General Development / Re: Mewa's Feature

To adapt, what I'd like to see would be that if a map where force voted and not currently on the servers list, it would be downloaded to the server as to allow it's play.

Yes jitspoe, it's similar now that you describe it like that. Whats up for vote is pretty confining compared to what I'm considering. I can't imagine anyone wants to pick between the best of two evils in terms of maps. I'm looking for something that would first and foremost allow a majority of players to initiate a map change (that seems to be covered in the feature you linked), but secondly I would love to see a mechanism to allow larger variety of maps to be played and showcase a wider set of player skills.

The game and its maps have gone through many phases, but there's no longer an outlet for some of the great maps from a different time. It's occurred to me to run a server with such a maplist, but that obviously makes little sense given the current population. In all reality this game has come down to supporting one or two semi full pubs at a time and the only hope of an unknown map being played would be through a forced voting system with such maps being available as a prerequisite. Storage is cheap, we all know this. Including a few hundred megs of maps in the serverbuild shouldn't really effect many hosts.

One of the things that always stuck with me were some of the unique maps that were developed. Some being long and enduring with especially fulfilling wins, others short and sweet but with exquisite geometry. These kind of lasting memories are worth implanting into a new set of players.

I don't think anybody has delusions of grandeur regarding this game becoming popular again, but I also think most of us would like to see some kind of resurgence in population. There's plenty of opportunity for this between old folk checking back in and still new players in countries with "emerging economies" where this game is technically relevant, we just need to push the right buttons.

wtf is this nonsense? did you just type whatever ran through your mind at the moment?

But if you really want to see the other side of paintball2, check out matching.

I sleep just fine at night. Besides, sedatives aren't really my bag.

Could you explain what an "RTV" system is or what it stands for?

Just assumed most had seen this script. RTV is "Rock the Vote" script. Players type !rtv in chat and a vote gets tallied. When enough votes are reached (server dependent, anywhere from 2/3's to little over 3/4's of entire server population), a menu appears with 4-6 maps from the servers rotation. This is where the oppurtunity to play the many largely unseen maps comes in. Have maplists composed of any map complying with that servers theme and just give heavy weighing to the standards. Every few RTV's a strange map will get into the choices. It also enables players to pick their favorites with the !nominate command (see below), this is similiar to what jitspoe mentioned with the current voting system.

Assuming worst case scenario and one person manages to get an awful map loaded, the solution comes from the source. Every pubber freaks out when they feast their eyes on the new landscape and they RTV to get back to the "safe" maps.

The RTV plugin is usually implemented with other related commands;

!nominate - allows any player to pick a map from the servers full maplist to be included in the RTV choices.

!votemap - more direct version of RTV. No menu is initialized. Each player enters the command and picks their map from the full list. If enough players vote for the same map, server immediately switches to it. The number of votes needed is less than RTV, usually about 1/2 - 2/3's the amount of votes RTV would need.

Here's a feature vote for for some map voting tweaks: http://dplogin.com/dplogin/featurevote/feature.php?id=10029
Here's a feature vote for vote skipping the current map: http://dplogin.com/dplogin/featurevote/feature.php?id=10155

Would it be covered by these?

Not even same ballpark. Why would it be so important to skip the mapvote for one round? (What are we doing distracting our sole developer with this kind of nonsense...)

You could vote in maps that weren't originally on the list.

Could and can.

If you stuck around long enough, you could, in theory, get your favorite map played by voting for it each map, even if it wasn't in the server's rotation.

Nothing theoretical about that.

In practice, though, people don't stick around on servers for long enough for that to happen.

Bombsaway gets played.

People just bail as soon as a map they don't like comes up, or they aren't winning, or they see something shiny...

Yea people can be figgity but from the little I know about gaming and life people usually don't do things they don't like. The exception in this case would be to simply get to the next map. Hence my request, this thread, this reply.

