Paintball 2 Discussion / Re: DP2 is being sold... for money.
« on: April 08, 2016, 10:35:00 PM »
No, Nathan and I cannot sell Digital Paint: Paintball 2.  I had a discussion with the iD Software legal department about this nearly 15 years ago.

It's a bit annoying that someone else is making money from the game that we made and haven't been able to profit from.

I believe ZeniMax Media owns publishing rights to iD software games, which means they would have to peruse this matter.  I'll attempt to contact their legal team.

I have successfully downloaded an 800mb DivX movie over the paintball2 fast download system.  Thanks to jitspoe, I now have a covert channel for sneaking prelease builds of games out from work.

What every happened to the stat-tracking ability I added into Paintball about 4 years ago, where it sends a packet for every event to some central logging server?

Mapping / Re: Dynamically Sizing Maps
« on: March 29, 2004, 03:10:17 PM »
History of DSM: DSM was first implimented by Cyberdog in QTeam.  I dont recall any maps that used it that actually got played.

I included it in PB2 mainly for 4 team maps, allowing areas to be closed off if no one was on that team at the start of the round.  It makes for some interesting gameplay.... an interesting use for it would be to widen chokepoints when teams are larger.

And I apololgize for not documenting any of the cool things in PB2. =P

I have a radeon mobility 9200.

However I am running 3rd party Omega drivers [tweaked versions of the offical ATI drivers].

I havent been able to narrow down when it crashes, except that it SOMETIMES does when I alt-tab.

Paintball 2 Discussion / Re: Framerate and Jump Height

"If this is true, then people pinging like 70 and under have a huge jumping advantage than people pinging 100+. Not to mention any higher."

No.  Ping and bandwidth are very separate, especially because Q2 uses UDP.

Your computer can fire off as many packets as you want it too, up to the bandwidth of your link.  Ping just changes the latency of the reciept by the server.

If Q2 used TCP, then there is flow control imposed on your data, which limits the number of packets in flight.  This is not a number of packets persay, as it is a number of bytes.  If you send to many packets, you're going to likely overload some router along the path, increase your latency and cause the reliability mechanism to realzie it hasnt gotten an ACK within the expected round trip time.  This will double the RTO and effectively half the window size per unit time for each packet that has to be re-transmitted.  Therefore latency and throughput are somewhat inversely related in TCP communications.
