Other Stuff / Database with web front end question
« on: September 14, 2009, 07:33:51 PM »
Currently I have several Access databases with (surprise! ) data. My users have a form built from within MS Access.  So in order to access this data, you must have the front end mdb file with the form in order to do so.

There are also also 2 asp pages that can pull records from the database.  It appears that these asp files are also calling vb pages to do the data queries.

Now here's what I want to do:

  • 1. Convert the existing access db to a sql db (NO I AM NOT GOING TO USE MYSQL KTHX)
    2. Go from the access entry forms to a web front end.
    3. There is also a method of importing data via an xls spreadsheet in to the db so I need to look at that.

With that being said, any recommendations of a language to look at to write these web based data front ends?

I am a n00b when it comes to interfacing a web page to a data base so I'll listen to most advice. If there are any recommended "Dummy's Guides" I'd be interested in hearing about them.

Thanks,

Issues for Committee Review / Multiple Accounts - play3r1
« on: August 03, 2009, 10:01:27 PM »
From a pm:

I've had multiple accounts. My other one is the username: "abelinkin". I haven't used it in over a year though, and don't plan on it, and have never used him during gameplay. You probably wouldn't have found out, but my DP2 software crashed completely, so I don't plan on using it anytime soon anyway (since all of my settings went corrupt, and now I can't even log into my real "play3r1 username). I thought this would be a great time to turn myself in.

There's actually a funny story as to why I created that account (and you're the first to hear it). Well over a year ago, DNT (you may remember it) was a popular clan, and I was the leader. Anyway, we tried to get as many members as possible, that was the goal. However, DB (death bringers) was having much more success at having massive members in their clan. This pissed me off, because at the beginning we were rivals. And now they were a stupid clan that was full of noobs, this was my feelings towards the clan at the time.

This is when I came up with an evil plan to corrupt all of DB, and I would've too, if it had worked. I created the abelinkin username. My plan was to join DB with it, then ask one of the leaders if he would let me become a member. Then after that I would kick the other leaders from their leadership. Then I would kick everyone else out of the clan as well. So I would be the only remaining member, and that would be the fall of DB. I contacted the leaders of DB but I never got a reply, so the plan didn't work. Then everyone gradually lost interest in DNT, and I, the founder of it, even left the clan.

I still think it's kind of stupid to have a clan with that many members, but I could care less about clan situations now. That was all over a year ago. I otherwise have been following the rules. I haven't logged in as abelinkin in over a year an have forgotten the passwords for it.

It's kind of a funny story. Anyway, farewell for now. I guess I'll be back if /when I'm done being banned. By the way, if you haven't seen it already, I've posted a thread in General Paintball Discussion that has the link to a song that I've made. Pretty Fly For a White Guy DP2 version. It's full of DP2 quotes to make the song funnier. You should check it out. Anyway, thanks for your time.

Other Stuff / Sharepoint or Wiki for a document/knowledge base
« on: June 04, 2009, 11:49:18 PM »
I need some sort of document/info reference for my self at work.  I have nothing formal set up.

I'll be keeping track of everything from servers and their inventory, software versions, and infrastructure notes.

I thought about using a light weight wiki but also though that setting a small sharepoint portal might be good for the learning process.

Any thoughts on this?

Other Stuff / New cruises offered for shooting enthusiests
« on: April 24, 2009, 11:54:42 AM »
Wow - sign me up!

I was checking cruise lines because I heard the rates are very cheap right now.

I found a Somali cruise package that departs from Sawakin (in the Sudan) and docks at Bagamoya (in Tanzania).

The cost is a bit high @ 800 per person double occupancy but I DID NOT FIND that offensive. What I found encouraging and enlightened is that the cruise is encouraging people to bring their 'High powered weapons' along on the cruise. If you do not have weapons you can rent them right there on the boat. They claim to have a master blacksmith on board and will have reloading parties every afternoon. The cruise lasts from 4-8 days and nights and costs a maximum of $3200 per person double occupancy (4 days). All the boat does is sail up and down the coast of Somalia waiting to get hijacked by pirates. Here are some of the costs and claims associated with the package.

$800.00 US/per day double occupancy (4 day max billing)

M-16 full auto rental $ 25.00/day ammo at 100 rounds of 5.56 armor piercing ammo at 15.95

Ak-47 riffle @ No charge. ammo at 100 rounds of 7.62 com block ball ammo at 14.95

Barrett M-107 .50 cal sniper riffle rental 55.00/day ammo at 25 rounds 50 cal armor piercing at 9.95

Crew members can double as spotters for 30.00 per hour ( spotting scope included).

Jesus Christ---- they even offer RPG's at 2,075 bucks and 200 dollars for 3 standard loads

"Everyone gets use of free complimentary night vision equipment and coffee and snacks on the top deck from 7pm-6am."

Meals are not included but seem reasonable.

Most cruises offer a mini-bar... these gung ho entrepreneurs offer......... get this.....

"MOUNTED MINIGUN AVAILABLE @ 450.00 per 30 seconds of sustained fire"

Sign my ars up!

They advertise group rates and corporate discounts...... and even claim "FUN FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY"
They even offer a partial money back if not satisfied....here is some text from the ad.

"We guarantee that you will experience at least two hijacking attempts by pirates or we will refund half your money back including gun rental charges and any unused ammo ( mini gun charges not included).. How can we guarantee you will experience a hijacking? We operate at 5 knots within 12 miles of the coast of Somalia. If an attempted Hijacking does not occur we will turn the boat around and cruise by at 4 knots. We will repeat this for up to 8 days making three passes a day along the entire length of Somalia. At night the boat is fully lit and bottle rockets are shot off at intervals and loud disco music beamed shore side to attract attention. Cabin space is limited so respond quickly. Reserve your package before Feb 29 and get 100 rounds of free tracer ammo in the caliber of your choice."

As if all that isn’t enough to whet your appetite, there were a few testimonials

I got three confirmed kills on my last trip. I'LL never hunt big game in Africa again. I felt like the Komandant in Schindlers list! ---- Lars, Hamburg Germany

"Six attacks in 4 days was more than I expected. I bagged three pirates and my 12yr old son sank two rowboats with the minigun. PIRATES 0 -PASSENGERS-32! Well worth the trip. Just make sure your spotter speaks English"
Ned, Salt Lake city, Utah USA

"I have not had this much fun since flying choppers in NAM. Do not worry about getting shot by pirates as they never even got close to the ship with those weapons they use and their chitty aim--reminds me of a drunken 'juicer' door gunner we picked up from the motor pool back in Nam" --"chopper' Dan ----Toledo USA.

"Like ducks in a barrel. They turned the ship around and we saw them bleed and cry in the water like little girls. Saw one wounded pirate eaten by sharks--what a laugh riot!! This is a must do.---Zeke-Minnahaw Springs Kentucky USA

Finally, someone had the common sense to cash in AND solve a major problem. These folks deserve a medal!

I have a need to remotely turn a piece of equipment on and off from about 150 feet. I figure " I'll just get some X10 gear and play with that".  This is for the house, not the office.

So.....

http://www.x10.com I go to look at products.

The first thing I see on their HOME page is this:

And 11 more images just like it.

I'm all for gawking at attractive women, but this is a business web site. Not very impressed with their marketing.

Enter the server's ip address in the box, select proxy trace, and it will give you a rough representation of where you are and where the server is and how you are connected.  Unfortunately, even though this visual tool is neat, it stil lroutes through the tool's host.
