Yupp, everything seems nice and dandy. About the root problem, could be that this distro (ubuntu) has some automatic checks if you run programs as root (which generally is a bad idea). Would be good if you could verify this on your system (Is Sad still around?) and make a pointer in the faq / docs.

Edit: Are you familiar with gdb?  If you type "gdb paintball2" then "run +set dedicated 1 +exec server.cfg +map midnight" then (after it crashes) type "up" a few times, it should tell you what function it crashed in.

Nope, but a wild guess would be gnu debug or something?

@painkE
Don't do the misstake I did and try to run the game as root, wont start .. think I issued ./paintball --help or something and it told me big no no.

@jitspoe
Maybe you could add a function that if you try to run the game as root with all the arguments it would tell you it's not allowed.

I've reread my reply and I admit it's a bit fuzzy. It did work when I ran it as a normal user .. so I dont think anything were wrong with the software :)

.. yeah .. but as my momma never taught me not to run things as root  ::) ... But that was after I ended up upgrading it to release 19.

I'm going to revert back to release 18 to see if there were any problems or if it was me ..  :-[

Bug: Starting paintball2 with ./paintball2 gives segmentation fault

OS: Ubuntu Linux 6.10 (2.6.17-10-server)
HW: VMware ESX 3.01

Any ideas? It's been a while (v1.6x) since I ran a dp2 server in Linux. Lots have changed, is there any new docs to read?

Wipe the dp installation and re-ínstall it.

Try with v1.65_linux-i386.tar.gz (worked back on RH 5.2), test the server, if it seems to work, then move on to the latest ver.
(Follow XB's post.)

Completed Maps / Re: TheEdge - Finaly finished

Hm, I usually dont jude a map before I played it, but it seems to be a bit foggy. On the other hand, that might just be the idea.

I just come up with a cool idea, I dont add any gameplay value.
I would be cool if it was possible to change the big sign i sshot6 into a realtime scoreboard, just as a neat detail.

1. +set dedicated 1 +game pball +exec server.cfg (+map crates)
2. add map <mapname> or add +map <mapname> on cmd line
3. ? use rcon ?
4. ? pass
5. ? pass
6. ? pass

About the linuxpart. I run it under RH with no problem (v1.7x). Check out this thread
If that wont help you, check with Sad, he runs Debian. (Last time I checked)

i agree with what was first sait, and what was just said
to fix what you just said, jit, TAKE OUT ALL THE SMALL MAPS!!!

Why would you take out small maps? Ever played 2vs2 or even 1vs1 ?
Last time I checked (been a while though) there were plenty of big and mid sized maps (+5vs5).

Since the rather unstable connections between US and Europe / Scandinavia (DDoS, general lag etc.)
There's usually no point to play on the few DP servers that exist. Often you gather a few friends and play DP locally.

Running around for 5 mins before you encounter the enemy or the flag just ruins the gameplay.

There's a couple of great small maps;
Arctic, arenaball, hsball, blazin, berlin ...

About the Dead-Man Recon thingy:

First of all, make it a server side option.
If a feature (let us call it that) has been around since
the begining, dont just remove it. Let the server admin decide if he wants it enabled or disabled.

Second, I wote for Dead people can only see their teammates

Just my 2 cents ..

I don't know about mp3 support (may not be legal), but I might be able to add ogg support.

Yes

eR33t is willing to supply the resources if there's someone who can do a decent site design for the review site.  It'd probably just be best to catch me in #pbdev on ETG to discuss it further.

Well, Im pretty much set with the site resources.
I was going for a mySql & phpnuke solution since it's
very easy to customize.

I have a friend who does webhosting and it seems he's willing to sponsor the space and bandwitdh.

When it comes to DP2 servers, I think it would be wise to have more than one. Since I live in Sweden, Europe the ping times usually is 250+ to the servers in
the US. So if eR33t is willing to supply a server, it would be great.

Paintball 2 Discussion / Poll: DP2 Map review site
« on: August 04, 2003, 04:40:33 AM »
Hi all,

I was wondering if the DP2 community would be interested of a map review site?

Here's the idea in general:

Give the mappers access so they could submit their work, map, info and screen shots.

A team (handful) of skilled mappers could write a short saying about the map, prons and cons. At the same time, the map would be put into rotation on the server for a week or two, (Together with more maps that's up for review.) and at end of the week there would be a public rating of the map or something similar.

This could drop dead, I know, that why I need feedback and support from the community about this project.

(You are more than welcome to hit reply and give me some feedback, ie: yes/no)

Can't you just use double set of images?

.jpg or .gif to use with the editor and a .pak with
the bmp's ..

Just a thought ..
