Cheater Reports and Bans / Re: The Zoogooz Hackusation
« on: April 13, 2006, 03:45:15 PM »
Sticking my pretty face in here to give some old school knowledge :)

I don't play anymore and, as such, dont follow the clan and player developments these days.  However, I can comment that some players and clans have a long reputation of being cheaters.  Zoogooz and RR in general (due to a few players) has that negative reputation.  I have experienced first-hand certain things that led me to believe that he cheats sometimes, but of course that is hard to prove.  Its my word against his.  So if there is a demo now that shows certain things that suggest cheating, it's easier to judge him a cheater.  The point is, make sure you are looking at the demo objectively and take into consideration these other things before deciding his fate.

Also another important thing to remember is that cheating does not make someone a better player.  Just because someone plays better or has a better score does not mean they must be cheating.  Likewise, just because someone who you think is cheating doesn't have a good score does not mean he isn't cheating.  The fact that they are cheating only makes them have an unfair advantage over other players, which they may or may not be good enough to actually use to their advantage.

Also consider the source of who is doing the accusing.  Not to suggest anything on this particular matter, but as I am watching from the outside these past few months, I have to laugh at the whole thing, because some of the people getting outed are guys who I could have told you were likely cheaters and at the same time, there are some accusers who I wonder if they are guilty themselves and are just trying to deflect their guilt on someone else.    It's all very amusing.

Paintball 2 Discussion / Re: Sprayfests vs. Strategy
« on: December 24, 2004, 12:10:44 PM »
Wow.  This is a funny thread.  Are you guys just that ignorant or do you refuse to see the truth?  Completely missing the point of what Jits is saying.  Basically everything Jits said is correct and everything eiii and loial21 said is completely wrong or missing the point.  And thats not meant to be insulting, I'm just summing it up to be brief  :)

I dont even know how to reply.  If you didn't already understand what Jits said, which was spelled out perfectly, then I dont know how anyone can tell you differently.

Without rehashing what has already been said, I think we need to realize something else here.  There are 3 basic types of DP players in this situation.

1) You have the old-schoolers who know what DP was like during its glory days when midnight, pforest, brainstorm, and other actually good maps were prevailant.  Matches meant something.  Pub servers were a place to hone your skills and enjoy the game.  There wasn't any retarded jump servers.  Sure there were still bad servers, bad maps, bad players, etc back then too, but they were a minority and seniority in the game made sure they were kept in the minority.  These old schoolers are the people who rarely play nowadays but want to play.  They go on a server and get disgusted with the quality of play and leave.

2) You have the new school llamas who only want to bunny hop through the maps at super high unnatural speeds and spray.  They also flock to play the least strategic, least creative, and most dumbed down maps possible. These are unfortunately the people who play the most.  They have no sense of competition, they are numb to what is actually fun, and they lack taste. It really becomes repetition.  These are also people like Snipen who abuse server priviledges and degrade the entire community with his lack of responisibility and sense.  Now I'm not saying all new-school players fall in this category, just that most seem to.

3)  The third type are the newbies and new-school players who arent llamas. These are the people who are the reason WHY we should be upset with the way things are and WHY we should bother fighting it.  THese  are the people who arent used to playing the game and need to be mentored and taught the right way to play.  We dont want these people to go on Graf and get the wrong impression.  Worse than that, we dont want them to go on Graf and be encouraged to play and act that way.

So basically as the old-school players went away and/or became less active (which is to be expected) they have to be replaced by someone right?  They get replaced by newbies and new-school-llamas.  But over the years they were replaced more and more by the new-school-llamas and less and less by newbies who didn't turn lame.  The other big problem was bad servers. Servers who played the worst maps, had ignorant, irresponsible, abusive admins, and that were owned by such complete losers like Snipen.  Since said server and admins are part of the new-school-lllamas, other new-school-llamas gathered there too.  So when newbies look for somewhere to play, the only full server regularly was Graffitti and they either get a bad impression and never play the game again or they turn over to the lame side with them cuz they think that is acceptable.  Old school players turn their nose in disgust and play even less because they cant stand that type of behavior.  Now someone like Jits,  Fourthx, Smurf, myself, etc tries to fight this and teach people the true way to play and we get flamed for trying to change the game, when the game already has changed for the worse.

