy the basic needs of EU teams in the PBCup last year. With that experience, I have a couple better ideas now of how to run a NA/EU league, but I think it would be far easier to run two seperate leagues. That being said and depending on how things go in the next couple weeks, I wouldn't mind collaborating with the Europaint guys to come up with a format that could see the top team from continent to face off in a World Championships match to end off a season.

TEXAS FTW!1!1 looking forward to the 30ish ping. :)

I think it's great that eR33t is putting up those servers and all that is coming with it (I wish I had those resources :P), and I agree that it would probably better if there were split divisions. However, many feel that it is a greater challenge to play experienced american clans than playing those newer european clans, be it for the different choice of maps or actually the difficulty to win a map with the ping handicap.
One question remains for me: is this going together with the WSOP idea of Blitz or are you planning on a new league-like event (or both)?

:o :o :o (triple take)
Well it's aboot time!!!
So what happens to 20ID? It woudl seem logical to have the same clan name as server. (Curious)
Any server rules?
Best wishes.
-
how much are you paying for the servers. thx by the way whos paying for them

Unfortunately our server sponsor does have template installations for DP:PB2 or Q2, so they're unable to provide servers. Since these servers are going to be funded by former-eR33t members and not by our team, then we'll use our eR33t branding on the servers.

There will be some rules for when we open the doors to the pub servers. Right now servers are being acquired through IRC so we can control who's getting a server and who's not a little better. Generally there aren't many complaints from match servers.
-
From a European standpoint, servers are spot-on.
-
Well done.
-
Mmm 31 ping, nice job XtremeBain, BoB, and Blitz.
-
62 one of the top on my list great job.
-
Open pub servers for siege maps and maybe for other gametypes too :P.

Nicely done, I ping about the same as on GT´s (180ish), almost no lag for now. Also I saw that there aren´t some awfull maps constantly used in matches.
-
The maps played on the match servers are dependent on what the clan wants not what we want.
The pubs will have good maps playing that support a wide variety of maps that support all playing types.
-
Ok. I was in one of these servers the other day for a match and nothing on the scoreboard showed up for any of us. I was also the ping would be better than 110 if i ping 60 in a GT?
-
What?
-
I was also [wondering if] the ping [should] be better than 110 [since I] ping 60 [on] a GT [server.]
-
You guys should help other server owners to disable the ability to change sky ;]
Thanks darkness, I think so too, that was a good idea!!!!
-
LMFAO I just reread my post. Thx y00ts, but yea i ping the same in a german server. Is that just a false ping reading on the server browser?
-
so what on these servers you cant change sky.
I havent been on one. but I think disabling that feature would cause people to not match on the server. Since ev eryone is lookin for some type of advantage, they wil go to GT servers.
I jus woke up, I will revise my post later.
What do I know.
-
it's actually not that big of a deal. gl_brightness <number> helps out

What difference does it make, if everyone does it the advantage is cancelled out.

No a grapple hook and some paint shields would do that.
