Your opinions on these gaming headsets
« on: February 21, 2008, 01:02:31 PM »
Hey all

I'm in the process of buying a headset so that I can use vent/teamspeak.  I found these two on tigerdirect that both seem very good.  The problem is, this is my first headset, so the specs all look the same to me.  Would you guys mind having a look and telling me what one would be best to get?
Thanks.

I'd go with something with a normal design, priced around $15. Theses funky new ones like the ones you linked seem pretty liable to break.

Hmmm...  I never thought of that.  I just liked them because they had good reviews and the other ones I looked at weren't thought to be too comfortable.  What models would you recommend for good quality under $20, then?

Get a good, full pair of headphones if you want something high-quality that will last. If you must get something along the lines of what you linked to, then go for cheap pairs so it doesn't matter much if they break or are crappy.

I've got this (for $30 less), and it works great. The mic quality could be better, but it works for gaming. Headphones are fantastic and sturdy. Sound good, as well. If you want a more permanent solution, go for a similar style of headphone. Yes, they will cost money.

Thanks for the input.  I understand what you're saying.  Well, I went back and (keeping my budget in mind) looked at a few sturdier sets, and I've narrowed it down to these two.  Will either of these work?

Thanks for all the help.  So far the biggest thing keeping me from the clanning community has been my need for a mic.  I'm hoping to resolve that for good now.

As far as I can see, the only real difference is that one has 'better bass'. However, if it's for DP, I'd go for the logitech as it's a recognised brand, a bit cheaper, and has mainly good reviews.

Also, I just realised that I said $15 when I meant £15($30). Not going to get a good headset for £7.50.

I use the same one as viper. It cost about 18 dollars at bestbuy. It works great has adjustable volume and mic. Pretty comfortable to wear since you can adjust where the mic is.

What I use:

Logitech USB mic: http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/webcam_communications/microphones/devices/221&cl=us,en
Grado SR-60 headphones: http://www.gradolabs.com/product_pages/sr60.htm

Well over $20, but still very good quality for the price.

I use that standing mic too =] I probably would have got a good headset, but i spent my money on a good set of surround sound speakers and a sound card.

Thanks for all your responses!  I see that this headset is highly recommended by the majority of you: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/searchtools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2181214&body=REVIEWS
It looks like it would work very well.  But for some reason it's gotten a lot of negative reviews on tigerdirect.  People say it is uncomfortable, it doesn't last long, and the mic isn't great.  Should I assume that none of this has happened with any of you?  I'm just a little wary of buying a set that has as many negative reviews as positive...  just because I'm on a budget.
Thanks for all the help!

Well to be honest I haven't had a single problem with it. I have 3 kids that love to grab, wear, throw, and yank it. I would say that it's highly durable. As far as the mic goes, it seems to work great since no one has ever complained on the receiving end. As for being uncomfortable... I could see how some people would say that after wearing it for hours on end the wrong way. I say buy it. You'll be satisfied.

I tripped over mine (again...) last night and busted the crap out of the speaker pieces, just had to pop them back in.  I've tripped over the cable or thrown it in frustration quite a bit and it still works great.  Been using mine for about 18 months.

The comfort thing might be an issue.  It took me a while to get used to it cause I've never really worn around the neck headphones before.  I think it mostly depends on the size of your ears though, they really want to hang off of them.  I find that I can't game with it on for more than a few hours at a time.