Sorry for the rant, but the point is that you can deny or give excuses to everything that Jits said originally, but the only way it will be like that is if you dont put up with it at all.  Dont ever play on graf.  Dont play on stupid 1 dimensional maps like Blitz.  The main reason why maps like Blitz are popular and why people play on Graf is cuz there isnt any alternative to sway them to.  Most of these people play that way simply because thats what was popular and they dont know any better.  If more of us play on other servers and on better maps and dont spray and play the game the way it was meant to be, some of them will realize it and start playing more this way too.  Sure some will still want to be lame and spray and play stupid maps, but they will be the minority again, just like it used to be.

Clans, Matches, and Tournaments / Re: Rules of a 4-team match?
« on: September 25, 2004, 07:28:52 PM »
We had a 4 team match once. DOM, Smurf, cP, and someone else.  It was whoever won got 3 wins, 2nd got 2 wins and 1 loss, 3rd got 1 win and 2 losses and last got 3 losses.  We had agreed to this more than a week in advance.  Of course come time to play, everyone else backed out of the agreed upon terms.  DOM lived up to our agreement, I dont know if everyone else did.  But that makes the most sense to me doesnt it?  Its kind of like 3 matches together.  DOM vs Smurf, DOM vs cP and DOM vs the other team.  I count three.

Bugs, Feature Requests, and Feedback / Re: KOTH Mode
« on: June 19, 2004, 06:39:17 PM »
That sounds cool, but I have to wonder how much it will get played.  How often is siege mode played?  The typical DP'er seems too lazy to get away from their normal playing routine even in normal CTF mode, let-alone an entirely new game mode.  But maybe the new mode will attract fresh blood to the game, who knows.

Digital Paint League / Re: Digital Paintball League has begun!
« on: June 19, 2004, 06:24:03 PM »
Agreed, but if you have too little structure, you leave yourself open for potential confusion and problems.  So its important to have enough rules and structure to make the league run smoothly and with as few problems and confusion as possible, but without overburdening players with so many that they are afraid to participate.

But I had an idea for the league (whoever is actually doing it.)  Actually it's not my idea, Jballz came up with it a few months ago and I just revisited it today.  Here is what he posted originally.

Quote
Which brings me to another point: there should be a specific set of DP League maps. Since the point of the league is for CLANS, ie, TEAMS, to compete, the matches should be on maps that encourage large teamwork: pforest, castle, etc. Then, we could have specific maps for each week.

For example, week 1: map1, map2 week2: map3, map4. Then the maps can repeat after a few weeks. Or, we could have a specific bin of maps that teams can choose from in matches - however, teams cannot choose the same map twice in a row for their map (merely in an effort to keep the teams more fair - if a team knows a map really well and can rock it, they shouldn't be able to play it every week - only every other week). The tiebreaker map could be handled the same way, I suppose.

This is an interesting idea for the sake of competitive balance and fairness.  It would depend on if we could agree on enough standard maps to use for the entire season.  But it would certaintly eliminate any potential cheapness or unfair play issues cause everyone would be playing the same thing.

Digital Paint League / Re: Digital Paintball League has begun!
« on: June 07, 2004, 07:17:32 PM »
Apparently my post was too long, so I had to cut it into two parts, lol  ;D

Basically you want specific and thorough rules, restrictions, guidelines, ettiquite, etc.  Dont assume anything.  What you think everyone will know or follow already might not be true.  Of course no one wants any nit-picky rules and restrictions, but you gotta have every areas covered.