On a similar note, there's been too many times when the entire small server population doesn't like the current map. We all rally and join observer (quite a task honestly) to force a map change when suddenly a nobber joins up who has no idea where to read chat, let alone how to switch teams should he suddenly feel the need to assimilate with every other person in the pub.

Addendum: Probably should have just responded with the link to the original !rtv script, http://forums.alliedmods.net/showthread.php?t=57106

I'd like to see a "RTV" system implemented like they have in source games. Enough players don't like the current map and the pub gets a chance to vote in a new one. I always thought one of the worst aspects of this game is how the whole community seems to rotate the same handful or two of maps, completely ignoring hundreds of other creative and playable maps. If most of the repertoire were available, smaller groups could vote them on and start introducing another side of DP2. Could also help solve a lot of the population problems, certain maps seem to make people flee... I really have no idea, but it seems like this could be introduced without too many headaches since the vote system's already in place.

My next suggestion might be a little trickier from development to integration, but having a gun game mode would spice things up a bit and probably accelerate the learning curve for many new ones. Gun Game is just DM mode but when you kill someone you're gun changes to the next one up the rank. When you die, you go back a gun. It would really only work on the classic DM maps and might just turn into a clusterintercourse with the one hit kills. It'd be fun to see if we could make it playable as long as it's doable without too much burden.

If someone brought these up before in the forum, don't be a snot replying with a suggestion to the search button. I could care less.

Maybe I'm just antagonizing, but I'm curious as to how you're "sure you are a multi-accounter", or did you just pull this certainty out of your ass.

I'm also wondering why every person in this thread defending toxiic has spelling issues. Feel free to reply without spelling properly.

Jitspoe, whats the ruling on hosting a server while banned. Am I remembering right that it can't ping back to dplogin.com/be on the serverlist?

Is there anyone out there who can take an honest look at this thread (http://dplogin.com/forums/index.php?topic=24447.0) and conclude that this type of thing helped the game?

This is not about Cuso, but about what he chose to do, along with many others, and their general effect on the game. He is the example I chose to use because it was his thread that prompted this thought. There are many like him on different levels, but I think he is most appropriate because of his diverse roles.

Everyone knows the game is past retirement in age and is prone to these scenarios, but do we really need to pardon the worst offenders in some last ditch attempt to retain population? Is it just that we all know how old it is and its like telling grandpa "its okay now, drink yourself to death. we used to care, but now we understand your imminent death and you can do what ever the intercourse you want". If this is the case, I'm all for it. Let's just be honest about it.

Cuso, you didn't know the extent of your effects when you were doing it, I get that. You were young and stupid. Problem is you gave a lot of people a great reason to not give a excrement. People who had played for years had little reason to continue once a huge portion of the matching community just vanished.

Thank you for continuing to contribute, but you intercoursed up. Not once but twice. More over, you shouldn't have stayed around here still influencing the same game you tried to undermine. It's super dooper wonderful that you like to write code, just find a new place to do it.

Hacking punishments have always been a bit of a joke around here, and this kind of thing only helps to support that belief. If you were considering hacking this game, you read the some of the bans, and then read that you could actually make the hacks without real consequence or anyone actually giving a excrement, would you feel deterred?

are we done here, i think we're done.

Sincerely,
The Elephant In The Room

from what i remember the rules always been that you can host a server, but it can't report back in. its essentially a lan server. if it shows up on the serverbrowser it's illegal.

this toxiic guy seems to have nonstop negative threads. the dozen times i've looked at forums in the past few years seems to always have him involved in some absurd bs.

I think you're remembering something that you did to GT well after it was defunct, and even longer since I had been in it. From what I recall it had nothing to do with hacking, you simply typed a known password in that was given/slipped to you. I'm surprised Jitspoe still lets you play here, but he probably cares as much about you as everyone else does. You are your only promotional device and you've used it enough considering how weak and inconsequential your actions have been.

P.S. - Don't address me again.

