They need the military as much as the French do.

Oh wait, same thing...

You laugh but what you Americans fail to realize is that Canada is slowly building a secret military in the north waiting for the day when America is desperate and tries to assimilate us. We will be ready and unleash a fury of the most technologically advanced artillery the world has not yet seen. We are the utopia of the future. We shall rule the world; a new Rome for the 21st century. Do not underestimate the power of the Canadian loony (money, not people).
We keep our plans secret to lull the rest of the world into a false sense of security, but when excrement goes down, you shall feel our wrath!

Too bad we can't sign California over to the Canadians. I guess even Canada has standards.

Smokey!!!! I haven't read all the way through this topic but if you still need advice shoot me a pm. I'm ex-military so is my wife. We both come from military families and I would be more than happy to assist you in finding the right branch and job field. Maybe even some advice on how to deal with your recruiters.

It all depends on YOU

The Marines are a close nit group ..The Few The Proud The Marines...My brother was in
the corp and he now works on an Army base as one of their IT guys (BOFH).

Navy ...well you get to wear white ...lol,  My uncle retired from the navy with 26 yrs and he was away from his family at least (best guess) 15 of those years , being out on a ship for months wouldn't be for me, however  there are two things, Seals and Naval Aviators.

I was in the ARMY and I liked it. I was in during the first gulf war. The ARMY offers a wide variety
of choices  Army  Aviator,  Helicopter pilot, Special Forces , Green Bret , Ranger , 82 and 101 Airborne , etc.

The Air Force is less combat oriented as far as seeing front line combat. My nephew didn't know what he was going to do after high school and I told him to join the military and he decided to join the Air Force he has been in now going on 5 yrs and says he loves it and is thinking about retiring from the Air Force .

Any branch you decide will get you to where you want I believe , They all have GI bills for college and such. My sister in law is in the ARMY and is going to college right now on a special program while shes still in. Also I know that the ARMY is offering 20 k plus sign on bonuses so I'd check with which ever branch you are look at and ask about an enlistment bonus.

You are the fellow that has to decide
Whether you'll do it or toss it aside.
You are the fellow who makes up your mind
Whether you'll lead or will linger behind
Whether you'll try for the goal that's afar
Or just be contented to stay where you are.
Take it or leave it. Here's something to do!
Just think it over --- It's all up to you!

Words can not express my laughter.

@Snipen:  I have a buddy in the Navy, and wanted to be a seal.  Made it though navy boot camp and qualified for both seal and 'squid' training.  He went with the 'squids'.

In all honesty, if you do not plan on staying in for 20 years and collecting a retirement I would opt out of anything closely related to grunt work. Depending on how you score on your asvab.. there are many options open to you. Here is how I describe the different branches of the military.

Marine corps - Think of these guys as the poor kids in the ghetto. Born and raised there. Never had crap, never will. Content with just running the streets having a good time. Friendship and brotherhood speak volumes. Just like the streets... they'll always have your back.

Army - These are your hard working, everyday middle class. These guys work their butts off at a mostly 9 to 5 day job with some shift work here and there. They come home after work everyday complaining how hard life is for them but constantly praying that they can make ends meet after over indulging in alcohol every weekend. The people stick close together during the hard times and try to fake their way through every promotion board. (I heard there is no such thing now)

Air force - Simply put... I spent many days wishing that I had went air force after seeing them get apartments built   across from the tent I was living in. If an Air force airmen got assigned to an army or marine unit to work with us for any reason they would get paid extra money each month for living below their standards. Enough said.
