Thanks!

"Do not hold the jump key through the jumps (this will slow you down instead)."

Guess that answers the question.

Paintball 2 Discussion / noob jumping question
« on: January 20, 2009, 01:29:09 PM »
Does matter whether you hold down the jump button or not?

I can't ever seem to  get the speed or apparent weightlessness I see other poeple getting, and I think it might be due to holding down the jump key while in the air.

It's a whole different muscle memory thing to relearn, so I wanted to see if it's a known thing before un-training myself the way I've been  going.

tnx

Paintball 2 Discussion / Re: Need another OTB Speed Server
« on: January 17, 2009, 01:45:56 PM »
I've  been playing on 60 second servers all the time, and it's just barely getting to the point where I don't imediately die five seconds into the round.  I was feeling pretty good about the slight improvement in skill when I entered the speed thing one time...

It was like the first day all over again.  Paint was coming out of everywhere and I never got to see who killed me.  I wouldn't last five seconds per spawn, and it was complete chaos.

I like the 60 second servers.  I like chase-camming the guy who killed me to see how he plays and how he managed to pop me so far away.  I like watching between spawns and learning how others do it.

I like the slower pace, the sneaking around listening for footsteps, the whispers to and from your team-mates.  If I had more time to game around I think I'd even like clan matches, if just to get more of that kind of play-style.

The speed thing is to much "overload" for me, and I'm not suited to it,  but more power to ya I say.  If that's what you like.

Resolved Help & Support / Global Login failure (b19)
« on: June 30, 2007, 12:37:43 AM »
It's been working fine up until sometime this week I think.
Now I get "Username (doxylamine) does not exist."  I can't do a global login anymore?  Did my name get deleted or something?

thanks,

Yep, must be good timing :)  We can't ever let June pass without a trip to the beach campground.  I'll get this card next time I get paid and see what it does.

Thanks for the help again!

Thanks, I've been off camping all week, and just got this ram stick in.  I'm still determined to get DP running on this box!

So now I'm going to try a different video card next, because the integrated 530 is apparently trashing out.  I'm looking at this cheap one on the link down there.  It isn't much, but DP is the  biggest thing this box is ever going to run.  Think it will do the job?

Hi again.  An update on this.

I took the old box and tripled the RAM in it.  Now it's got 156mb and 400mhz, the last driver SiS ever made for the 530, and there's no improvement.  I think it's got to be something else.  Tripling the memory should have made a noticeable difference, even if it still wouldn't run great.

But it's still exactly the same.  The menu/login screen shows up, but it's all but frozen and loops sound.  With the resources listed above, it should at least run the menu/console part of the game, shouldn't it?  Is there some way to troubleshoot for a memory conflict or other problem?  I tried reinstalling the game after the ram upgrade already.  Think reinstalling the display driver is worth the effort?

Could it be something silly like only having a 2-button non-wheel mouse?

thanks

Resolved Help & Support / Error message b19
« on: June 14, 2007, 09:37:48 PM »
I occasionally get this error when a game is loading.

I think it started when I tried to replace one of the pball/sound/death sounds with a different sound.  I put the old sound back, but now I still get this message once in awhile.  Is it somethng fixable?

thanks

Cheater Reports and Bans / Question on modifying content...
« on: June 12, 2007, 11:23:32 PM »
If I were to go in and add some more funny 'fragged' sounds sounds to the sound/death folder, or replace some with others I liked better, would this get detected  as 'modified content'  and somehow cheating?

Would they even work in-game?  I like most of the death sounds, but there are some I would replace with clips from favorite movies, etc.. if I was able to.

thanks

OK, I downloaded the map-pack from the "files" link at the top of this page (October 2006) and added all that stuff into their respective folders in my pball folder.  It looks like I have a bunch of more maps now.

Before I did that, I tried to go play on a server.  I saw people running around, but it said I was eliminated for another 45 seconds. Then it was asking me to vote on the next map, and I clicked something :) and it started to download a map I guess.  I thought I was holding people up so I quit and went looking for the map pack.  I'll try again this evening.

I didn't see a hi-res pack but I'm not particular about the graphics.  They already look great to me (coming from ages of nothing but Doom2)

I'll give it another go in a while :)

ty again

Wow, I just saw that!  On this box, the client pulls like 60MB :O  The 48 in the other one isn't going to cut it, especially with 98se running.  That was the best I could scrape up out of the junkbox.

