Some people buy dedicated hosting. They specifically pay for a server to be up all the time. I host my VCW servers at my workplace. To do that I bought a server and have it running 24/7.

Buy a VPS. It's cheaper than buying a proper Dedicated Server, and you have all root access, just like dedicated.
The only possible way for you to keep a server running 24/7, is if you keep your computer running 24/7. Which can be a pain.
For the VeeB Servers I pay £5 a month, which isn't bad. ;]

if your running this off your computer just keep the black window open.

Or Yum install screen for Centos and various others.
