Map Graveyard / Re: New Map: Cavern
« on: September 24, 2007, 01:38:03 PM »
My 2 cents

Lights look terrible, textures repeat too much (scale the water up some maybe), all in all It doesn't look very good at all. Might be fun to play (ala blitz) but that can't be told from screenshots. This is not a release map, this is a map you scratch and take the best ideas out of for the next map.

FtX

A new design is actually being worked up, as I forgot to mention in my last post. I will provide a shot as soon as I can rough something out, for more review and comments.

I am very intrigued by this topic and I can't describe how pleased I am with the influx of comments and discussion.
Over the course of the next few weeks as time permits, I will make an attempt at improving my ability to map. I was quite aware of the state of the map pre-release needing work and these comments should be great in throwing this together.

Feel free to continue this discussion as to which elements are necessary or suggestions for the map proposed.
I am as obviously at this point on the side that a map must have a theme, well I suppose you can bypass this by providing a map that is astetically pleasing, as long as game play is not effected. But in most cases themes aid in picturing a final "polished" map.

Also there are maps that are very well detailed that don't see play time, but I feel it is the design not the detail which comes into discussion there. And some ugly maps are designed in a way the masses don't mind the overall look so much. Either way a push for an equal balance is essentially a good goal.

Thanks, Rept

Will fix lights on top, I will make an attempt at modifying the walls(was expecting this comment).  As to nighttime sky i will try it and see what i think.

Haven't been mapping for to long, so I thank you for looking so far. Keep the input coming and I will do my best to modify the map.

Clans, Matches, and Tournaments / Re: Noob clan network!

Yeah i agree the xfire list lacks some clan affiliations.

does it help show a win/loss record? Can you send out a scrim request?

Find a way to keep an easily verified win/loss record , right now its pretty much irrelevant as general observation and experience is worth more.

Also , like its so hard to click a name and say "interested in a 2v2 ?"    Scrim request hits broad range but essentially both are so similar in terms of work , that its not even really an issue. Of course assuming your not to lazy to type for more than 12 seconds.

I mean don't get me wrong I'm for getting everyone on Irc to keep it uniform , but it was worth mentioning an alternative since we have seen how effective everyones been at getting irc.

ps: If this came off rude I mean nothing by it and it was not intentional.

Incidentally, having not used the voice feature in xfire much, is it any good?

Does it use direct p2p or a server to do voice?

You can do both, I have seen multi user rooms on xfire user created that include voice preety simply setup. As to the efficency I cannot say for sure. But It can provide a free alternative to a voice server.

Also alot of people are taking this debate into irc out of the origional point which is not enough people use it that are new and starting clans. Rather the information isnt avaliable (it appears to be) or the players dont understand what irc is and just avoid it.

I do agree the java applet fixes would help, but ill save that for the feature thread.

A proposed contact list for methods outside of irc would be nice for those who are unable to setup irc for whatever reasons. But doing so this link might aswell be just bumped for xfire names. http://dplogin.com/forums/index.php?topic=7596.0

Clan: InT - In Training
When did the clan start: Summer 2007
Current activity level: Low/medium (1 to a few games a week)
Recruiting Status: Looking for 1-2 more, that meet recquirements.
Brief history:  Created in the middle of summer 2007 by M7Feettall and Rept, InT is a clan dedicated to training players who are new to the DP match/scrim scene. We have training sessions and frequent scrimming against the top clans and beginner clans. We have welcomed new and experinced players who looked to better themselves and to just enjoy the game.

I agree you are a "real clan". Dont stress to much about members and just try and enjoy yourselves playing scrims/matches and practicing.

In my opinion communication is going to be an important part of how to move forward.

We would be up for a friendly game to help get all of you used to the scene, if you see m7 or myself around feel free to ask.

Yeah the thread seems to have that feeling in the title. But we should be here for a while.

people leaving has occured through some mirc gathered clans as well =/. I have my machine constantly up and down, so mircs a bother in most cases. But ill consider throwing it up on some of my longer sessions.

Actually if i get a chance to ban a few select people who enjoy spamming me ill probably have it up more often.

Actually saw this quite a while ago, and I remember watching the video and just shuddering at the immense amount of force being pressed out of the chambers.

Simply, ouch.

Appreciate the positive feedback from everyone so before I start, Thank you.

It has been a lot of fun recently, we have won some games, lost some games, and played some close ones. But this is not what is most important. The idea that keeps m7 and myself pushing forward is in the support and effort we see every day in our recruits. More than 1 of which was unable to strafe and is now rather proficient and moving onto and excelling at many of the multiple jumps and double/triple jump tactics.

And as m7 said as a clan we are not much competition for the top-tier clans , nor do we hold ourselves to that level. And I think the idea of not caring who we scrim in terms of difficulty has provided some of the best lessons there is on how to addapt and progress based on your opponents. Getting crushed in a game is a good reality check to your progression anyways and should be taken in stride.

In fact Myself and game-over(theFlash) may be watching pubs to find an eager friendly face in the comming days/weeks to expand our group a player or two to avoid the situation of people getting caught up in their quest for knowledge thats began to plague us now that most classes have begun.

To step a little into the item on trash talking, this is getting pretty bad recently. Spamming, unflattering language and abusive terms. Another plaguing problem is the fact of some of the newer clans leaving in scrimmages on the 2nd map or tie break if they get behind or lose the first map. Which is fine i don't wish to harass anyone into staying if they wish to give up but i do wish they could continue to play if only for the practice or to be courteous to us.  Commonly when asking why someone has left they reply saying its meerly a scrimage I cant be bothered to dedicate the time to a game that doesnt count.  :-\

As to lekky, we are not on mirc that much at all just usually when we are looking for a game which is the curse of our ventrilo chat i suppose. I will make an effort to stop in every so often when I can in the hopes that we can meet. :)

As to m7feettall we all extend our best wishes with the move for himself and his family and look forward to the day we have him back to play with us.

Like everyone has said the idea of the obstacles has been taken a little overboard and most of the jumps are a nuisance.

On either side i encountered a giant odd looking block maze which cut down play speed a good bit. And maybe it was my side but the yellow texture was really bright.

I like the idea but it just seems like everything is squeezed into the narrow hallways. If you could clean up the clutter/jumps  and fix a few textures it would be a decently fast pub map.

edit: the whole bottom sides are to bright actually.

I tried to scrim you yesterday and you banned me from your channel. So how about you unban me and we have a scrim.

Your ban was given due to your continuation to spam the channel and make a request we had already mentioned was unacceptable based on the terms of match we  requested and desired. Ill lift the ban for now, your welcome to the channel to idle and request games, though the ban will be easily replaced if repeated. Any questions reply or contact me on aim at your leisure.

In terms of the quote about us not looking for more members at this time is true, we have taken on a fair amount of players for now. Some exception is possible though in rare conditions. I look forward to the day we can welcome more players to our int family. Also any new clans who are looking for friendly games as a welcome to the scrim/match scene contact m7 or myself and we can setup something.

I was a little rushed so please contact me if something is unclear. thanks, rept

ps: in terms of the match mentioned above in m7's post they were very flexible and i extend my gratitude.