Also everyone needs to realize that if anyone doesn't like the rules or thinks they are too complex or whatever, they dont have to participate.  We aren't forcing them to play a certain way, we are just enforcing a fair and competively balanced system to ensure that every match has equal importance and significiance to each other.  Otherwise the league is meaningless.

Please, PLEASE, don't half-ass this.  Dirtytaco, Oddjob, and I were talking about a month ago about doing this and having it organized and sponsored by Prozak, Smurf, and DOM, since we were the only real clans of significance at the time.  Just the timing didn't seem right yet.  So if you think the timing is right now or at least you want to try it out, sort of like a test run, then I suggest you also us help organize it with you, assuming the other two still want to help.  I know I do.  I think a test run of a league is a great idea and I had been thinking of doing that myself.  The only reason I didn't push for it was because FourthX wanted to help and he suggested we wait a while till he got his servers up and running.  There are more servers out there now though, so we can still do it.  But we should take this league seriously so that we can keep doing seasons.  Which is another reason it should be organized by a group of people, so that it keeps going even if certain people might lose interest in it.  Also the better the league runs, that might help boost clanning activity and help the scene grow.  And finally, we can teach these newbies or lazy old-school players how to properly match and maybe it will stick in non-league matches for some clans, which would make the clanning scene all the more better.  And thats always a good thing.

Digital Paint League / Re: Digital Paintball League has begun!

Basically, if you look at your rules page as it stands now, the entire first paragraph is flawed and Ill tell you why.

Quote
The league is here to facilitate matches played by the clans. As such, we are not here to impose a myriad of restrictions which WE think will make the league fun and balanced.

Right away you are lowering the quality of the league.  The league should be what you (or we, cuz I'm helping right?  ;) ) think is fair and balanced.  Hopefully fun too, but if its fair and balanced that should take care of fun as well.  Thats not to say that you should say "You MUST do this, you MUST do that, you MUST NOT do this, etc", but at the same time you shouldn't let the rules be ran by the clans.  If you want every clan to have a say, everyone vote and form rules and restrictions before the league starts, not on a match-to-match basis.

Quote
DP clans have been matching for a long time and basically know what to do.

If you have actually played matches against most of the clans that play these days, you would know that this isn't true.  Clans know how to play, but most don't know how to properly match.  I constantly have clans asking me for 2v2 matches.  You need to have a bunch of rules (not really rules but just guidelines) for matching just to make sure everyone is on the same page.  This will mostly be common-sense that everyone should know and follow already, such as only one team joining their color and then the other team joins after everyone from the first team joins.  Everyone should know that already, but you will be surprised how many clans don't.  And thats not really a rule, its just something that makes matching more organized and run smoothly.

Quote
There are a few rules, such as minimum team size and map restrictions which we think are absolutely necessary.

You absolutely need rules dealing with format, but you also need rules that ensure competitive balance.  And thats where I think most clans/people don't regularly follow in non-league matching and don't even comprehend or understand to begin with.  Things like regulated maps will help to keep matches fair and balanced.  If each match, which is weighted equally, are unbalanced because each one is played completely differently, then you don't really have a league.  Its more just a ranking system and you might as well just run a ladder instead.

Quote
Otherwise, it is up to the clans themselves to play fair and balanced and have fun.

Again, if you leave it up to the clans themselves, it probably won't actually happen.  There will always be the clan that tries to bend the rules towards their favor.  The more you leave it up to the clans the more conflicts will arise.  And even if both clans completely agree to every stipulation in their match and both feel it was completely fair and balanced, that does not necessarily mean its fair and balanced with the rest of the matches in the league, which is the purpose of the league in the first place.

Quote
If a clan is found to be disruptive, it will be removed.

Nothing I can find wrong here, its the only thing in this paragraph that is right  ;)  But seriously, the only thing you need to be careful with is to not be too lenient on this.  Of course you also don't want to jump the gun and kick a clan out for some small and minor disruption.  If you outline specific and thorough rules to begin with, this will make it easier for clans to know how to act and what will or won't get them in trouble.  Then they will have no right to complain if they screw up.

