Ground: Map Help.
« on: March 27, 2006, 06:01:16 PM »
Hey guys. I'm throwing this question out to anybody who can answer: How do i make a bumpy ground as in what you would see in one of Dirty Taco's maps? Thanks.

Edit: Throw tips and tricks in, too ;)

DT usually just takes a bunch of wedge-shaped brushes and puts them together using a lot of vertex manipulation.  I typically keep things simple -- have a large brush and use a couple clipping planes to slice some angles in it.  There are also terrain generation programs that you can use, such as gensurf, but you have to be careful with these as they can knock your r_speeds up really high really quick (not that DT's r_speeds are low ;)).

Jitspoe: I tried just making a few bruses and putting them together. That didn't work out too well. I'm gonna go ahead and try just to clip them. Thanks. Any other tips?

Edit: When you say "clip" You are talking about the Split tool, right?

Shift+rightclick to place points on a plane, and then there's a button to press, I think the tooltip says "carve."  The split one keeps both sides  You may need to use both, depending on how complex what you're trying to construct is.

Yeah, the castle hurts the r_speeds more than the terrain, I think.

Allright, thanks. For now, I'm just going to use make a basic ramp, and carve it. That seems to work pretty well
