Lag on EV1 Servers?
« on: July 09, 2008, 11:55:09 AM »
I make this post because it seems recently there have been many more complaints of lag issues on Loials EV1 server. Normally I don't pay to much attention when people call out LAG because of the wide variety of possible reasons other than a server issue.

Whats caught my attention recently has been;

1. High coincidence of lag. Multiple people are lagging at the same time.

2. Higher rate of lag complaints.

While I haven't experienced any lag on the server other than what my own computer produces, the issue seems valid enough for an investigation.

Is this a real issue?

-Does Jitspoe or any other person know of a reason that the server(s) might have problems?

-Are there similar experiences on the other EV1 servers?

Can it be measured?

-Is there a way, possibly through rcon, to setup a continuous netgraph or text equivalent which can be retrieved as a record?

-Are there adequate tests that can be performed to stress the server and induce lag? (I really no squat about network admin, so fill in whatever terms I should be using here)

Please don't respond saying "I lagged on Loials server". Like I said earlier, there are too many reasons for lagging to automatically blame the server. If your gonna post experiences, make sure its relevant. Things like "_# of us all lagged out at the same time on __(date)".

There are a number of things that could cause this:

1) The server's CPU could be overloaded.
2) Depending on the time of day, I might be running a backup.  I imagine this can cause some adverse effects.
3) May be a bandwidth spike - people accessing the forums, login system, downloading maps, playing, etc. all at the same time could hit the 10 Mbps cap.
4) The backbone/connection to some areas may be slow.  I've seen this happen a lot - certain people will get lag and others will not, all depending on where they're located and what ISP they're using.

I didnt realize you were hosting everthing of the same address/server. That seems like a probable cause. Also solution #4, although I dont understand it really, describes the symptoms of a chunk of people experiancing issues while others are fine.

Consider it solved. I'll let you know if I can come up with more specifac instances of group lag that maybe you can match up with one of your solutions.

I figured out what was most likely the problem.  One of the servers had an error and was stuck in a busy-wait eating up over 90% of the CPU.  I fixed it.  Let me know if there are still any lag issues.