Ok ill just say this.  As much as everyone would like a lenient rules-free league, you need some strict rules for it to work without tons of conflicts.  For instance, if a clan doesn't have enough to play on the agreed upon date/time and didnt reschedule at least 24 hours ahead of time, they should be required to play shorthanded (provided they stay above 3) or forfeit.  This may sound strict, but really this is only to keep it fair for everyone.  If a clan can't accept and follow this, then they probably shouldn't bother joining the league to begin with.  Some clans are smaller and just want to play for fun and thats cool, but you cant be detrimental to the entire league and ruin everyone elses day just cuz you want to be included.  You follow?

The more we focus on those types of situations that could arise and have a plan for them now, the smoother it will run and ultimately the more meaningful and fun the league will be.

Also a map list (or at least a unaccepted map list) is a MUST.  This is easily the biggest source of conflicts and imbalance between clans and it would be wise to not make it the biggest source of conflict and imbalance in the league as well.

Paintball 2 Discussion / Re: KZ's Rant of the Moment
« on: May 25, 2004, 09:05:42 PM »
Most players dont really care about whats best for the game, they are mostly concerned with what makes them play the best (or at least what they think is actually playing good  ;))  So of course most of them female doged and threatened to never play again. But you know what, most of them did play and got used to it and are doing just fine.

Clans, Matches, and Tournaments / Clan List
« on: May 24, 2004, 09:17:06 PM »
I made a nifty list of currently at least semi-active clans.  I'm sure there are more out there that I forgot or don't know about.  So add to the list.  And if anything is inaccurate, add that as well.

Also I've noticed that pretty much no one keeps a website anymore.  I strongly suggest every clan keeps a website with an up-to-date list of members and match results.  It doesn't have to be fancy.  HTML is pretty simple and there are a lot of free or very cheap web hosts out there.  There should be no reason for not keeping a clan website.

Heres the list, complete with clan name, website, irc channel, and members.  Maybe we should include a leader/representative as well, so people know who to get in touch with.  Though that could just as easily be on the clan website!!! ;D

Mapping / Re: Tactics vs Spray Fest

Late in replying, but still relevent.

There are definte tactics in DP.  If you go on graffitti and play a typical public game, you wont find them though.  But in a real match, they are there.  Anyone who wishes to make maps should make them with specific tactics in mind.  Ideally you want to try to make a map that is fun to play, has lots of strategic tactics, and looks nice.

The most important things to consider is item placement and multiple paths.  Making the guns and equipment balanced so that there is enough, but yet not so much that everyone can just spray the whole time.  I love jits concept of lesser guns on the rush paths, medium in defensive places, higher end in difficult to reach spots.  Also making a map that has multiple paths but isnt too complex is key.  If a map maker can work on those and get that part of it right, then they can at least make a decent map.  Including more tactical spots and making it look nicer in general is just icing on the cake - what seperates the good from the great.

I would like to see someone attempt to make a good strategically balanced 4 team map.  We dont have too many of those.  Kaos and Winter1 are fun, but are too linear for a bigger match.  I'd like to see something that would work for a 5v5v5v5 type of match  :D

Digital Paint League / Re: DP LEAGUE - EVERYONE READ!!!
« on: May 01, 2004, 06:34:47 AM »
Thats the point.  I cant do it all by myself.  And I dont think anyone else can either and make a decent league (look at previous attempts for examples)  So I was attempting to involve everyone by representation of each clan, but obviously half of them just arent cut out for it.  So just the people and clans that have shown interest in actually working for it, not just interest in it, are going to help us.  Its going on, just like I said with my VERY first post, a league aint going to happen for a while.  The purpose was a standards committee, not a league.  If anyone wants to help, just start matching better like DOM, Smurf, and Prozak are trying to set an example for.  An official committee and eventual league are still in the works, it just looks like its going to be a DOM, Smurf, and Prozak, cuz we are the only ones who seem to actually want it.
