Not much to really explain here- I start up the game and log in to the DPlogin system.  Then when I join a server, I either get booted (if the server requires a DPlogin account), or my name changed to "noname".

DPLogin validates fine- I'll get the "bad password" error if I use a bad password.  It just doesn't seem to be maintaining my session.

Any configuration I should check?  I know Ubuntu doesn't do a very good job setting itself up.

Seriously, STAY OFF THE BUILD 15 TEST SERVER.  The admins there are completely corrupt.  I got banned for 1) Kicking their ass, and 2) Switching teams to make things fair.

Server Discussion / The sad sad state of DP's servers
« on: November 21, 2004, 07:24:58 AM »
This seems to be my yearly rant on the subject.

Was playing on Apex recently, which seems to be the main place to play DP these days.

Was having a nice fun game on KOTH (albiet with "caps end round" rules ON, which is trash and should be removed from the game because that rule sucks).  Then Dye32 comes in.  Admittedly I thought he wasn't such a n00b, guess my opinion about him was wrong though.  He says he's changing the map because KOTH sucks.

Of course I point out that KOTH is a decent map and it would more than likely be changed to something worse.

I say "if you're changing it, change it to Midnight".

He responds, "Midnight sux"

"Midnight sux?"  MIDNIGHT SUX?  IF YOU DISLIKE MIDNIGHT, YOU'RE AN IDIOT, PLAIN AND SIMPLE, BECAUSE YOU CAN"T GRASP THE CONCEPT OF A MAP THAT HAS TWO PATHS.  GET THE intercourse OUT OF MY GAME YOU meddling 13-YEAR OLD intercourseTARD YOU'RE RUINING IT BECAUSE YOUR PURGING IT OF THE meddling GOOD CLASSIC MAPS LIKE MIDNIGHT

He switches the map to Icewar.  ICEWAR.  Godawful map.

Jit, please please PLEASE remove the ability for admins to change maps (and even for rcon to change maps).  The responsibility is clearly beyond what these morons can handle.

...Icewar?  Come on.

I sorta disagree with the name "Survival"; I ran two Survival tournaments in the past (and possible intent to run ones in the future exist).

You can already do transparencies in textures.

One of the colors in the palette (forget which one) + Trans33/66/both = transparency.

It's been a standard feature in Quake 2.

Look in the Quake2 tutorials at gamedesign.net for full documentation on it.

Paintball 2 Discussion / Re: Dead-Man Recon

I vote for KEEP IT THE WAY it is.  Remember my main suggestion when you took up the project- keep the overall gameplay the same.

Here's my take.  You say that dead recon eliminates strategy for the game- THE GAME HAS NO STRATEGY TO BEGIN WITH.  Jumping around at 600mph  and holding down the mouse button is what eliminated strategy, not dead recon.

Bugs, Feature Requests, and Feedback / Re: MP3 support?
« on: August 26, 2003, 09:17:20 AM »
It used a DDE-type thing that Winamp has.  I had to use a hacky method to determine round changes-- it basically hijacked the centerprint function and looked for messages that said "New round starting in 2 seconds".  So it wouldn't work if it were lagged.

I actually made a little Q2 exe mod that controlled winamp through the console.

It had an added feature that changed the song between rounds-- load your playlist with good background game music and it worked VERY well with DP.

Unfortunately this exe was lost in the great HD format of 2003.

I can see fine in Sandtrap.  Turn your gamma up.

If the game is noticably choppy at 60fps, then it's not actually running at 60fps.  Try using cl_cmdrate 60 or 90 to smooth things out.

I know that my highly anticipated map "Dear God-- It's a friggin' maze" has been in development longer than expected.  But fear not!  It is coming soon.

In the meantime, here's a screenshot of what excitement you can expect from it.  ENJOY!

Paintball 2 Discussion / The offical ALPHA 3 BUG topic!
« on: June 12, 2003, 10:09:39 AM »
PLEASE restrict posts in this topic to bug reports or possible solutions.

So far these are the current issues with alpha 3 that I've encountered.

- The game runs choppy.  With vsync off, cl_drawfps still reports that I'm getting ~200fps.  However, the game runs choppy and feels more like 15-20fps.  I've talked to others who also have this problem, so I'm not alone here.  cl_locknetfps was suggested, but did not help.  This problem occurs with both vsync off and on.

SOLUTION: Increase the value of your cl_cmdrate cvar (to around 200 or 300 worked for me.  The game will run smoothly again (Thanks Bain).

- The hud is all funky-looking, and many of the numbers don't show up.  The numbers that seemingly don't show up are 0-5 and 8.  vid_restart was suggested, and actually made things worse.  Blurring out most of the pictures on the HUD.  This could possibly be another bug.

UPDATE: It turns out that this only happens on a server (at least in my case).  When playing locally, I get all the numbers on the HUD.  Weird.

Screenshot of the HUD:
Before vid_restart (I have 98 ammo):

After vid_restart:

- Last bug... FIX THE darn FORUMS!  I'm tired of staring at a white background and a bunch of red X's!

Did you decompile this map?  If so, that's probably why it's slow.  Decompiled maps usually end up really slow and ugly...

Well the "ugly" part's definitely there.
That map is godawful.

Seriously, twin towers is textured better.

CURRENT TALLY

24-1 for removal of impact grenades.

I think this poll represents an accurate sample of the entire DP community and thus the poll is closed.

Impact grenades

A) They're lame!  They're cheap!  They take away the last element of skill the game has!  Get rid of them!
B) I'm a stupid donkey and I like impact grenades.  Keep them.

I vote A.

ps:  Jitspoe... where the hell is the HTML formatting?

Paintball Deathmatch I crashes with v2.0, with ref_pbgl.dll.

Though I have yet to test it with other Deathmatch maps, I think it's a Deathmatch bug and not a map bug.  Furthermore, I think it has to do with the spawning of players-- how the spawn effects only appear in DM mode (I think).

Most people reporting the crash had nvidia cards, although one had a voodoo3.

The fix:
Not sure if this works, but I told 3 people to try this and none of them crashed afterwards.

En consola:
gl_ext_multitexture 0
vid_restart

This should stop the crash.  Just remember to reset gl_ext_multitexture to 1 and vid_restart afterwards-- turning multitexture off makes other maps crash :P

IDEA!  Wow, this just popped in my head randomly when you asked.

Maybe a little tiny graphic that shows how many are alive on your team, either by number or by little bars or something.  So when you're playing and in a weird situation, you don't have to hit F1 to find out?  *shrug*

You're joking, right? :)

Paintball 2 Discussion / Re: DP League
« on: January 16, 2003, 09:41:53 PM »
The way I see it, clan mode should work as follows:

Up to four clans can be set up on the server, each with a password.

A "clan" would consist of a name, abbreviation, captain, and password (so the cvars would be like clan1_name, clan1_abbrev, clan1_password...).  Players would join a "clan" on a server using a command (either "join" or "joinclan").  The captain would choose the teams, and give the "ready" signal.

This way, a server can remain open to observers to watch the match (observer talk could be disabled to players).

The abbreviation would be used as a file id system-- skin support should be enabled if a clan wants to use a different skin than what their color is.  Other files can also by identified (maybe like a team banner instead of the color splat in the score list).  So if a clan's abbreviation was "Marines", their skin would be "Marines_skin.jpg" and their banner would be "Marines_banner.jpg".

What about a compromise?

Each team plays each other twice in the main "season" of the league.  First round the maps are either A) given to the teams B) choses by the teams from a list.

The second time the team matches each other they choose the maps.