I do need to build another box when I get the funds.  Is newegg cheaper than tiger direct?  I'll be lucky to find something in a yard sale with my bank account the way it is now :)  Until then I guess we' can only play Doom on the LAN here.

Well, another off topic thing.  If I can't play DP on the LAN right now, how can I play online?  I've got a login account now, and I can see a list of servers when I click "Join a Game"  Do I just jump in one and start shooting at people like Zdaemon Doom?  Sure it's a newbish question, but I haven't done a lot of online shooting, and never with teams or anything, just FFA.  Is there a faq or protocol for such thngs?

tnx

You guys helped me so well getting DP up running on this box, that I think maybe you could help me again :)

I put a junker together for my kid to play on LAN in the other room, and it's having problems.

Think it's a K6-2-400 and the  has got like 48Mb ram on it, (4MB committed to video) and 98se installed.  Old thing, but Q2 shouldn't require much more than 90mhz 16-25 Ram, right? Hardware acceleration is on full.

The int vid chip is SiS 530, and the game wouldn't start until I found the last driver made for it, which supposedly supports OpenGL.

So now the game starts, but there is a big problem with it.  It's VERY slow.  I mean slow as in: you move the mouse (at the menu screens), and wait ten seconds to see the pointer move.  The audio loops like a drumbeat.  It took several  minutes just to position the mouse over "Play" and click it.  I managed to get through to Start new game, and "Begin"  and the init console eventually displayed, but a game never started.

It it just too old and junky of a machine?  Or is the slowdown something fixable?

tnx

Resolved Help & Support / Re: Game freezes build A-18

When I start the game, I get a login screen for something, but I don't have an account or anything, so I esc out of that to the main menu.  I had just intended to do the LAN thing.  (Although the game looks so nice I might actually   get online with it after seeing it)  My only experience with online games is Zdaemon, I haven't tried to get paintball2 online yet.

The connect attempt I mentioned occurs just after PLAY-->Start New Game-->[Begin]   and upon clicking Begin.  That's when the firewall pops up and I had been denying access.  The last 2 times, I allowed it, and the in-game freezing didn't occur either time.

Now I just gotta get it running on the computer in the other room :)  (It won't run on the other computer because it's an old crappy laptop whose video card won't support open GL.  I might have to get another box for in there.)

Thanks for all the help & advice.

I think I got it.

By habit, whenever  my firewall reports a program requesting internet access I always deny it unless I'm using that program online somewhere.

When you click "begin" after starting a new game , the game attempts to access  something (?) and if I permit the access at that time, no freezing.  When I deny access, the game does the freezing.

I don't know what it needs a connection for, since I'm just running the maps by myself, but allowing the access fixed the problem!

I just tried build 19, and same thing.  Maybe I updated it wrong though.  I replaced the paintball2.exe and the ref_pbgl.dll with the newer ones.  The q2a3d file looked identical.

At first it seemed to freeze up less.  The first freeze happening 2 1/2 minutes into a 20 minute game, and then not another for 4 more minutes.  But after that, it was locking up every 40 seconds or so.

I didn't see any messages about sound buffers that I recall this time though.  Just the freezing thing.

Other than that, the game looks beautiful.  I'd just hate to wonder what'd happen if I froze up in a DM every few minutes :)

Resolved Help & Support / Game freezes build A-18
« on: June 08, 2007, 10:48:58 PM »
Hi,

downloaded this game to play with my kid over home LAN, and I'm trying it out alone here.  I start a game, either in player or observer mode, and I'm navigating the map.  It's running wonderfully for a while, but every few minutes the game locks up for 10-15 seconds, loops the last sound played, and is solid frozen.  Then it resumes just as it left off, playes fine a few minutes, and freezes again.

Occasionally after one of the freezes I'll get a message about sound buffers, and how it's switching to a secondary buffer or something, don't know if it's related

This old box isn't fancy, but I thought it would play this game .  1.8 ghz sempron, 512ram, xp, radeon 200 int,
 ac97 int

This is just in single player (me running the maps messing around)  haven't done any multiplayer yet.  I tried to record a vid of the freeze with fraps, but the freeze killed the fraps recording.  It does this with reflective water on or off.

Any ideas?
