Help and Support / Arch Linux - libgcrypt 1.6.x breaks the game (and fix)
« on: September 16, 2014, 05:26:18 PM »
Hi.

I recently tried paintball again on Arch linux , now the game is not playable on that distro - it uses libgcrypt 1.6.2, when you start the game it doesn't pause the first time you load the game (on a fresh install) - I believe this is connected with the anti cheat system.

Anyway the game does load however you will thrown out of any server (including localhost) - tempban.

The 'fix' is to install  libgcrypt 1.5.x - you can do so from AUR

https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/lib32-libgcrypt15/

(for the X86_64 version)

Linux version works fine !

(Linux sound could still do with some love...)

I like paintball that much I even run a separate Linux distro which still 'supports' OSS (Arch) just for paintball2...

Improving Linux sound...

At present it doesn't work well in Ubuntu at all.

The main issues are

OSS:-

- Oss works fine if your OS supports it, it is going to be removed from the kernel completely shortly - game plays full speed, stable.
- Ubuntu removed the old oss modules from the kernel - the alsa-oss and the oss-compat package do not contain them - you cannot use oss in ubuntu unless you compile your own kernel.
* note : Debian, Fedora, Opensuse, Arch linux all still do have the oss modules built in the kernel (you have to manually activate them)

Alsa :

- Speed is fine
- Doesn't crash
- Sound doesn't work (cuts out constantly, mix ahead settings do not help...)...
At present the alsa module doesn't really work - it doesn't matter if your using pulseaudio or not - it cuts sounds out before they have finished.

SDL :

- randomly crashes on startup (only with SDL module do you get a 2 in 4 chance of it segfaulting straight away)
- on some systems its far slower - game loses its great responsive feel
- also creates a speed fluctuation in the game (sound and fps slow and speed up) making it harder to play in

Jitspoe mentioned openal support - is this coming ? or can the alsa module be fixed ?

Will do Jitspoe.

Its really only Ubuntu that has issues (due to lack of oss kernel modules) - Debian is fine.

Linux client is fine (except the long running issue with sound...)

Is openal or better alsa support coming soon?

I'm o.k because I bother to compile my own kernel (to include old oss modules) - however most Ubuntu users will not do that.

Official Feature Votes / Re: Feature: Zoom function.
« on: January 23, 2013, 03:39:48 PM »
Although zoom improves most fps games I think having a zoom function/script would ruin dp....

The game is so fast paced that zoom would just slow down the game, plus it would benefit campers.

Linux version (client)  seems fine (from limited testing)

Thanks to Valve working with Nvidia on its Linux drivers there has been a serious speed up, which is nice.

http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2012/11/07/nvidia-double-geforce-performance-for-linux-drivers/

The only issues remaining are

1. sound (I am actually going to the bother of compiling my own kernel to have oss sound in Kubuntu at present) however improved openal support is planned (possibly)
2. the fact that when you press tab it cycles really fast.

Like the new menu btw

Cheers

+ 1 for openAL support

(I have voted...)

Not 100% sure...

All I know is that since Nvidia driver 302.17 it seems like there is a huge lag in 3D games that didn't exist previously...

https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=143495

And until I disable it there is not much difference regardless of Vsync setting in game..

10
Well its not the end of the world.

And actually if I reduce mixahead to 0.0 with SDL the sound / speed issue actually seems o.k
- its just the random segfault at the startup of the game - its completely random - but the important thing is once the you in the game it doesn't crash. (this is only with SDL) and when it segfaults its right away so you can easily and quickly restart...

oss will still be around for some time yet (centos 6 is supported until 2020...) , even if not officially supported (not that anything is really official in the Linux word..) oss will stlll be available.

To be honest SDL is a good choice, you know that is going to be around for a while , I believe Valve are using SDL (openal also) for sound in their Linux ports.

I imagine turning off 'sync to vblank' would have similar results in Windows...

Sorry not sure. I believe that Windows may suspend its equivalent of 'desktop effects' by default (really not sure as I stopped using it a long time ago).

With Linux the default setting is stupid for gaming, and those 2 simple options drastically speed up things  (i think its due to some chipsets, i.e crappy Intel having issues that they are not the default options....)

Hi.

The only way I can play dp2 'properly' in Linux is to use the OSS sound module, the other 2 have issues (see below)

This is an issue as Ubuntu (the most popular distro) has removed the oss modules from the kernel meaning that if I want to run dp2 in Ubuntu and have a bug free time I have to compile my own kernel (not a great solution) - other distros i.e Fedora, OpenSUSE are fine as they keep the oss snd modules in the kernel - however one issue is that soon the legacy oss modules are going to be completely dropped.

