Calling all Aussies & Brits (ViCiOuZ)
« on: January 07, 2011, 04:36:42 PM »
Need help from you guys to find out if our site is use-able in Australia/The UK.

We currently have the database/web servers in the U.S., so we need to find out if the latency issue makes the site unusable or if it is OK. (And thereby if we need to make the investment in European servers)

We also have an iPhone app and if any of you have iPhones, it'd be great if you could test that for us as well.

To download the iPhone app, search 'barbird' on the app store (it's free).

Keep in mind that the content will be largely useless for a few days as we collect more tweets

Another quick question for you: do bars use phrases like 'happy hour' or 'ladies nights' or 'no cover' in the UK/Australia? How do would they describe these things over there?

Thanks in advance

The only lag I seem to be getting is just google maps rendering slowly. Delays while loading tweets seem perfectly fine, so I guess your servers are alright. You could try and access the site through a proxy somewhere, that should add enough latency to see what the threshold for acceptable use is. Seems fine connecting direct from here though (southern england).

Definitely happy hours and ladies' nights, haven't heard "no cover" but looking it up I'm sure some places use it. More likely just "free entry".

From Melbourne - Apart from Google Maps as Steve said, the rest of it loads fine.  The app is great, again, its just Google Maps that takes its time loading.  That's with a 4th Gen touch in case you wanted to know.

Thanks a lot guys... that's been the overall consensus from everyone I've talked to. It's actually very good to hear as it saves us about $260/mo.
