Help!!! 1v1 Problems

when someone sends me their ip.. i go to console.. type..   connect (their ip) and then press enter.. i then type their password.. all it does is says connecting to (their ip).. why arent i connecting? am i doing everything right?

You're doing everything right, unless their server isn't on the default port. They probably don't have the server set up correctly. And please, PLEASE read the countless number of threads on how to set up a server before asking how to do it.

did u type password then (the actual password) instead of just the password.