Here are the issues with the other modules

Alsa :

- Speed is fine
- Doesn't crash
- Sound doesn't work (cuts out constantly, mix ahead settings do not help...)...

SDL :

- randomly crashes on startup (only with SDL module)
- on some systems its far slower
- creates a speed fluctuation in the game (sound and fps slow and speed up)

Until now I have held off moving my main system to Kubuntu due to these issues (dp2 means that much to me....)

Is there likely to be an improvement to the sound modules? If alsa didn't cut out the sound that would be best (as everyone has alsa pretty much)

if you do 2 simple changes (for Nvidia users at least) you will get a 50% frame rate boost in **all 3d games**

Anyone running Unity, KDE, etc with Nvidia that hasn't tried this do so now and you **will** get a huge boost in FPS in all fullscreen openGL games.

For me I get a 50% increase in FPS in all games / openGL apps in Ubuntu with Nvidia by doing the following:-

1. Enable the binary Nvidia driver

2. enable 'unredirect fullscreen windows' in CCSM
-  Navigate to ccsm -> Composite - Enable unredirect fullscreen windows
- If using KDE (far far far better desktop) then the option is it desktop effects -> advanced -> disable desktop effects on fullscreen apps.

3.  disable 'sync to vblank' (openGL settings) with nvidia-settings
(this is really important or all games appear laggy)

Thats improve all openGL performance -  I am talking about multiple different computers with different nvidia cards..

Ubuntu/kubuntu 12.10 is **faster** and snappier after doing this than any other release

New Linux client seems fine - Played for several hours no issues.

Not tried the server.

Cheers for doing the linux build so quickly   ;D

I have xubuntu 12.04 (64bit) running this game ok I have had it working on a geforce 8500 and a 450 gtx

I suggest

1) checking you have all dependencys installed - also re-download it (just in case you have a corrupted archive (unlikely)
2) disabling twinview and see if the problem persists. (it is possible to specify which screen to start an app I believe)
3) chaning sound output to SDL (if you want sound)

For extra debugging:-

- Install gdb
- launch game with

gdb ./paintball2
- type run

I have a (hopefully simple) request...

Can you fix the issue with the Linux client where you have to repeatedly press TAB to see the score?

i.e if I press TAB is toggle score on/score off really quickly...

Its a minor thing I know but annoying none the less.

Cheers

I'd just like to say that that doesn't happen for me - at least on Arch Linux (64 bit) (I have only tested this system – but if it works on Arch it works on anything...)

I will try Ubuntu 11.10 and Opensuse 12.1 (64bit) shortly and see if I get the same issue...

Jitspoe - the reason is that Linux has had good 64bit support for 1/2 decade and you don't generally need any 32 bit apps (the only ones I use are games - Flash/ Java are 64 bit now) so the libraries are not loaded by default on some distros - to load unneeded libs would be bloated (like Windows..)

And some distro's do load them by default – I believe that Opensuse does for a start
.
p.s the way Ubuntu handles 32bit apps has changed

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/OneiricOcelot/ReleaseNotes#A32-bit_compatibility_on_amd64_systems

“Ubuntu 11.10 provides "multiarch" support for installing 32-bit library and application packages on 64-bit systems. For all amd64 installs and upgrades, select 32-bit software (like Skype and Flash), will now be installable directly using the same 32-bit packages that are used on i386 installations. You are not required to install the ia32-libs compatibility package. For users, this change means that the 32-bit libraries will always be available at the same time as their 64-bit counterparts, even in the case of security updates, and users will only need to install those 32-bit libraries required by the user's application(s). “

Edit:-

Works fine in OpenSuse12.1 (after installing 32bit libs) - i.e no messing about needed...

Will try Ubuntu at some point soon and see if I get the same issue.

Updated the first post with the full installer and Linux version.  Could somebody test these and check for any (new) issues?

Downloading the full installer version now......

0.33 was completely fine (in terms of not crashing) so hopefully it will be o.k.

I'll let you know after a bit of play.

edit:
------

Full Linux version works 100% fine.

Thanks Jitspoe - Linux build 0.33 seems fine - played for about 20 mins - the old crash has gone (by the looks of things)

Its so good that I can join servers now all the time (instead of getting old version warning)

Best new years present !

Unsure about the physics changes also... Will  get used to it though.

Have a good new year to all !
