Fog question
« on: August 24, 2006, 12:09:45 PM »
Hello again all,

The map I'm making...seems to have run into a problem. There are a few areas where you can see a lot of the map, however it's a little hard on the r_speeds. It isn't vised yet, and that will help a lot but I'm thinking that it still would be a strain.

Does fog actually limit viewing range? Or is it just rendered on top.

Because I fear that a Gensurf mountain which would obstruct the view is a bad idea. And I haven't any idea on how to make one myself. At least that looks nice :P

Thanks.

Gensurf is a bad idea period. Use clipping planes to get good-looking terrain. Also, phong shading. What kind of r_speeds are you talking about?

I don't quite get how to make terrain with clipping planes. Otherwise it would be my first choice.

You're using BSP, right? Select a brush (or a few) and shift-right click in two places to make a 2d plane. To make it 3d, shift-right click again and switch views and reposition the points.

...yep.

Fog itself won't limit the distance things are drawn at.  There is a special version of the vis utility that will do this, though.  If you combined it with fog, you could accomplish what you're trying to do, I think.  Also, scaling up the texture sizes can reduce r_speeds (though not so much with terrain where it's already broken into little brushes).

You suggested that VIS-er to me once, jits, but I  couldn't ever find it. I don't think it exists anymore. :P

Ok thanks jitspoe, but I think I've got what I'll use. Giant boulders, hehe.

I could do with a multi-point clipper I must say.
