Do You Like 1-Man Cap Fests?
« on: October 24, 2005, 02:44:36 AM »
What I mean by this, is on the "classic" setting when all but 1 person on each team gets eliminated, and those individuals run flag capture after flag capture scoring a large number of points as opposed to having major point scoring being a team effort.  It's especially frequent on 1-flag maps.  One person grabs, caps, and the other person is waiting at the flag to grab it as soon as it comes back, then caps, at which point the first person is back at the flag again, grabs, caps, et cetera.  Meanwhile, the rest of the team is just stuck waiting.

I despise cap-fests.
I am also not very fond of maps, like jump, where a team can be eliminated on one route allowing a flag grab with almost no way to intercept.
IMHO maps should offer some opportunity to intercept flag runs. Midnight, NiteFactor, & Brainstorm, as well as a good number of other maps provide this feature. There are multiple routes, and at almost any place in these maps, if there is an opponent flag grab, you can intercept.

on the one hand, on a public server, this can be quite annoying.  But you shouldnt take these votes now as a reason to remove some kind of option or do another big change to the game, because you need to differentiate between public and match gaming once again. Hell yeah, it can be annoying on a pub, but taking that option away completely would destroy another point of matching:  it sure does require some sort of knowledge and sense of the game to not let the enemy have such flag runs.

You have already implemented the options of flagcapendsround and flagmustbeatbase to work against that, and that is probably a good option for public servers, although i dont think all servers should have that option enabled (some people like it this way, some the other way...).  Seeing this poll now I'm really interested in what will happen to dp2 in the near future...

It's even worse in matches.  In public play, it doesn't matter so much if you win or lose -- it's just for fun.  In matches, though, it matters a little more.  It may not happen as often, but when it does, it's just frustrating.  If I'm eliminated, I'm stuck waiting and hoping for the best.  If I'm the one guy alive, the outcome of the match rests solely on my shoulders.

I didn't make this poll because I plan to make changes.  As you've pointed out, I've already implemented options to solve this problem.  What I'm interested in is going back to the fundamental problems of the original gameplay and seeing where people stand.

Those that voted "yes", I'm curious to hear your side.

I think it depends on the map; in some case (arenaball, blitz) the small one flag maps don't typically turn into cap-fests with good teams playing, simply because good players are able to use grenades/good shooting to hit the guy before he's able to counter the other players cap. Certainly though, it does put a lot of added pressure on that one player who can alter the turnout of a match based on a few seconds of choices. Some people like that, other don't -- I can understand both sides.

Now, the large maps where it's impossible to stop someone from a 1 on 1 capfest.. that's definately silly.

I don't really like em.. a nice idea would be to have a limit.. if theres 2 people left and 3 flag captures say, that round ends.

I agree, depends on the map.  You need intercept points thus my point about using more teleports when playing on large maps.