Paintball 2 Discussion / Re: Speed Server Strike?
« on: January 03, 2013, 02:12:11 AM »
jitspoe, in all reality this is your game. do what you want at this point. so few people are left that are here daily, it mostly become a trial basis. i don't check in all that often, but i havent seen a server thats been filled within years. on a similar note, i wouldnt post if this game werent worth keeping around. i think many of us hold this opinion.

theres a place for speed servers, especially for new players who don't want to get plowed right off the block. still, it makes little sense to have a no limit respawn. this is ripe for spawn camping and complete manipulation. theres nothing wrong with waiting 10-30sec to respawn, and even becomes an advantage in a game thats so dependent on knowing where all the other players are.

make an update with a minimal respawn. the servers who dont comply will not be listed. the players who female dog will get used to it (i've gotten used to many different spawn times, all with initial whining, and in the end preferring 60sec in most cases). the servers who dont find their names on the list will see a dwindling amount of players joining. i'd rather see a dwindling server than a dwindling game.

at the end of the day, its pretty much all your game. its good to consult, but when so much of the dev in concentrated in on place, just do whats right. run it by a few handfuls of folk at first, but then just implement. make it fun for the public, while allowing the rest of us to play what we know. there needs to be a level of instinct involved in this.

sounds just like something i had years ago. it was clientside issue of the video card driver config. took so long to figure out i actually had to copy it to textpad just to remember, tough excrement i dont have that anymore. i remember it including "negative lod bias", and i believe "triple buffering" and "trilinear optimization". this was all for nvidia chipsets.

like i said, its been awhile, but it was such a game ruiner and pain in the ass that some of it stuck. some didnt. good luck.

be here jan 5th regardless.

this is a good thing. im not q2mod old, but ill try my best to harass those who are.

i didnt read all the posts, but in reply to your last post jitspoe; calrathan, loial, snipen, and any other rascals that aren't currently on the public sex offender list. those are just the ones that might need persuasion.

what are you thinking for a format? something like a 24-28 player pub with super poor rotation would be nice. razzle mcdazzle needs to be in there. let me know if you need help serving.

ps - jitspoe, you meddling killed my clan without permission. i had to reinstate it. cl, i know you pretend not to read this crap, but you do and youre expected to rejoin promptly.

not trying to sound like i know anything, but instinctively it seems like hardware/hardware setup incompatibility. have you tried changing the "compatibility mode" of the pb2 process? turn off visual effects etc. also maybe try running off the mb's video chip, or anything else that could eliminate variables.

« on: March 05, 2010, 04:02:24 AM »
alright jitspoe, heres what ive got for you.

i had the same frustration, of going from an os whom's territory i felt i could walk on the water of, to this new and seemingly better thing (more convinced everyday this is the case) that i can just tread its water. seems most serious users bypassed the vista option all together, for known reasons, and left this new planet without due products to make it the way it could and should be. anyways things are definitely more tied down in 7 and it makes me think im on a mac half the time (but i kiss the carpet everytime i realize im not), but this program has helped me for the few hours ive had it.

http://www.vistastartmenu.com/index.html

not a full fix to the lack of customization that made pc's what they are, but a good start. seems to run lite'ish, but has a hell of a time creating the initial cache (i hope it's only initial). all in all a lot more flexibility and showing of what i'd like to see in a start menu, so im going with it till it does something to really piss me off. check it out.

ps - if you can figure out how to set the "menu delay" in this program, let me know. i havent gone into the reg yet, but playing with the programs options while writing this doesnt show anything. way too slow though, by far is gonna be my gripe with this program.

not supporting the obvious unfair advantage aspect..... but those are some meddling hilarious models. if they werent hacks he'd win dp2 design of the year. figure out a way to let people like this help with the game instead of shove it further into the abyss.

amendment: br55hit, on second glance it looks like those are based on the original models. did you retain the animations too? post a .dm2 if you did (for giggles and poo)

amendment ii: dont make the issue worse by saying they had nothing to do with obtaining advantage. if that was the case you would have made the flags into garden gnomes.
