Problem is, the build number retrieved from the .php file isn't updated each time the game is.  The build number in the file must mean the server version, not the game version. 

Why not just purse the http://digitalpaint.org/files/ page and go off of the build version listed there, although still the problem arises when jitspoe updates a build and just posts the patch in the forums.

You may have better look using wings3d or milkshape3d for the initial modeling.  Once you have your model you want in game, use blender to convert the model to .smd.  This model then will need to be converted to .skm to be used in game.  If your model isn't to complex, .md2 is another model type you could use in DP.

Java has library bindings for both directx and opengl.  I have just started researching how to draw these overlays.  Java also has bindings to python so let me know if I can help you.

If you export the model as a SMD model, using the smd model exporter, you can use my SKM model converter GUI to make your models in a snap.
